Great Coffee Filter
I've tried most methods for making coffee while camping. As a former barista and roaster, I tend to care a bit too much about the quality of my coffee. This filter has been fantastic. My favorite way to make coffee at home is a pour over, and this allows you to do that. I've used this with and without a paper filter and both ways are great. It allows for a much cleaner cup than a french press, and you can use much better coffee than with instant coffee, without adding much more space to your setup. As long as you grind your coffee beforehand, this will do the job. It's incredibly light too, and collapses so it takes up almost no space at all. I highly recommend this for both car camping and backpacking.
Perfect for on the go!
I bought this initially to avoid the clutter of a coffee pot, and I had just moved into a smaller apartment. I am always camping and outside, so this was a great option for me. Easy to dispose of grounds and clean up after. Fits most cups.... thicker lipped mugs make it want to pop off. I felt pretty fancy telling people I drink my coffee as a pour-over, haha! I recommend it for any single, busy person who loves quality coffee. **Pour your hot water slowly and incrementally to avoid the grounds from over-flowing. Also, let the bubbles from boiling subside to not burn your coffee. I got yo back. :)
Great option for great camp coffee!
Im very picky about coffee. If I could bring my Chemex on the trail with me I would! I prefer the flavor of a conical pour over brew to anything. This delivers! I LOVE how flat it folds and how light it is but best of all it makes a stelar cup of coffee when used with the right grind and the right roast. For me, finely ground, quality coffee delivered the best result. I did use a size 2 filter but i dont know that its necessary. Highly recommend!
Great Coffee Maker
I'm a self diagnosed coffee freak; I roast my own beans. When I saw this little device I was skeptical that it would work and make strong enough coffee. So I tried it out at home first, and it worked. I just returned from a 4 day backpacking trip up to 11,000 feet and took the GSI Java Drip Coffee Maker and it worked perfectly. It was able to fit onto a couple of different cups (home mug and a couple of different light weight cups), and I was able to make very strong coffee with little effort. It's extremely light and easy to use. I was really stoked. This little coffee maker is now my new go to device for backpacking, camping and travel.
Good space-to-flavour ratio
I purchased this as an alternative to packing a small French press. I liked that it could be stored flat inside some other food containers I have. Having brewed several cups of coffee with it, I find that the water drains quite quickly compared to a "real" drip filter, so you may need to change the volume/grind of coffee you usually use. But this is much easier to pack and easier to clean than a French press, so I think it's a fair compromise. The plastic "arms" seem to accommodate a wide variety of mugs, although I do worry a bit about their durability in the long-term. The product is cheap enough that I would not worry too much about that though.
Great Coffee, Tiny Device
Watched a youtube video on pour-over coffeemaking beforehand, and ours turned out very strong and delicious. We used the suggested 3 rounded Tablespoons of med-fine grounds per cup. Other reviewers mentioned that the water went through too fast, producing a weak cup, but we did not have this problem with the ratio & grind. Tried this ultra light little device with and without a filter... found that it cleaned up so easily without it, we ditched using them. Grounds dump out without sticking much and the residue rinses out clean. Good product.
Minimalist way to have excellent brew
This featherweight and simple device makes brewing excellent drip coffee an easy process in the field. The three "feet" slip onto the rim of your mug or cup. Coffee grounds of your choice go into the mesh basket, then hot water is poured (not too fast) over the coffee and the brew drips down into the mug. Experiment a bit to develop the grounds to water ratio that produces the strength of your liking, then stick with it for a good cup every time. To clean up merely dump the used grounds out of the basket. It's a winner!
Embrace the SUCK!
I recently had the opportunity to use this product on a dispersed camping trip with my son. It worked flawlessly, when I paired it with an insulated coffee mug life got even better. I also bought another brand of backpacking pour over coffee maker, so I was able to compare the two against each other. THIS is the one you want, the other had a problem with coffee clogging the small strainer, this one did not.
Coffee filter
Worked great and packs up small.
Perfect coffee for the trail!!!!
I was so excited to get this because it matches/fits my classic unbreakable GSI mug. Two tablespoons coffee, "blooming" the grounds by wetting and let set for about 15 sec and then pour in a slow circle until the desired amount is in the mug...Voila! I have made 3 cups at home the first day and can't wait to use it on the trail. There's nothing like coffee on the trail.
