I used this pack for a day hike in the Rockies, and am using it currently to prepare for a hike up a 14er. I love the comfort and the size of the pack, it definitely fits everything I need. As the headline suggests, I find it a bit fussy. There are almost too many compartments and straps. I keep losing things in the bag because there are so many zippers and loops... I think a few less compartments and straps and I've love this bag. I actually ended up cutting out the hip pockets because they were in the way of my arms swinging when walking... I like it much better now that I've trimmed it down. It's nice looking and the color is good, and my back stayed cool.
I am 5'4" and had a tough time finding a day pack that was comfortable, lightweight, and that could fit a good amount of gear. This bag was perfect! It is extremely comfortable on the shoulders and around the back. Gregory did a really great job designing this day pack for a women's frame. The material is also great quality. I had originally purchased a Camelbak, but returned it (bad fit for my petite size). I purchased the black ink color, which is nicer than it appears in the photo. I've used this to carry my laptop and light clothing as a city commuter. I also plan to take it on the 4-day Inca trail hike (we will have porters to carry other items).
I used this day pack to hike Half Dome in Yosemite, CA. It was perfect for the 14-16 mile day hike. I loved how all of the pockets came in handy and kept me organized. In the easily accessible hip belt pockets,I was able to store my point and shoot camera, snacks, lip balm, head lamp, whistle, and small compass. The front compartment held my sun hat, sun block, gloves, insect repellent, and sunglasses. The other compartments held my snacks, fleece, small first aid kit, and other necessary items. I was also able place both my trekking poles in one of the side mesh pockets securely when I wasn't using them while climbing the cables. I carried a 2L hydration bladder, in addition to a 1L nalgene bottle on the side. Even with all this weight, I was comfortable. The padding was comfy as well, and my back was kept dry, despite my sweating through a 85 degree hike. My only small gripe, as others have mentioned, is that I wish the zippers for the main compartment went down further to make it easier to get to things. I am highly satisfied with this day pack, as it fits my needs and petite frame perfectly. I am 5'1" at 105lbs, with 17" torso, and had a difficult time finding a comfortable pack before the Gregory Maya 18 came along. Other people who are taller/bigger may not find the pack as comfy.
This pack is perfect for trail running, cycling and hiking! Whether a quick run after work or a longer day hike. It's the only one I've found that really moves when you move, yet stays snug against your body. Highly adjustable for a great fit! Lots of variety and size of compartments including easy access to small items. Tube management system is great for grabbing a quick drink without stopping. It was a little less comfortable when I adjusted it out to wear a heavier jacket underneath, but for most of what I do, it couldn't be better.
The size of the pack is decent, but I had a difficult time getting to anything in the bottom of the pack. I took this on an all day hike on Mt Whitney, and I found that I kept unloading most of the pack to get to what I needed. I agree that the zippers just don't go down far enough for easy access. I'm probably going to return it and find another pack.
I bought this for my 7 yr old daughter for overnight hiking. That was my fault. The pack is definitely a day pack. LOVE the options on it. A lot of configurations and a loop that if you pull it I have no idea what it does (but I am pretty sure it was a good thing). However it is smaller than I thought (again my fault) and I had to trade it in for a bigger one. Definitely a well made pack though. The only thing I would of liked to of seen on it was straps on the bottom to strap things exterenally ( like a hiking air mattress)
Used on a 3 week Alaska trip and found it invaluable for carrying the clothing layers I was often adding/subtracting during our various hikes and adventures. I was amazed at the capacity of this small pack and the functionality of the various compartments. It is well-made and sturdy.
My sister gave me this pack since I've got a small frame (5'3") and have had a surprisingly hard time finding a truly comfortable day pack. This one is great; lightweight and really comfortable, even on extended hikes. I had no trouble packing a rain jacket, lunch, water, and extra snacks (and there's room to spare). Love the waist strap pockets -- great for sunscreen and a small point and shoot camera. I intend to use it daily on an extended photo and dive trip to the Florida Keys later this summer.
This is a good-sized pack. It holds my 3-liter Platypus Hydration Bladder, and still has room for a light jacket, lunch, and a few other essentials. It's very comfortable on my petite 5'1" frame, and the hip padding is in just the perfect place! The nylon webbing of the belt can be stuffed into a little pocket on the hip padding if you don't want to use it. The 'black' of the Black Orchid is a much prettier dark grey in person. Two things would make this perfect for me: 1) the zipper openings would come down further, making it easier to access the nice roomy interior. 2) The odd 'media' pocket at the top would be eliminated and the interior would start higher up on the pack. I really like how the tops of the shoulder straps and the hip belt moves & flexes with you. It will make this a perfect pack for me to use while biking or skating outside. I'm petite and have a short torso, and this pack fits me perfectly! Women who are significantly taller than me should be careful and try this pack on in person before buying.
I love this lightweight little pack. I'm petite (15" torso, 27" waistband), and it sits very well on my frame. It expands to fit my camera (DSLR), extra lens, tablet, small water bladder, extra water, light jacket, granola bars, pen and journal in the main and side compartments, and lip balm, cards, cash, keys, dog bags and phone in the waist band and "media" pockets. There's also a little velcro attach-y thingie on one shoulder strap that I usually use to keep my water hose mouthpiece easily accessible. The pack is well balanced, launders easily, and is nicely rugged, especially the zippers. I initially bought it as a minimalist day-pack and biking backpack. I've since also used it for urban day-trips, work, bouldering and hiking with my dog, sleepovers, an emergency gym bag, beach trips, car camping, etc. Its incredible utility is the reason I'm strongly leaning towards a full-sized Gregory travel backpack. Between the two, I'll should be set for almost all travel. My only (minor) gripe is that I would like for the the zippers on the main compartment to come down an inch or two more so I don't have to wrestle my camera in and out of the pack. Other than that, the entire pack is very well thought out.
