Got a "K-8"...? Protect it!!!!
Having bought both the "K"-8, tent and Tech Garage, which even on sale are substantial investments, I decided to protect at least the tent's floor with this addition. While it normally provides protection from wear and tear, it also provides a clean surface on which you can fold and pack the tent and fly at the end of your camp stay. It also helps to determine final placement of your tent before you start staking it out, assuring ample room for staking out the fly when a larger footprint is necessary. All in all a welcome addition to your camping ensemble.
Great Template
We bought the Kingdom 8 tent last yearand just used it this Labor Day so we hadn't had a chance to test drive it camping to see how big it really is. As we were scouting a spot for the new tent in the campsite, we wanted to make sure it had had room, but didn't want to unpack it and roll it out. Not only is the footprint a great bottom layer, it's a great template to lay out first to make sure your tent can fit in the carved out tent spot. Try it in one spot - doesn't work, well then pick it up and try another spot. All without having to unfold your tent.
Good mud barrier
The footprint really helps keep the bottom of the tent protected. Our first use was in a wind and rain storm and the footprint came home a muddy mess but the floor of the tent was fine. It cleaned up easily with a hose and dried quickly. The one star off is for the general fit. In winds the grommet attachments to the tent poles come unattached fairly readily. It might be best to attach the footprint to the poles first, then the rainfly and then the tent attachments. The tent attachments stay very firmly attached to the poles.
Foot print is ok
The footprint is ok, but the instructions and ease of use... Its not color coded or marked in any other way. REI answer to what side is up is "the shinny side". I don't know maybe its me, but I couldn't figure out what side is shinny. Just to be sure I asked my wife and kids to tell me, but the result was the same. Front and back ? Same story. REI answer is the "wider one". Just kill me, but I couldn't figure out what side of my tent is wider and in the end I had to reverse it after I put the tent on top of it. How difficult it is to just write on it front and top or something like that ?
A Must Have - But Buy Two!
We actually purchased two of these footprints. The one was placed underneath on the ground and we placed the tent on top. The second one we placed inside the tent on the tent bottom to protect the tent floor on both sides. This assured nothing would get poked through or put any holes on the actual tent floor. These footprints fold up extremly small and seem to be very durable. Durability was our major concern before we agreed we would not purchase a tarp, but use these footprints to see how they performed. The first night of camping brought 13+ hours of torrential rain and wind. The tent floor remained completely dry except for a few water droplets that seeped up from the ground overnight where four teenagers were walking around and playing on the floor pushing on the water logged ground underneath. I would highly recommend!
No color coded tabs?
We purchased this to go along with our Kingdom 8 tent. It does it’s job at protecting the floor. The reason for 2 stars - the above picture shows a footprint with colored tabs to position it correctly. The footprint we purchased in the store has all green tabs - no more color coding. Which is absolutely ridiculous because the footprint for the Kingdom 8 only goes one way. Believe me, when setting up on a hot day, you may say a few choice words when you have to turn everything to line the tent up with the footprint. Buyer beware.
Good Investment
After spending so much money on the Kingdom 8 tent it seemed silly not to buy the footprint. So far it has only been used once and I am pleased with how it protected the tent. We had only a little rain but it kept the bottom of the tent dry and clean.
A must for your tent.
I bought this item, because a tarp for the bottom of my tent will only go so far. Since it's sized for the bottom of the tent, you don't need to worry about it not fitting correctly.
Makes tent setup easy
Color coded for back and front. Protects the bottom of tent and keeps the water away. This is a must have.
Perfect fit
It's mid October and I have finished my second full season in the Kingdom 8 and the footprint that goes with it. I start camping in May and end in October-November depending on the weather here in Idaho. The footprint keeps a lot of moisture off of the tent base as well as pitch or other sticky stuff like discarded gum or candy. This is not a one size fits all product, it fits perfectly. A recommended product.
