Good for camping
I used this a tent light. It lights up the space very well. I like the glow-in-the-dark feature it has because it is much easier to find it that way although by early morning the glow has dimmed down considerably. I also used it outside for the camp itself, but I preferred to use my headlamp. I think it is too heavy for backpacking, but for camping, it is great! Small and compact I like it better than the much larger lanterns. For travel/emergency/survival use it is light enough to pack anywhere and will give you necessary light for your nighttime needs.
Best little light I've used
After trying many electric lanterns over the years with disappointing results, I finally found a great light. I bought this lantern for a late October, week long float trip. I used it in my tent and as a camp light. When the sun is gone by 6:00 p.m., there is much to do after dark. All of us had headlamps, but it was a lot easier to cook and prepare gear for the next day with a well lit work area. This lantern gave out way more light than a propane lantern that was also in camp. Add the weight and bulk of propane to the comparison and the Pico greatly out performed the other lantern. I know the other folks on the river with me were going home to buy a Pico for themselves. The high output was great for camp and the low was just right in the tent. The instructions included with this lantern said high output was good for 19 hours on a set of batteries. An additional handful of AA batteries gives me all the light I need on extended trips for less than one pound and a minimal amount of space in my pack. The hook on the bottom is a little troublesome to use, and it turned on in my dry bag once. Probably more of a learning curve for me than a defect of the product.
Light weight and great for camping
Bought this because I didn't want to lug around a propane latern on my most recent beach camping trip. It worked great. Batteries lasted my whole trip, both settings provided great light. My only complaints are that the hook on the bottom, IMO, would be better as a larger hoop instead for attaching with a carabiner, and the folding leg (the black wire) is loose and flops around. I would prefer it to be a bit stiffer, and to snap into place. But this was a pretty good light for my needs, I'll keep it around for the next trip.
Bright tent with the Pico
I didn't try or know anyone with the Black Diamond lantern that the REI expert recommended. I reviewed the Pico and compared lumens, battery life, and product feel and bought the Pico. It works good for me, but it would be great to see reviews of the two brands heads up by someone.
