I bought both sizes of this pack in the hopes that they would be a Peak Design grand slam, they are not. First, these bags were heavily marketed as camera bags they are not. The 25 is ok if you are only going to carry a few things on a quick in and out. Keep in mind that there is very little organization going on with this bag. the 2 side zippered pockets do not hold a lot especially in the way of camera gear. If you put little stuff in there it will be hard to find because the pockets don't open up much. Anything that goes into the front flappy part will protrude into the camera cube space as a lump. The front flappy part can realistically only carry small soft stuff or very flat items if its going to be useful. The laptop sleeve isn't padded from the main compartment. If anything from your camera cube protrudes outside the cube (it will because of how shallow the cube is) it can have the potential of ruining your laptop/tablet. The sternum straps are difficult to use and horribly uncomfortable. There is a lack of any grab handles except for the top and it is very uncomfortable to use if you carry any weight in this bag. The bag comes with extra tie downs which are very long and stringy. Haven't found a good use for them. if you use them to hang a sleeping bag or camp mat from the bottom the leftover string is going to hang down and flap around. If you are a person with any size, the backpack straps are very short. Mine end pretty much above my armpit. This is ridiculous for something that is supposed to be vest style straps. These bags will only hold the V2 camera cubes. This is very bad because the V2 cubes are too small in every size. They are not tall enough so most lenses need to lay down to be protected which obviously takes up twice the space. The good part. The quality of the materials and zippers seems good. You can get a waist strap for the 25, the waist strap for the 45 comes with the bag and is easily removed. These bags are very poorly designed for a photographer which is very disappointing from Peak.
I got the 25L bag as part of the kick starter. Since then I’ve used it for both hiking and multi-week work trips. The bag has a surprising amount of space but still packs down tight. I fit my camera cube, clothes for a week+, toiletries, and 2 laptops in. It was tight, but it all fit in an overhead space on planes. I compliment the backpack with the 7L sling, which fits my book and snacks for traveling. Overall, I love it. It is roomy and comfy, key points for me. I do have to say that it feels a bit too complicated at times. I also wish the attachment points for the various straps were a bit easier to clip into. They kinda lay flat and make it tough to quickly clip in.
I love how this backpack makes packing easier without causing shoulder pain. Before this, I owned an Everyday Backpack 20L, and I find the Outdoor Backpack more practical and comfortable even though it has fewer features for organizing gear. Comfort was the most important reason for the switch, and the Outdoor Backpack provides excellent value. The only reason for 4* is I wish they could update the handle on top with something much softer. It feels too thin and sharp when carrying heavy loads. Also, the addition of a luggage strap could complete this backpack. However, they shared an unlisted video on YouTube showing how you can make a luggage strap with the straps provided.
Backed this product on Kickstarter and have now taken it on several trips. It has become my new favorite travel bag. It holds a surprising amount and keeps nicely secured. Comfortable fit on my shoulders, even when weighted inside. Quick access shoulder pouches have been an great addition to my travel routine, excellent place to quickly stash/access my phone or wallet while going through the airport and security. Multiple tie down points around the bag give me the chance to increase storage if needed. No visible signs of wear after several multiday trips thus far. Another hit product from PD in my eyes.
I'm training for a hut to hut hike in September and started putting this to the test. It is the perfect pack for a three day outing. The pockets in the waistband and shoulder straps keep things available, the material sheds water and dust/dirt, and the various accessibility options keep things easily to hand. There is one thing - for me - that makes it slightly less than five stars. I'm 5'10" with a long (22inch) torso and even with fiddling with various straps it just doesn't fit the way other brands do. This is very personal, and so sad, because I am a huge Peak Design fan and own multiple packs, cubes and now the rolling suitcase. I just can't use it for this particular use case.
I was wringing my hands indecisively up until two days before the Kickstarted ended and I decided I did in fact want ~another~ pack. I climb, hike, travel, and generally beebop around and was drawn to the harness in particular, coupled with the organizational flexibility. I’ve got a couple cubes (camera and otherwise) and figured I could swap them out depending on activity. Initially I wasn’t able to do so as cleanly as I’d hoped, but after a couple months I think I’ve developed a great system that I don’t think I’d be able to use in a less open/accessible bag. The harness is all that I’d hoped for thankfully, and I think with a bit of effort this can be one of the flexible carry options in town.
The bag is nice overall speaking, can load a lot of stuff in it while still maintaining a relatively slim profile. However after three months of everyday usage the front-left zipper puller was broken. As shown in the photo attached I have to tie the two strings up in order to continue using it. Is there any warranty service for this part?
I picked this one up as part of the kickstarter and am very pleased. It’s turned into my go to camera hiking pack and does the job really well. I was a little nervous about the roll top prior to getting it, but it’s actually really good. I mostly access the main compartment via the zip back, and then just use the top access for throwing in loose items and for quick access, so it’s kind of the best of both worlds. I’ve pared this with a smedium cube and can comfortable carry a body + 70-200 + 24-70 + 16-35 and my beloved 35 F1.4 prime and have room for snacks, water and medkit.
I have so many Peak Design bags it's embarrassing lol But i have lots of needs... so I change from one to another as needed The Outdoor Backpack is perfect for me outside camping and hiking or for what I really use it for ... getting to and from the office on my bike in crappy weather with camera gear and clothes It's the perfect mix of style meets function, i can have my gear and my clothes / lunch / laptop etc all within reach in a wonderfully waterproof system I grabbed this during their Kickstart campaign and I cannot be happier! This bag is bomb proof in rain, sleet and snow... sure it looks like someone pooped on it from the road spray BUT I know my gear is warm and dry and that's what counts
I purchased this bag to use for a travel kit for photography. While I can certainly configure it for a small kit, I do find it to be a bit heavy when adding the packing cubes (ie. the medium and the xxs) and my 16" MacBook Pro. Additionally, I am a 6'4" man with a somewhat athletic build and broad shoulders and find that the shoulder straps and quite tight and small. I will use the bag around town mostly slinging it on one shoulder but most likely not use it for any long trips requiring it to be on both shoulders. Construction is excellent as with all Peak Design Products.
