I recently bought this jacket to replace my OG Ghost Whisperer hoodie. After trying a few other brands and models, I ultimately bought and kept the Ghost Whisperer UL. I use this jacket for almost any occasion: dog walks, hiking, backpacking, camping, or sitting outside at a brewery. It also fits under a shell or rain jacket for extra protection from wind/rain while keeping me cozy. I love this jacket because it is suitable for almost any season here in Colorado; keeps me super warm in the cold if I add a layer or two underneath, and keeps me cozy without becoming sweaty in the months where the temp drops rapidly in the evening. I did a bit of online research before buying this jacket, mainly wanted a comparison between the OG GW and the UL GW, which I never found. The main difference besides the weight and fill to me is there is no draw cord at hem on UL (probably the most annoying weight saving cut IMO), but I found that if I need to batten down the hatches on an extra cold day, I'll pull the draw cord on my layers that are under the jacket (fleece or vest) which works just as well. I think the chest of the UL is a little bigger and allows thicker layers, the OG is tight in my armpits, but workable. (I have a L in both styles, so the fit on the UL is a bit more roomy). I have a larger chest and I can comfortably layer a thick fleece under the UL jacket if I wanted, and still have full range motion in my arms. Cons: The zipper is delicate just like the OG (coincidentally, my OG is in the repair shop with a broken zipper..). No draw cord; I think this jacket runs a tad big, and a draw cord would secure me into the jacket a little better. Not a ton of water resistance, I went for a walk while it was snowing and my arms were wet when I got home about 30 minutes later. If I was smarter, I would have thrown my shell over instead of heading out with my puffy on only. Pros: Extreme warmth to weight ratio. Awesome color (Gold Hour). Fairly wind resistant (initial stress test of this jacket was climbing a 13er on Christmas Day. It was super windy and leg-numbing cold from 12,000ft and above. I wore a thin wool base layer, a medium weight wool zip up over the base layer, and this jacket and stayed nice and toasty). Hood is a plus for me, when the weather gets really nasty, it's nice to extend your "blanket" over your head. Jacket moves with you, and I don't feel restricted. You can't tighten the hood, but it is constructed well, and I don't miss that feature. The hood also lays really nice when not in use, when I walked in a snow storm with my hood down, I didn't have any snow in my hood when I got back. Tips: Give this jacket a few wears to fluff itself up. Initially, I tried it on out of the box and went outside and felt the cold right away. After the 3-4th wear, the jacket was nice and fluffy and super warm. Jacket packs down better by itself rather than trying to stuff it into it's own pocket. Buy a roll of ripstop tape in case you get any snags- this stuff is really sticky and patches up any holes in a pinch. I had my OG GW for 3 years and had 1 tiny hole that I patched near the cuff, no issues and barely even notice it.
This puffy is the lightest puffy I have ever worn. It scared me at first because I get really cold, and I didn't want to risk backpacking in below freezing temps with it. However, I was blown away by how warm it was!! And I was so grateful that I didn't have to carry a bulky puffy all weekend! I am an outdoor education major in South Carolina and an outdoor guide, and being warm is the thing I value the most on trips. In saying that, I did have several layers on underneath the puffy when it was 25 degrees, but I was very warm (and I tend to be cold even with a lot of layers!). I also appreciated the size of the puffy because I always layer a lot, and it was just roomy enough to do so.
This jacket replaced my well-worn and well-loved Women's Ghost Whisperer Jacket. Although marketed with 1000-fill RDS, I was dubious that it would be warmer as it is just as lightweight as my old one (with 800-fill RDS). I put it to the test this morning, walking 4 miles in blustery, wintery temps, and I was just fine despite only wearing a long sleeve tee. Fit is comfortable, and the fabric allows movement. I'm hopeful this one is more tear resistant than my last jacket. In fairness, it held up pretty well until my rough-housing dog and her claws tore it in several spots. =/
Absolutely love MTNHW gear, they’re my go to brand for most things! I work as a ski instructor and am usually always layering and typically run a little cold, so to have a puffer that is warm but also can pack down to stuff in a backpack is awesome. Also love the bright green! Such a rad color. My one con is that the stitching on the jacket is already breaking around the pocket. So I am a little worried about the down leaking or moving around. I have been wearing it a lot because I love it but I haven’t had it for longer than a couple months so a little disappointed.
Love this jacket!! It is lightweight and warm, just used it when I climbed Mount Adams, WA
As a backpacking guide in Utah a well made down jacket is a must. I work in both the desert and the mountains so having a coat that is lightweight enough for the trail and yet till incredibly warm is a non-negotiable. I can honestly say I have never been so excited about a jacket in my life. Not only did I order the best color (gold hour) its toasty warm, light as air, and fits like a glove. I’ve worn it nonstop since I’ve gotten it and don’t plan on taking it off except for the occasional shower between treks. I'm 5'9" with a full bust and have no problem moving my arms or doing cartwheels in the Ghost Whisperer. The elastic around the arm cuffs keeps it in place. The pockets are large and can hold your coffee flask if needed (I've tested it). Made from the 1000-fill RDS- Certified down, it’s ultra light without having to skimp on warmth or style. The ripstop fabric gives me peace of mind when tromping through bushes. It’s got zippered hand pockets that double as a stuff sack, which makes keeping my backpack organized just that much easier. Truly this is the best down jacket I've ever had and I can't say enough good things about it. Wear it backpacking, snowshoeing, desert romping, mountain frolicking.. anything you can imagine.. this is the coat for you!
I have taken this puffy on 6 backpacking trips in the Colorado Rockies this season, and it's the best! I am an ultralight-to-lightweight backpacker with a volume obsession when it comes to my pack, and this jacket packs down so small and is so lightweight. Paired with a midlayer, I have been fine in temps down to 30 degrees F. I am a 5'6" size 10/12 woman and the Large is perfect for me, including 2-3 layers under it. It fits under my rain shell just fine. Love the hood. It's a yay for me.
I have both the regular ghost whisperer and the UL. The UL is my go-to. It's so warm, light, and packs up so small. I can't rave about this jacket enough - the yellow is so bright and beautiful. There are extremely limited quantities so owning it makes me feel special! If you're counting ounces, or even if you're not, look into this product. People cannot believe it when they lift it off my chair to hang it up - it's so light. Can't wait to ski in this puppy!
Amazing for every outdoor adventure! I wear it hiking, fat biking in the snow, riding down mountain passes on my road bike. It fits in a jersey pocket or in a small pack. Absolutely worth the price. You need this jacket. I just bought a second one. For reference, women's M is same as Men's small. I have the Citron. Because I wear them biking, I bought the Men's orange as my second.
I really appreciate how light and packable this down jacket is while maintaining impressive warmth when layered properly. The bright green color is super fun too! The fit is true to size, I opted for a small instead of extra small (I'm 5 feet tall) and I appreciate having room to layer underneath while it still having a little shape and no extra bulk under a shell jacket.
