Great All Around Bag
I bought this bag a few weeks ago mainly for school, which it is great for. I got it to replace a timbuk2 bag that I have been using since I started college 2 years ago. This bag is great for school, I am and English Ed major and carry ALOT of books to and from school, and this bag fits all of the comfortably. I started using it for day hikes and a few overnighters, and works great for that as well. it fits a lot of things in a relatively small area, small for a bagpack buy it, enjoy it, i know its a little on the pricy side, but i think it is well worth it
Great daypack
I use this pack for a carry-on, a day pack, a overnight bag, and with a few modifications, a backpacking bag. The main compartment has plenty of room and is easy to pack in, especially if you roll your clothes. The front organizer pocket is great as well. The stuffit pocket, however, is probably the pack's shining feature. It is huge! Before I bought my ClickElite camera backpack, I loaded up this pack with 35lbs of camera gear, a 100 oz. CamelBak, snacks and other gear for a nine mile hike in GSMNP. It was comfortable to wear and the straps and back panel vented heat and moisture as well as could be expected. I liked the detachable waistbelt and I wish the sternum strap was detachable as well. I ended up cutting it off. My only suggestion to make the pack a bit better: put lashing strap patches on the bottom of the pack. That would give the pack the capability of a 3-4 day overnight hike, if you pack light.
Versatile day pack
I bought this pack specifically for day hikes. It replaces a 20 liter pack that was at times too small depending on when and where I was hiking. Note that this is actually a 33 liter pack, not an even 30 as the description states. I love the semi-rigid back panel, it's basically a plastic washboard behind the back padding. It prevents things from poking you, and helps the pack hold it's shape while still retaining some flexibility. The back area in general has good ventilation, and the hip belt fits my 42" waist. I'm also really liking the number of pockets. The main compartment has an internal "laptop" sleeve (also great for maps, extra shirt, etc,) as well as a soft pocket for sunglasses, music players, phones, etc. There's a well covered feed-thru in the main pocket if you want to run ear buds or a hydration bladder through it, although the straps lack anything to hold a hose in place (not an issue for me, as I prefer water bottles). The smaller front pocket has an internal mesh "key pocket" with a clip inside it, and a ton of various sized organizer slots. I keep my compass, fire starter, batteries, etc, in those. The large front mesh pouch expands quite a bit and is great for hauling out trash, stuffing clothing into, or whatever suites your needs. The side mesh pockets hold bike-sized water bottles securely, they won't fall out if you bend over (I haven't tried full sized Nalgenes yet). The daisy chains are handy for a variety of things. I use mine to clip a red LED to for night hikes with a party or along road sections. Weight is also excellent for such a feature rich pack. It's right in line a lot of the more technically styled low-frills packs out there. I find that the pack feels a little awkward on me when lightly loaded, and doesn't get comfy until around the 5lb mark. Still comfy at about 13lbs, but I haven't tried anything heavier than that. The shoulder straps are pretty bulky for a modern backpack of this size. I'm making the assumption that a more modern foam could do the same job with less bulk, but at this price and with all of the other features I can't complain (and maybe I'm wrong about the foam). I would have also loved to see a couple shock cords on either side of the pack and strap loops on the bottom for lightweight overnight trips, but again - at this price I can't complain. I foresee myself using this pack for years to come.
Perfect as expected!
As usual, my purchase at REI was perfect. Mountain Hardware products are manufactured with reality based uses and this pack does not disappoint. I use it daily for my commute and have used it as a carryon on a trip to Wyoming. More room than I need and great organization. Thanks REI and MH!!
Wonderful all-arounder
I purchased this pack six months ago to replace my Dakine school pack that I have used and repaired for the past four years. I have found ample space and organizer pockets for ALL of my school needs plus the mesh Stuffit pocket holds all of my gym gear quite easily. In the past years, I had overloaded my Dakine pack and needed to replace the exploded zipper, therefore I love the high capacity of this pack. It is also great as a weekend or carry-on pack. Since my loads run 20+ lbs, I try not to lift the pack from the top handle - I don't want to risk pulling a seam, just in case. My only complaint comes from my long torso - the lower strap is far above my hip bones, around my belly button, eliminating its usefulness, and the chest strap is too low on my sternum, even at the highest setting. Also, if this were to be marketed strictly as a school bag, an insulated pocket would be useful for those who do not live on campus, but as this is a day pack, that is not truly a problem. It has a pocket for a hydration bladder which I normally use for my laptop and an excellent feature for organizing the interior of the pack. Additional loops on the bottom would have been useful as far as taking a sleeping bag or other overnight gear along, but, again, that is available in other packs. Overall, I love this upgrade in gear and can only hope that it holds up to the abuse it is about to receive.
This backpack is great for EVERYTHING!
I'm really happy with this pack and will definitely be keeping it for a long time. Basically, I use it for everything where a 30L or less capacity is needed. For example: I take it on day hikes of all kinds. It has a hydration sleeve that works extremely well. Enough space for extra layers, rain gear, and even a bivy if you're so inclined. The back mesh pocket is HUGE and works well to store a pair of shoes or wet rain gear so it doesn't get everything in your bag wet. I take it on ultralight overnights. Same as above, but with a small bivy, a sleeping pad (the Thermarest Neo Air specifically) and a lightweight stove. It holds all this stuff with room for more! I take it on cold mountains. Last time I did this, took it up Mt. Washington in January. It had the room for my compressed MH Subzero SL Parka, crampons (in the mesh pouch), several 1L nalgene water bottles, extra socks, food, etc. After adding a cheap universal velcro strap to the top of the where the mesh pocket clips to the backpack, the loop at the bottom-middle of the pack serves as a perfect ice axe holder. The compression straps on the side work as excellent trekking pole holders as well. I commute with it. Holds my gym clothes, cycling shoes, runnning shoes, water, and work clothes. The top smaller pocket is perfect to permanently store toiletries like deodorant, shampoo, toothbrush, petzl e-light, micro fiber towel, etc. The hydration sleeve becomes a perfect 13"+ laptop holder as well. AND there's a specific sunglasses holder made of microfiber or some other fiber that won't scratch sunglasses. I've put this pack through the paces for almost two years now and it's never let me down. It's been submerged, frozen, sat in 110 degree sunlight, caked in mud, dropped, pulled, scraped and dragged with no ill effect. It looks new after a little cleaning. My sole annoyance when I got the bag was that, on the large zippers for the main compartment, the metal cylinders that serve as pull tabs on the zipper click annoying against each other while walking/running/cycling. However, I just wrapped these in half-width strips of duct tape and now they don't click against each other AND I have several feet of duct tape available for emergencies. Something you might not like is the hip belt. It works really well for me, it's thin and is completely out of the way except when I need it. It really stabilizes a load while running or cycling. However, its thinness may be uncomfortable if that kind of thing bothers you. For a day hike or trail running, more substantial padding on the belt may be nice (ala Osprey packs of this size), but because I use this pack for everything every day, the Osprey padded belt sides would really get annoying. This was an especially obvious decision for me when I consider that I only use a hip belt at all maybe 5% of the time I'm using the backpack, and only wish it was more padded maybe 20% of the time I'm actually using the hip belt. i.e. in only 1% of this backpacks use would I want a more substantial hipbelt and if it had a more substantial hipbelt, it would annoy me 99% of the time I was using the backpack.
