Sizing Notes

Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements. Some women's pants are available in petite and tall sizes. Typically petite sizes fit women 4'11" to 5'3". Regular sizes fit women 5'4" to 5'8". Tall sizes fit women 5'9" to 5'11".

PETITE: Generally, as compared to regular sizes, petite sizes are 2.5 inches shorter in inseam, 1 inch shorter in body length, 1.25 inches shorter in sleeve length and ¾ inch shorter in total rise.

TALL: tall sizes are 3 inches longer in inseam, 2 inches longer in body length, 2.5 inches longer in sleeve length and 1.25 inches longer in total rise.

Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.

Inseam is measured to the floor.

Determined to travel to France and Italy this summer ultra, ultra light, with both hands free, I brought a light and dark pair of these shorts along with just a few, very light weight blouses, clean socks, sandals and tennies. Quick drying was critical this year, as it rained several times at the Tour de France (see photo) These shorts always looked great, washed and dry overnight. The seat -zippered pocket stowed my baggie-wrapped passport; each front pocket held paper money, coins, a small notebook and lip gloss...and anything else I may need. For extra security, I safety-pinned shut the side pocket zippers while on busses and trains. These shorts are terrific and I never felt out of place even going out to dinner in family-style places in France. Just a pair of sandals rather than tennis shoes did the trick. Highly recommend...The seat size is not too big, by the way.

Not as durable as older models

When reading these reviews, be sure to look Be sure to read the date for when the reviews were posted as the shorts have changed slightly over the years. I bought my most recent pair of Sahara shorts (12, asphalt) back in May of 2016 and they only lasted 3 wears. The seams tore at the base of the zipper right above my pubic bone. I have 2 pairs from 2007 and one finally ripped to the point of no repair. I wear them for work - walking dogs - as I love how they stand up to the weather (rain or scorching heat), have multiple pockets for poop bags, treats, and my cell phone, with room to spare. Which is why I bought these as a replacement in May - I like the number of pockets and the material. However, these are missing the outside belt to hold them up which came standard on my old pair. Even with just my cell phone in my pocket, I had to adjust the internal elastic button doohicky to the point that about 7" was hanging out from each end, yet they were still falling down. I could never get them snug enough, have never had that problem with my original pair, and had to walk around contantly hiking them up. Fit wise, they were fine in the waist with nothing in my pockets. If I went smaller they wouldn't fit over my thighs, which aren't terribly huge to begin with. I like room to walk and don't like a tight fit. I need room to maneuver. The inseam seemed fine, but the high rise (zipper) from crotch to snap closer seemed a bit much. I can understand that when hiking and not wanting the pack to rub on your lower back, but it made them feel super big and more to try to hold up. And I think dealing with that caused the tear as I was constantly bending over and squatting to pick up poop and had to deal with the ever sliding shorts. It became a pain to worry about what I was wearing more than the dogs in my care. I love the material and number of pockets. But I want something with a slightly lower rise, and little roomier in the thighs, and an external belt. I feel like these are a step down from previous versions of the Sahara shorts.

wore them every day for two months

These were my only shorts for a hike on the Camino across northern Spain (almost 600 miles). I ended up wearing them every day (washing them every couple of days by hand). The pockets were perfect; I kept my cell phone on one side and my bag with passport, money, etc) in the other. I've been home for a couple of months and bought another pair, which I still wear almost every day! Great length, comfortable, dry fast. My only complaint would be that the fabric can snag if you sit on a log or rough rock. However the trade-off of them being so lightweight makes them still close to perfect shorts.

Lots of pockets to store gear!

Got these shorts for a backpacking trip on the AT. Favorite shorts in my pack! Lightweight, dried quickly after hiking in the rain, stored LOTS of gear in the pockets. Waist is adjustable which is nice, but they seem to run a little large, so I would order down a size next time. LOVE them and they look good too!

Fantastic hiking shorts!

