Great Holding Power in Sand
These worked great in the sand. I camped at Assateague Island and used these to anchor a 12 x 12 tarp in the sand. My last trip my Y stakes would not hold the tarp poles unless I used 2 lines at a 45 degree angle to support each pole. This time I only needed 1 stake to support each pole and they held my tarp in place despite the usual windy conditions at Assateague. Sand anchors work just as well but if you want to move your tarp around it would be take a lot more work to dig them out and bury them again. With these you can move your tarp or whatever you are anchoring with ease.
Great stakes in loose footing
Just like another reviewer, I used these while camping on the beach at Assateague Island. At first I was skeptical about the helix design, thinking it was just a gimmick but they worked great! The moment of truth was when we were packing up the site and I had to really heave when pulling them out of the sand because they were holding so well. Mind you they had been in for over a week through many rain storms. But they kept our tent planted through those strong costal thunder storms and wind. I've also used these in the more packed sand of the NJ Pine Barrens and they worked great yet again.
9" Twist great for sand and loose dirt
We just took these 9" twist stakes on a 10-day desert canoe trip and they were a great fit for sand and dirt on the river bank. Shorter 6" stakes would not hold in the relatively loose soil but these did. Ordering more.
amazing
They're light, they're sturdy, they're massive. I carry two on every trip in case of emergency, and I've never regretted the extra weight. I suspect that folks who are using these on the beach and struggling aren't using them properly, or are using them to stake down pop-up shelters in high wind (practically impossible.) I used to do a lot of beach camping on Assateague, and my Hubba Hubba withstood tropical storm-force wins with the help of these stakes (and, y'know, knowing how to properly guy out a tent. Please, everyone, learn how to use your guy lines properly.)
Crazy strong, best tent peg I've every used.
As a long time camper in Southern Arizona, I have tried just about every tent peg on the market. The MSR stakes are the best by far. Their twisted aluminum shape is perfect for hard packed dirt, loose gravel and all but the finest sand. The reflective specs in the lines are very helpful too. If I was nitpicking, I would ask for a bit more of a flange at the end to catch the tent/ground cloth loops. The biggest drawback to these pegs is trying to get them out when you're headed home.
When something is perfect...
Having tent camped in Arizona for over 20 years, I have tried every kind of tent peg and this one is the clear winner. I have found this tent peg to be effective in sand as well as hard packed dirt.
Worth it
Worked as advertised. Held our tent in gusty high winds while friends without them found their tents collapsed. Worked really well in sand
Awesome Stakes
Great tent stakes. Go through extremely compact dirt without bending and they stay in even under extreme winds.
Best tent stake!
I used these the weekend I got them. Went in easy, didn't pull-out during high winds (40-45MPH). Pulled out easy with the pull-cord.
Easy to use
Solid stakes. Great upgrade from the default ones included with a tent. So far they've withstood wind, held fast in sand, and the bright color makes them easier to find in the snow. Haven't had any issues with bending, and they're lighter than I expected which is nice for backpacking.
