Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Shoes broke in after 2 runs. The sole is a tad bit thicker than the old Racer and the laces are shorter but everything else is the same. Still feels the same as the old Racer too. Would recommend
I am avid escalante racer user, the original. So, yes, I was extremely skeptical about the escalante 2, and was expecting this to be a meh review. I was surprised to find how much I love these shoes. I am an active mom of two small ones, currently pregnant, and would run barefoot if I could. I'm athletic, but have always disliked shoes because I use every muscle in my foot and I expect to be able to feel my feet operate smoothly. I don't want restriction. So, you'd know from that, that I love the freedom, flexibility, and light weight of the original escalante, but sometimes I need more support because I'm not running on a track but heavy pavement. This shoe still allows for flexibility, not as much as the original, which is okay, but enough to give my feet ligaments space to properly extend so they can work in unison instead of putting too much pressure on only one part of my foot. This is my biggest beef with most running shoes- they limit your feet to a small extension because their support won't move with your feet, but this running shoe I am pleased to report finally gives a great balance between support and freedom. For full disclosure, I'm still buying my original Escalantes every few months, but these are going to be included in my rotating running gear as well depending on the running surface.
Considerably uncomfortable running shoes. I've owned a pair of Altra's in the past and these are overpriced for the quality of materials. There is no shock absorption in this cement-running soul. The mesh of the fabric is so open that these shoes will fill with rocks and debris! Lastly, a ton of pressure is placed on the top of the foot when the laces are lose and even more so when they are tied properly. The color detail applied to the outside looks like it's sprayed on with a thin layer of paint that will wear off quickly. The wide toe box is the only great thing about this shoe. Plenty of room for all the rocks you'll be running with between your toes.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] First impression of these shoes is that they're super light! I love how they are breathable and comfortable for any activity. They hit lower on my ankle which I like yet still have great stability. So far I have used them for walks, pickleball, HIIT workouts, and even weightlifting lifting! I am very particular when it comes to shoes and these definitely satisfy what I am looking for. I sometimes develop pain in my right foot after wearing similar brands for extended periods. So far with the Escalante Racer 2, this has not happened (even after playing a few hours of pickleball). Only suggestion I have is the coloring. Would love to see these in just black and white (or no more than 2 colors) and I would likely stock up for the next few years!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've been wearing the Escalante and the Escalante Racer for the past few years. As a physical therapist, I love having the wider toe box to give my forefoot the room it wants while also having a snug fit around my heel. The Racer 2 has the feel of the original Escalante (not the Racer), which I love. It's a bit stiffer than the original Racer, but I like the feel of it. Great for shorter and quicker runs when you're looking to have some snap in your step. I also really enjoy using the Racer as a lifting shoe as it gets me close to a barefoot feel. I will happily keep this shoe in my rotation and would recommend you do so as well!
I was a bit apprehensive initially but I actually really like these and look forward to wearing them. These are super comfortable. I tried on a variety of different styles and brands and like these the best. These may be the most nice feeling pair of shoes I’ve ever purchased. I use them for interval training and some weight training. The tow box is wide enough but not obnoxious. I like the cushioning. I agree that the openness of the material may be problematic on a place like a trail (or in rain) but these aren’t trail running shoes and I don’t exercise in the rain. Watch out for curbs, I scuffed them on my first time out with them in the wild. I do like these a lot.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Didn't really have to "break in" this shoe, but coming off of a knee strain, I was mindful. The walking was FANTASTIC, but the first run in 1 month was OUTSTANDING. It's deeply appreciated when a shoe company doesn't mess too much with a good formula. For me, the tiny bit of added firmness to the sole gave me what I was missing in the first edition.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I use this product for my fast paced runs and it is an absolute dream of a shoe. It is light weight, breathable, and fits like a glove from the moment you put it on. True to size with the perfect amount of cushioning I'd highly recommend!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I wear these shoes for casually running errands, high intensity work outs, running. The shoe fits great for a slightly wider and flat footed person like myself. Wish it had a tab in the back to pull
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I got the Escalante Racer 2nd generation after recovering from a knee strain. It is the perfect zero drop, lightweight, yet sturdy and responsive shoe for me to get back to running. Recommend!
