I’d actually give it 4. 75 stars. Everybody makes a 20L daypack, so the challenge is finding the “best” one. I can’t say this one is the best without trail testing all the others, but I’m super happy with it. I wanted a good, accessible phone pocket and the stretchy one on the pack strap is perfect. I really like that there’s a simple stretchy hipbelt pocket for easy stashing and access, as well as a more secure zip hip pocket. Like with every other pack I’ve used with a zip hip pocket, this one attempts to use a bellows design to hold a reasonable amount of stuff but it’s finicky to open and close. I’ve typically not used trekking pole holders, but these work really well. I was really hoping the back mesh stuff pocket would hold a climbing helmet. It does, but just barely and requiring some creative packing. Ice axe holder - check. Rain cover - check. Love the mesh stretch side pockets so you can carry a couple of Nalgene bottles if you want, or bear spray and umbrella. It’s nice to be able to adjust the sizing slightly, definitely made an improvement in the fit for me. The one thing that drops my score is the water bladder hook. It’s tiny and terribly placed. You have to take everything out of the top pocket to even have a chance of working it, and it’s one of the tiny buckles that are irritating to use. I’ll be adding a hook like many other packs use ASAP. But no hesitation from me in recommending this pack.
