Almost 5 star...
Great length and cut for an adult (not too long, not too baggy, not cargo shorts). Love the material...light weight and seems durable. My only two nitpiks are related to the pockets. I'm not a fan of the velcro rear pocket closure-it's a bit cumbersome and it seems like a piece that could fail in the future (speculation). The front pockets are just a bit small...i carry a small pocket knife with a clip. With knife in pocket, the opening becomes very snug (see pic). A workaround is to use the lower, forward facing pocket on the right. No biggy.
Pretty comfortable, but...
Comfortable and pretty durable. I've had these about six months. One pocket velcro square has ripped from it's stitching. Fabric held, though. Main complaint is the inner button flap that backs up the waist snap at the zipper. It's way to big. When buttoned, it effectively blocks the reason one normally pulls down the zipper for. I have to leave the flap unbuttoned to allow nature to take its course. Otherwise, I wear these regularly and like them. Though the flap design may encourage me to look around before buying another pair.
BEST SHORTS EVER.
Easily my favorite pair of shorts. Most shorts I try on these days are too long. These shorts are the perfect length. The material is lightweight and dries quickly. I've worn them out on the lake in place of swim trunks a couple of times already. I've never been one to necessarily like a ton of pockets on my shorts, but these pockets are done very nicely. There are two zippered pockets at the bottom of each leg that are hidden away nicely and I keep my keys in one of them. I thought the cell phone pocket on the right leg was just a gimmick, but I use it ALL THE TIME and love it. Now both my regular pockets are clutter free instead of bulging with phones and keys.
Great shorts with one flaw
The other comments cover these shorts well. Just thought I'd comment on the choice of using a snap style button. I have to wear a belt with these shorts because nearly every time I sit down the waist button will unsnap. Perhaps I'm just caught between sizes but I feel a standard jeans style button would make these perfect.
Like these shorts
I like these enough that I went to buy some more. Stop reading there if you just want the "bottom line". So, unfortunately, I originally bought these on vacation at a US National Park based store -- i.e. not an REI, it was a sort-of "emergency" purchase. :-) But after removing the store tags, there is no precise way to identify the style -- so the next ones I bought (at REI) turned out a little longer in the seam by mistake. Kuhl makes a number of rather similar styles. Perhaps Kuhl should stitch in a product ID of some kind to help happy customers ease re-purchasing, no? My second nit-pick with these (also true of almost every pair of shorts that I buy) is that the front-most two belt loops are a little too far apart. Ideally they'd be a bit closer together, to prevent any potential hanging belt-buckle problem -- my only waterproof belt has a somewhat heavy buckle. (My wife says that I am too detail oriented)
Terrible Pocket Design
The Ramblr shorts or ok, except the pocket design. On the right side (only) is a tall, narrow pocket with opens forward at a 45 degree angle. It's at the perfect height to catch on things at waist height, like kitchen drawer handles for instance. My Ramblrs survived about five of these drawer encounters before the handle ripped the pocket down the seams.
Perfect Shorts
The execution of these shorts are spot on. They fit well riding my mountain bike, sitting in my office, or taking my son to baseball practice. They are simply well thought out, with pockets where and how I need them. The snap, internal button and zipper make a great fit. They aren't too snug in the stride and they aren't baggy. The material makes them cool and light, but hefty in endurance. The only way to make them better is have them in a variety of inches as compared to two inch jumps.
Great shorts
I really like these shorts. The are comfortable and light. The only issue I have is that the size runs a little small.
Ramblin' on
I like these shorts because the are comfortable, durable, and stylish. The only thing I don't like are the mesh pockets. These are not board shorts, so why use mesh in the first place ? I get that mesh cuts down on weight and drains pockets but I use these shorts for everyday wear and hiking. What good are pockets if everything falls through? So lately, I've been placing both keys & cell phone in the only "secure" cell phone pocket. As for my wallet, I find myself constantly checking to make sure it's still there in my mesh pocket.
A great pair of shorts!
As an owner of a half-dozen pair of KUHL pants, these are the best. Great fabric, excellent fit and it appears they have improved the snap so that it stays closed and does not pop open. Some of their fabrics are terrible, but fortunately this one is the best. Great buy and perhaps time to get another one.
