Great Mid-Weight Layer!
I’ve been wearing the Patagonia R1 Fleece Jacket for past two weeks and honestly I’ve hardly taken it off (spring in Denver can be variable). The slim fit is perfect—close enough to hold warmth but still be comfortable and stretchy. It never feels restrictive whether hiking or just running errands around town (it would be a great spring ski layer too). The jacket is super warm for the weight (which is not much!). It’s very light so easy to toss in a pack. The pockets are very well-designed. The hand pockets are low-profile and don’t add bulk, and the big inner pockets are clutch for stashing gloves or a beanie. I haven’t had any issues with rubbing or chafing when wearing a backpack. Overall, the R1 is a super versatile, comfortable midlayer that works for adventures or casual days in town.
Warm cozy jacket
Great lightweight jacket for cool weather. The fabric and jacket is very thin, so the 40’s are the coolest I would wear it in. The zippers and fit are very nice. It kept me pleasantly warm wearing outside working in the yard.
Good, comfortable midlayer
Product is intended to be used as a midlayer. It serves that purpose well enough, and has thinner fabric on the sides of the torso. The polartec fleece grid design inside the jacket does a great job of capturing air to keep you warm, when you and the air around you aren't moving, and the voids between squares to allow it to vent nicely, but that also means that a breeze will sap that heat away. It was not warm enough with just a baselayer in a shady/misty 40 degree morning in Fish Camp, CA. It states that it is a slim fit, but I found the large to be somewhat loose on me (6'2, 200#). The ends of the sleeves are cut and sewn on a different pattern, it looks odd, and the mesh pockets on the stomach feel like they're the heaviest part of the garment. They don't feel like bricks, but it is noticeable when you grab one with your hand. At 12 oz, I wonder how I'd find a place for it in my pack. My down jacket is 13 oz, and in the summer in the Sierra, you don't really need insulation until the sun's down and you're done moving.
Super stretchy soft comfortable lightweight jacket
This is a very lightweight jacket/sweatshirt. It is super comfortable, the fabric is very soft. I have mostly worn a short sleeve underneath it, it feels great against my skin, and the many seams are hardly noticeable. It is extremely stretchy, I have worn it on the bouldering wall while warming up, it moves with my body great, no restrictions at all. On a 40F degree day hiking with a thin wool layer beneath the R1 jacket, I was a warm as I needed to be. It was still air that day, it definitely isn't going to stop any wind. I have worn it constantly around the house early spring while my house was no the chilly side, not constricting at all, it is as if it isn't there, but providing enough warmth. I am 5'10" 150lbs, I went with a small. It is a perfect form fit for me. The arms are the perfect length, which is sometimes tough for a size small for my build. I would not say it is the best looking jacket, the square pattern is odd to me, but I believe it is the key to it's warmth.
High quality and design midlayer jacket
Bottom line up front (BLUF): This jacket is packed full of features and you can tell the design was very thoughtfully done. There is a purpose for every detail of how it was constructed. Top notch fabric and workmanship make this a worthwhile base layer. Design: Polartec fabric power grid fabric is mixed with Patagonia’s capilene thermal weight base layer fabric to offer warmth (chest) and breathability (armpit and sides) in select areas. YKK zippers with a traditional front and then the “invisible” hand and chest pockets. The invisible zipper is a nice touch to give a sleek and minimal look to the jacket. Mesh pockets reduce jacket weight. The inner loop on the collar is a nice touch to hang the jacket by. Flatlock seams create a great feel directly on skin. Bar tacked stitches in high stress areas (pockets). Embroidered “R” for the jacket type is a nice and unique touch. Workmanship/Quality: No raw edges and all seams are straight. No loose thread. Material: A unique blend of two different types of fabric: Polartec for warmth and Capilene for breathability. Extremely lightweight and stretchy but also offering warmth. Made to be a midlayer, it offers a lot of flexibility. Fit: Although specified as slim fit, it’s not as tight as some other slim fit designations may be. It is definitely true to size. I normally wear a L for jackets, but I got a size XL. The sleeves are a perfect length for me (typically a 35/36 for dress shirts) as I have long arms and always run into issues with short sleeves. The length of the body for an XL is way too long though, but may be shorter in a L. It reaches all the way past my crotch. Because the jacket is thin, you can immediately tell that there’s extra fabric for the pockets and it makes the bottom of the jacket a bit odd in terms of thickness.
A great evolution of a great jacket
This is a great first layer jacket! The fabric is warm and resists stinking better than most. This is not my first R1 fleece, but it is the best designed one so far! It moderates temperature very well, and will definitely be a jacket I reach for often. My only real issue is the fit is fairly tight, especially if you have more of a Dad bod like mine. I also wish it had thumb holes, but that’s more of a personal preference than anything else.
Lightweight and warm
Got this jacket a couple of weeks ago and was finally able to put it to use when it got a bit chilly again. It’s a great lightweight jacket that still keeps the warmth inside and feels really great. I have several Patagonia sweaters and jackets and this is definitely a new favorite of mine
How did I not know about this jacket before?
When the package from Patagonia showed up in early April, I was a bit confused. What did I order? After I opened it and saw the jacket, I suddenly remembered I was granted the review opportunity by REI for this jacket in February. Of course, there are more opportunities to test jackets in Southern California in February or March. When this showed up we had daily high temperatures near 90 degrees. Fortunately, in April it is still chilly in the morning no matter how warm the high temperatures will be. Testing opportunities: - wore daily every time I stepped outside in the morning when it was cool. - wore twice on morning birding walks/hikes when it was cool. - wore once while conducting fieldwork (I am a biologist) in the Santa Monica Mountains (where the morning started cold [by SoCal standards] but the day turned hot. - wore once on an extended hike to a property in the Topa Topa Mountains on a chilly and drizzly day. General impressions of the R1 jacket after the above uses: - seems very well-made, as you'd expect from Patagonia. - very light weight. - comfortable fit. - material is very stretchy. - can be worn through a wide range of temperatures. - worked well as a mid-layer under a light rain jacket. Regarding the temperature range, for me as a Southern Californian and not being all that cold-adapted, I found on my morning in the Santa Monica Mountains where it was about 40 degrees on my arrival that I was a little chilly in this jacket wearing it alone over a t-shirt. That got better when I started hiking around a bit, and then I felt completely comfortable by the time it hit 50. I was starting to sweat when it hit about 70 and ended up taking it off. On the hike in the Topa Topa Mountains it was about 60 degrees, damp, and windy. I wore a t-shirt, the R1 jacket, and light hooded rain jacket over that. That day I was completely comfortable throughout. I will definitely continue to use this jacket. In fact, given my real preference for hoodies, I am going to buy the version with a hood.
Effective & Versatile
Received this for review by REI / Patagonia. This is an excellent mid layer / light jacket with great versatility. 1st use hiking in Flagstaff cool 50 degree morning. Maintains warmth well and never overheating with use of full zipper design. Works well over synthetic tee. Zippered kangaro pockets really appreciated and will be used on chilly morning trekking and windy conditions. Added Patagonia Houdini wind jacket and had extremely versatile layering system. Really like chest pocket of I-phone storage and low volume music. Can't wait to really get out and test more with future backpacking trips. Fit is nice with longer tail and sleeves. Always enjoy Patagonia products and design.
It’s Back!
My favorite all-time jacket. I purchased one in green before they discontinued and was hoping they would bring it back one day so I can get more colors. Fit is exactly the same and it’s a lot more airy, which makes it more of an all-season jacket. Hope it holds up!
