I ordered exactly the size I always get and it was a little baggy around the waist. I could probably get a size smaller but then I'd worry it would be too tight around the legs. The pants aren't exactly attractive, but they are comfortable and definitely something I would wear camping. Buying pants online is always a crapshoot but since REI doesn't carry plus sizes in store, there isn't much us bigger gals can do. I would recommend these pants and do not think they run small as other reviewers have suggested.

Finally found them

I've looked for durable, water-resistant hiking pants for *plus-sized* women for two years and I finally found them. I wear these pants as a National Park volunteer, for day hiking, and for casual wear around town. I love that they are lightweight and keep me dry, even in strong winds and moderately heavy rain. I'm a 2x and with the touch of elastic at the waist, these fit me great. I'm a little short so I had to hem the pants, but that wasn't a problem since there were no zippers or other details to get in the way. These pants would be even better if the zip-off legs converted to a just-below-the-knee length capri pant instead of shorts. The shorts are just too short when I am sitting down. There aren't enough pockets. I would add side/thigh cargo pockets and rear pockets for improved storage. I also wish there were a little spandex in the fabric to enhance movement and comfort, especially when sitting down or hiking up steep slopes.

Yep. They Run Small

I really like the style and the weight of these trousers/shorts. The fabric is perfect, and I like the variety of pockets. The proportions are good for me, but they definitely run small. Not so much a problem while hiking or standing, but the seat is the part that runs small, so when you sit the problem becomes apparent. Just go up one size and you will be fine. BTW, I got these in "Bark," which as it turns out is a brown color with a hint of green. Hard to tell from the photos. It is pleasant enough, not dark enough to be hot, not light enough to get dirty easily. Related to the sizing, but also a quality issue, is that after wearing these as shorts while working in the yard, the center seam low in the seat began to pull apart. It is a double seam, still, I had to repair it. A pair of sports shorts like this should stand up to months of punishment rather than come apart at the seam, even if they are a bit tight. That is pretty much the point of hiking shorts, right? To be durable? Still, I like them well enough to fire up the sewing machine and reinforce the butt.

Comfy Pants

Great pants, but I bought a size larger based on an earlier review. Maybe my waist isn't as big as I thought, but if I was you, I'd order by normal size, not by what the other reviewer thought. Returning them for a smaller size, but otherwise, very comfortable, lightweight, and the length is good too, for my 32" inseam.

Size way off--will try yet another size up

I am usually an 18 (including in other hiking pants), which is often a 1x or, the 1x is one size up. But, as I frequently seem to be an in-between size (19?) I ordered these in a 2x (which to me is a 20). Oh my. they are way too small. I have returned them and will await the 3x, which I NEVER buy in any other pants as they would fall off. But, given the cut of the 2x I have a sneaking suspicion the 3x still won't fit. I've been looking for a good hiking pant with some elastic on the side (for those in-between moments) as my other hikers in the 18s are a good fit but could use some "give" for scrambling, bending, getting on and off horses, etc. I was hoping these would be it. Fingers crossed the 3x will fit. Why can't women's pants be sized on the same measurements, across manufacturers? And, if they want to encourage us to buy the product, the sizes should be named smaller numbers, not larger ones! Ha ha.

Ran TOO big

As much as I wish I was a smaller size, these pants ran so large that, sadly, I had to return them. They seemed to be well-made and I was looking forward to trying the convertible-to-shorts feature. Order a size smaller!

Great Find!

I needed some zip-off hiking pants and didn't expect to EVER find any plus/short sizes on the rack. Finding sportswear in plus sizes is no easy task. These were on sale, so I paid a great price. The bottoms zip off and on very easily. I used them for a recent excursion to Santa Cruz Island, one of the Channel Islands, where I hiked. Love them! What a find!

Fit terrible in all sizes

Based on other reviews about size, I ordered both the 1X and 2X. The 1X is very tight through the tummy, and my tummy is not that huge!! Most of us would not be ordering a plus size if we were skinny! The 2X fits through the tummy but is about 6 inches too big in the waist. Also the legs are so wide I would be flapping in the breeze. You'd have to have an oddly shaped body for these to fit.

1-Star for Fit; 4-Star for What These Could Be

I am rating these one-star, not because the fabric or product is bad, but I am so tired of buying plus sized items that don't fit as they should. It is so difficult to find plus sized women's hiking gear and I dislike the fit of Columbia pants/shorts (which seems to be the only option), so I was beyond excited to see these zip off pants at REI on sale. I am SO disappointed! As others have stated, these are so small. I went up a size, hoping that they'd fit, and they just don't. I can see that they would be great pants if the fit was large enough, but the first time I was to lift my leg, I know these would tear - additionally, they're unbearably tight in the largest size. If you're a women's size 16 the 3x may fit... possibly even an 18W could fit into the 3X, dependent on proportions, but if you have any meat on your lower half and are larger than that size, I'd say you should probably avoid these unless you don't mind returning them. I am a 20W (18W in the waist, but I usually need extra room for my meaty legs and hips), and the 3X only barely zipped up - and it definitely wasn't comfortable. The fabric is nice and the zipper for the shorts seems well placed. Lots of pockets to hold items as well... it's just a shame they seem to run small. If you carry your weight up top, these may work for you. While the styling looked nice on my pear shape, they just don't fit. PLEASE, REI... PLEASE [I can't make the letters large enough to express my vehemence in this regard] talk to some of these companies and get them to make plus sized ladies hiking gear. There really are those of us who move quite a bit and need appropriate gear that fits us properly.
