Good idea; one CRITICAL flaw
Since I invested heavily in Yakima accessories for round crossbars years ago...and now have a vehicle with factory aerobars...I wasn't looking forward to spending the money to adapt the fitments I had. Fortunately, the good people at Yakima feel my pain, and created this product, at $45, which keeps me from having to spend $250 for new ski mounts (I have the LiftTicket6). I'm not always with my skis/car when they are on the rack, and I like the locking feature of Yakima racks. HOWEVER, you need to know that when this is attached to your aerobars, your gear can be removed using the thumbwheel (shown in the product pictures). That's right...a thief would not even need any tools other than an opposable thumb! So, while this did save me ~$200, when I have 4 sets of skis on the car, that's a ~$2K risk. I'm not sure what the solution here is, but Yakima--if you're reading this--please figure out a way that these can't be so simply removed from the vehicle.
Scarrrrry !!!!
This rack broke - on the highway - between the kayak J shape and the piece that attaches to the truck rack. That is, the clamp was still on my truck, the J portion hanging from my tie rope, and my kayak skidded down the highway. The construction is to blame. The J portion is attached to the clamp with a bolt and a very tiny washer. The plastic cracked right around the bolt and washer allowing the J portion to fly off. I don't know yet how the company will respond to my damaged kayak and dents on my new pathfinder. ( as it happened just yesterday) I'm relieved that no one was hurt. One lesson learned - no matter how secure a rack LOOKS - never drive behind one.
Great way to reuse old Yakima racks on a new car
I purchased these to reuse my 20 year old Yakima snowboard racks with my new Audi Q5. While I agree with the other reviewers that the box arrives with a confusing bundle of parts, the instructions are very detailed and you'll have no problem putting these together if you are reasonably handy and patient. Contrary to what other reviewers have said, I had no problem getting them to work with the base mounts that are differing lengths, it's all a matter of connecting bolts in the right order. And they fit very securely on my car, when I grab and shake my snowboard, the whole car shakes. The only negative is that they don't have a way to lock to the car, though the original locks on the rack work. In a pinch, a cable lock could be used to attach the racks to the car's crossbar.
MightMount used on Toyota factory rack on 2008 Hig
Initially disappointed with the product because I found the broken & missing hardware in the package. Returned to REI & received a new kit. Installed on my factory Toyota rack and it mounted with no problems. Although I wish the kit came with a 2 1/2" bolt for another mounting height option. Also make the spacers stackable. I bought my own bolts and the kit worked well.
Great for skis
I bought this for a new Subaru Crosstrek (to fit the old Button-down 6 ski rack), since Yakima no longer makes vehicle-specific Mighty Mounts. Took a while to install the first time, just because of being unfamiliar with the procedure, and getting the fit just right. It's easy once you understand the steps though. They fit snugly to the factory aero crossbar using the smaller bail and small bolts. One drawback is the inability to lock the mounts, as they are designed to be unscrewed by hand. However, since the ski rack itself is lockable, a thief would need to steal the entire assembly, skis and all if the rack is locked. I actually bought a set of common hex nuts and washers for about a dollar at the hardware store, and installed these on the extra threading below the thumb wheel screws, and tightened them with a wrench. Now a thief would need at least an adjustable wrench to remove the hex nuts, so while it's still not theft-proof, it can't be stolen in a "crime of opportunity" by someone just walking by, if they aren't carrying tools.
Don’t believe Internet Info
Based on info from Internet and a review in REI about this product We purchased these to utilize our Yakima Hullraisers for our kayaks. We got them just before our planned trip and first page of instructions States “ Do NOT use with Hullraisers”. We are returning them but I suggest REI delete that other recommendation for this product that the reviewer states he used for his Hullraisers?
Flexible, easy to use - and steal
I was able to use these with a number of older accessories on my new Subaru in-mount. Unfortunately, these were also easy for thieves to remove the towers and my basket in broad daylight. Not worth the loss.
Fits OEM Crossbar on Audi Q5
I have two 15 year old Yakima LockJaw upright bicycle mounts. The LockJaw mounts have two attachment points in the front and one in the rear. The Universal MightyMounts firmly attach the LockJaw mount to the OEM crossbars. The Universal MightyMounts cannot (directly) be used with fork type bicycle mounts like the Copperhead.
Does the job, but needs improvement
A must have, if you have your own non-yakima crossbars on your car's roof rack. Strong mounts, but not the best design. I needed these universal mounts for my Yakima Hullraiser Kayak mounts. The build is a bit confusing at first, like putting together an ikea dresser. It has a tilt option that compinsates for the curve of your roof, but you set this before you construct the whole mount, not adjustable after the mount is tightened together or on your car's cross-bars. The other problem is the hand tightening nuts are a bit tricky to tighten and never feel really tight. Also, when I purchased these mounts at REI, one of the mounts was missing pieces from the factory, it was a seeled bag, had to drive back and exchange for a new package. When it's all put together the mounts seem to work well and are strong. However, I think the engineering and build could be better for these.
Bad design
No locking mechanism. !!!!!! Can be taken off your roof with no problem