I got these before our trip to Moab in May. They worked perfectly day after day, never seemed dirty even with rock scrambling and sandy conditions. I got them in the coal color, which is really dark gray, yet they always looked fresh. I plan to get them in khaki and green both. The adjustable waist is a nice feature. I bought size 12, as the 10 seemed a bit tight in the waist for me. By using the adjustment, I got a perfect fit and the roomy legs work great for hiking and rock scrambling when you need that extra fabric. I am short (5'3") so they hang down to my knees, but I prefer that for hiking in areas with shrubs that may scratch. I have used them now several times and they still look like new.

Love these shorts!

Love these shorts for summer hiking in Arizona--great design, comfortable fit, lightweight fabric, adjustable waist, quick drying, and large side pockets for quick/easy access. Like the longer length, too. May just have to get another pair in another color!

Love these shorts

I love these pants. Bought a pair in each color. I did have to size up one size though. I am 5'-6" 135 lb and settled with a size 10 even though my normal size is an 8. They seem to run a bit tight across the butt. They are great for all kinds of outdoor activity. Love the cargo pockets which seem to be hard to find in women's shorts. And the rise is not way low as is the current fashion. They are just right. Wish there were more colors like navy and stone but at least I got three colors to go with. Hope I don't wear them out as I think they will be my new summer favorite.

Best Hiking Shorts ever!

I just received these shorts today. Ordered them in two colors. They are awesome. Previous reviews indicated they either ran slightly large or small or a tad tight in the seat so I went with the reviewer who said to go by your size chart. I came in between a 4 and a 6 so ordered the 6 and it was the right choice. The waist is a bit large but with the adjustable waistband it is fine and the seat is just right. Why don't more items come with an adjustable waistband! That has always been my problem. This solution is so simple. I have always had to buy clothes to fit my seat and the waist is always to big. And I am not a large person - 5/4" and 115 lbs. Thank you so much REI for these shorts. I am an avid hiker and will be using them this summer in the Rockies.

Love the pockets!

I bought these shorts after trying on dozens. The size 10 fit perfectly (5'6, 143#). I am a senior citizen, so everything has dropped a bit on the back side, which was sort of wide to begin with. In any case, I bought the khaki first and am now ordering the shale. These are very lightweight and quick drying, but my favorite part is the large, very useful pockets. My only concern with the pockets is that the lining of the side pockets is mesh, which has a tendency to tear easily, and is then very difficult to repair. The large, lower-leg pockets are roomy enough for my very large smartphone, and lined with the same fabric as the shorts. These shorts do wrinkle quite a bit. I doubt they would be suitable for anything other than casual wear because of the fabric. They are very comfortable for hiking and walking.

Comfortable and functional

These are nice-looking shorts that are great for warmer weather hiking. The fabric keeps the sweat off of me and is comfortable for activities involving complex movement like hiking up rocky hills. The length is perfect. I’m 5’5”, and these hit me just above the knees. That’s nice for an older person whose thighs aren’t her best feature. These shorts feature great pockets! I can easily carry my phone or a map or other flat accessories. I bought a size up from what I normally wear. I tried my regular size, and it was okay, but the larger size felt a little better. I suspect that, if you’re on the cusp between sizes, it’s wise to buy the larger.

My Go To shorts

I have worn Sahara convertible pants for several years but this past year decided that I never removed the legs to convert to shorts so I should just buy some shorts. I like these shorts so much better then my old Sahara convertible pants for many reasons. I like the pockets. Yes, women do use large pockets. There are so many clothing brands that don't put large pockets in women's pants and shorts. Additionally the cargo pockets are great, with several different options including zippers. I keep my passport and extra money in the lower zip pocket so I don't ever worry about loss. The adjustable waist is great! I walked a 2 week trek and lost about 5 pounds. I wore these shorts almost exclusively once I realized how much I liked them and that adjustable waist was so practical. Keeping my shorts on my hips so I did not experience chafing. I'm a middle-aged chubby woman so I appreciate the longer length of these shorts. The material is light and breathable. These shorts wash easily in a sink and drying is quick. They look nice, even after wearing them 3 days straight. I think the only thing left to say is that I just bought another pair!
