Disappointed
Just returned my second Core to my local REI store due to software failure. Bought the first and the display froze in first week. REI immediately replaced it with a new one with no hassle. The second Core went almost to the 2 year warranty coverage and the software again malfunctioned (the time display would suddenly revert to 12:00, necessitating resetting several times daily). I removed and replaced the battery, hoping the software might "reboot" but to no avail. The local REI store offered to replace it with yet another new one, but I took the refund as I have little faith in the product reliability. However, I give REI high marks for customer satisfaction!
Watch dial: Beware if you cannot see in the dark
While I appreciate the design and look, I had to return the watch as the menu and buttons are confusing and not intuitive. I spent the best part of 3 hours setting it up and trying to understand how to navigate. However, the biggest issue is screen visibility. Not clear why I need a flashlight to see the dial, as it was extremely dim and working the options to increase contrast made it look like the first edition of Timex digital watches! Maybe if I was in a covert mission to land on a beachhead at night, it would work better. Just need to the dial in the daylight. I picked a Garmin watch instead and had it running in 15 minutes, with gps!
Great performance for the price.
1)How you use the product Paragliding(log entries only/excellent for this purpose) Snowboarding Mountain Biking Hour Lunch count down timer Shallow Dives (Free and SCUBA) Hiking (EXCELLENT for this purpose) Dual Time (Family on the East Coast/I live in AK) 2)Things that are great about it SEE ABOVE. 3)Things that aren't so great about it I have owned a few triple sensor watches (Casio, High Gear, Suunto). The Suunto Core All Black Military is Superior. The one possible improvement would be to have 1' altimeter increments like the High Gear triple sensor watches I have owned. But this watch is superior for ease of use and perfect functionality for my activities.
Easy to use and best looking ABC watch
I spent a ton of time looking at alternatives before I made the decision to buy. I was looking for a watch that I could wear daily with an altimeter / barometer and compass. This product is my primary watch. I wear it daily and find it very comfortable. It feels nice on my big hairy wrist. Usually watches catch my arm hair in the band, but the CORE has yet to pull any hairs out. I got the standard screen and it is very readable in all lighting conditions. The backlight is bright and readable. I recommend going with this over the all black model for readability. (unless you really are a black ops military dude - but if you are why don't you just ask skynet for the time) The style of this watch was the primary factor in my purchase. I am surprised at how many compliments I get on the watch. Especially since I work with people who own very expensive dress watches. The features all work perfectly. The compass is quick and usable, the altimeter is accurate once you calibrate it, and the barometer is accurate with calibration as well. The calibration is a little complicated, but that is the nature of all accurate instruments. The storm alarm works well. I keep it turned off when I am not on a hiking trip because it goes off inside buildings sometimes. An important note about all air pressure measuring devices: they do not work well in air conditioned buildings. If you work in an office or some large air conditioned building, the air pressure will probably skyrocket when you enter the building. I don't fault the watch for this because even the most sensitive professional barometers suffer from the same thing. I only have one complaint. In compass mode when you turn the backlight on it blinks/flashes. I don't know why and I found no mention of it online. It is a minor thing, but annoying nonetheless.
8 out of 10 ain't bad
Very comfortable to wear. The barometer is very accurate, the altimeter is within +or-75 feet. I have not used the depth meter function, but have showered with it, got it good and wet without problems. The alarm is not loud enough for me. The provided manual is a joke, not nearly enough info in order to use all the watch functions. You have to download the detailed manual on the internet. I had to bring the original watch back to REI after it started having display malfunctions. I was in and out with a new watch in 10 minutes, REI staff in Lynnwood were great,no hassles, very easy to work with. The new watch has worked perfectly.
Amazing watch
I got the black with yellow accents and it looks amazing! The watch itself is super easy to use and has a very intuitive interface. The documentation online is exceptional as well. The one issue that others have noticed as well is the back light and contrast in general. It isn't the brightest or easiest to see in certain light conditions but it is a minor inconvenience for all of the features you get in such a good looking watch. I'm guessing the dimness is what allows this thing to get up to 18 months on a single battery. Oh, and the battery is user replaceable! That is a huge plus.
Good quality and very accurate
This is a great watch. I got the Suunto core instead of the alpha because it has a brighter screen. The compass is very accurate just be sure to keep it level when activating compass. When setting my compass I set it on something like a cup and rotating it counter clockwise slowly and fluent to get best result.
Great alti/baro, compass struggles
Watch is great, stylish and comfortable. Though I bought for the outdoors, I find myself often wearing on a day-to-day basis . The altimeter is reliable (when calibrated) barometer functions well, and little add-ins like sunrise/sunset time a nice bonus. I'm not particularly kind to gear, and have been wearing this frequently- it still looks like it's fresh out of the box. My big gripe is the compass, which I've tried calibrating under a number of different scenarios and has never once read reliably or even remotely close to the appropriate direction. As an ABC watch: A+ grade for A&B functions, but a solid F for C.
Faulty buttons
The features and style of the Core were perfect for me. Unfortunately, this watch has fatal quality issues. The start/stop button failed on two different Cores that I used. I owned both watches for one week each before the start/stop button suddenly stopped responding. They were used very lightly--worn around home and office. I hadn't even taken them on any outdoor adventures. Reviews regarding button failures are surprisingly and disappointingly true. It's a shame. The Core is too nice a watch to be undermined by poor reliability.
LOVE this watch!
I bought this watch for the many great features, but it is also surprisingly comfortable and stylish! I love the storm alarm feature! I always know when it's about to rain (and so do my friends). The altimeter, barometer, and compass are very accurate after the initial calibration. The thermometer will always read better after taking it off for about 10-15 mins, because your body temp offsets the reading. I love the black on black style! I wear it all the time and I have received a lot of comments on it. It's a little pricey for what I would normally spend on a watch, but totally worth it! All around great watch!
