I bought this pack for big mountain adventure runs and multi-day running adventures. For a 12 hour day of running I could fit everything I needed and more! Plus the pack fit super snug so I could still send it on the downhills. I fit a rain jacket, rain pants, gloves, hat, head lamp, emergency bivy, first aid kit, 1. 5 L bladder, food for 12 hrs, two 0. 5 L flasks of electrolytes in the front pockets, a water filter, my running poles, and an 8oz can of coke in this thing and I was set! There was nothing I didn’t like about it, plus it’s cute! All my running friends have this pack because of how great it is.
I was introduced to Black Diamond from watching a few vlogs created by ultramarathoners. My first piece of BD was a headlight that was used to clean out a crawl space. We hired a junk crew to help and one of the members used my headlight and was amazed at how great it was. I have used it myself for camping and other projects. My next purchase was this distance backpack. I ordered the large and I have to say I really like it. I plan to use it during a race in Arizona coming up in February. I like that it hugs your bag so you don’t have to worry about annoying, loose pieces during a run. Also has good storage for hydrations packets and snacks. Definitely will keep coming back to BD.
This pack is great: super comfortable and has everything you need and no extra bells and whistles. So far I've only used it on day hikes and on a few long trail runs and it holds up nicely. There isn't a whole lot of adjustability, so when I was running the pack moved around a bit. I ordered the smallest size and I am 5'0" and 110 lbs with a small chest. Sometimes I have to pull the chest straps all the way tight, so I wish there was one size smaller. But I think it will work great in the colder seasons when I have more layers. Can't wait to take this up some alpine routes.
I am coming from the Salomon adv skin12 club. I needed something with more space to hold a bit more in the pouch for longer hikes/runs. Although this met that challenge, I wish the front had similar pocket systems as the Salomon - fitting iPhone better, as well as flasks. My flasks begin to fall inside the pockets once I start drinking more of the water. In any case, I am keeping it for its weight & ability to haul more layers. I really like the pole pockets on the sides. Works great for day hikes as well as running down. I tend to keep my phone in my hand with this bag.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first unisex version of the 15L vest. I ordered the Women's Small and there are noticeable improvements. I feel that it runs smaller than the Unisex XS. It feels very solid when not overloaded (i.e. in running vest mode). However, when loaded to towards max capacity I think I'd be slightly happier in a Medium. (5'5', 132lb, 32b/c). Regardless it's a pack I reach for consistently. I like that I can use as both a day pack and a running vest. Ideal for travel when you want to get a run in with hydration
I bought this on a 4-day trek in Patagonia for quick and light out-and-backs. Tons of storage in front pockets for essentials (bars, sunscreen, sunnies, phone) and a section inside for a 2.5L water bladder. There is also a zipper pocket inside for wallet/keys/passport, etc. Trekking poles fit in side pockets. It's super lightweight and can pack down small. I'm 5'3", 140 lbs with a short torso (my 40L pack is XS) and broad shoulders. I ordered a Medium and it fit like a hug. If you have a petite frame, I'd recommend a small.
I purchased the original Distance 15 several years ago. Even though I loved that pack it didn't fit right, I have a very short torso and the pack rubbed the top of my hip bones. The women's pack is amazing, it sits well above my hip bones and has plenty of little pockets for storage. I use this pack mostly for scrambling where I need to have good range of motion in my shoulders. It's perfect.
I bought this pack to go do a multistage race in Nepal called the Manaslu Stage Race. I needed something that could carry a bit more for being in high altitude and also knowing I would be waiting for my overnight bag to show up via the mules. The bag was the perfect size to carry the extra gear I needed to make sure I would be warm enough and all of the emergency gear I needed. I was able to carry a lightweight down jacket, thermals with fleece, emergency gear and spikes/poles. Plus, I loved that the top strap was adjustable so I could expand it if needed. It fit me perfectly and was comfortable to carry with no issues of it rubbing anywhere. My only complaint is the pockets on the vest. They are too small to fit water bottles. Very difficult to get them in and out, which is quite the pain. If they would fix this issue on the Distance Pack and the Beta 30 Fastback I would be recommending them to everyone. I just can't get past the hassle of the water bottles and I tried different sizes.
Love the size and fit of the backpack. It is super light but well made and sturdy. It doesn’t slide around in your back. It’s fit very well. And it’s a nice color! Very excited to continue using it. It’s a great size for easy day hikes where you need water, a snack, and a jacket with you.
recently decided that i was narrowing down the quiver to just two packs- this was my choice for short or long days and i am so happy i chose it . It carrys a substantial amoun of gear in a way that isnt unconfortable and is fialry water repellent. overalll a great choice
