Sizing Notes

Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.

Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:

Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.

Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.

Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

IS THIS SHOE TRUE TO SIZE? The product Features above will provide a suggestion if Altra advises you to size up or down in this particular shoe. If no such note exists, please order your regular size.

What has happened to Lone Peaks? I have many pairs of these. The last few years they fall apart pretty quickly. I keep going back to them because they are the only shoe I’ve ever found that fit my feet so well. I just purchased the latest and at one week and maybe 4 wears the stitches are coming out. I think I need to move on and find a better quality shoe. With the coat of these i expect much more.

Comfortable, stable, room to move

I'll start by saying that I am a novice trail runner. That being said, I find these shoes to be a great fit for my needs. They feel very stable on uneven surfaces. There is adequate space in the toe box for movement, and my toes are not smushed together. The shoe is flexible and breathable. I typically range between 8.5 and 9 for sizing, and I went with a 9 for these. They are true to size, which allows me to wear a thicker sock for cold weather runs. The arch support is slightly less than I would usually prefer, but again for someone who usually goes 2-3 miles on a run, it is not uncomfortable for me.

First Zero-Drop Shoe and I’m Not Mad

The Altra Lone Peak are my first pair of zero-drop running shoes. I have worn these shoes on three occasions so far. (1) new out of the box I wore them around the house just to make sure they are the right size/fit and are generally comfortable.— and yes, they were very comfortable for everyday wear, more so than my regular more traditional running shoes would be. The wide toe box seemed to be the key here as I had ultimate room for moving my toes, and I noticed my feet did not sweat like they normally would when my toes are more constricted. These also feel very stable. (2) On a light jog on a packed-snow covered trail at about 8 degrees F — The grip/tread on these shoes was great, I didn’t feel like I even needed to wear my removable studs. I understand these are not arctic-level warmth but temperature aside these did well in the packed snow. (3) A more vigorous 4 mi run on a snow covered trail at 15 degrees F— at a faster pace and more incline I did choose to wear my removable studs with these shoes. About 2 miles in I started to feel more aching in my feet/ankles/heels than I normally would with my regular high-cushion running shoes, but I assume this is something I will get used to over time with zero-drop shoes. The forefoot, however, felt very padded and comfortable the entire time, with the wide toe box AGAIN being the best part of these shoes. Overall, these did not require any level of breaking in, they fit perfectly and the size seems spot on with other brands of running shoes. I noticed the small Velcro strap at the back for attaching gaiters, which is a nice feature, but I have not used that part yet. The Navy color is a fun bright navy, very clearly blue and as featured in the marketing photos. I’m very happy with these shoes and will plan to write another review in the spring when I can wear these on a dirt trail without snow.

Second pair of Altra trail shoes

I purchased the Altra lone peak hiker 2 last year and they have been my go to hiking shoe ever since. My only issue with them is they are very hard to put on, so I was so excited when I saw these! I pre-ordered immediately. Pros: - Lightweight - Easy to put on - Comfortable - Wide width and wide toe box makes my toes happy - Material seems durable Cons - limited color options for wide width. I have only worn them a half dozen times so I will update this review once I put more miles on them.

Put your best foot forward

I received the Altra Women's Lone Peak 9 shoes for review, and despite the cold damp weather opted to take them for a test drive out on the muddy trails on day one. There is a two tone grey coloration with turquoise accents, which is a nice combo. The strings are flat, rather than round, but grip well and stay tied, which always ranks high for trail running purposes. The balance on these is different than most. At a standstill much of your weight is directed back to the heels with a wide frontal toe box. The magic comes with you take action. Feet naturally flow into an anatomic foot fall position, and the wide toe box prevents pressure points on the toes, while accommodating for the natural swelling of an extended run. Great grip to the soles in wet terrain, and I was able to stay stable even on angles that would typically cause some slippage. As with most products that are used in nature, the white padding doesn't stay white for long, but they do wipe clean easily.

Super solid trail running shoes

I tested these shoes on several 2-5 mile runs, all a little wet (thanks PNW winter!) My typical route is about 1/2 mile on the road before I hit the trails within a maintained city park, so the trails are a mix of mud, gravel and dirt, slippery asphalt, and stairs. These shoes are pleasantly grippy throughout that mix of terrain! I took it slow the first few times but by my most recent run, I felt like I could really feel the ground underneath and trust the shoes. My previous trail runners were the Brooks Catamounts (not the most recent version) and Nike Pegasus but neither felt that great for my feet in the long run and I ended up retiring them to wear during 3-8 mile hikes instead. For road running, I've worn and enjoyed Brooks Ghost 15s and currently in the Asics Novablast 4 - all in size 6.5. I took a 6 in these Altras and they fit fine - maybe even slightly loose-feeling - likely because of the wide toebox. I was concerned about the low ankle since I've rolled my ankle in the past and am susceptible, but surprisingly, I still feel fairly secure in these. They don't feel supportive, but they don't feel too flimsy either. All in all, I like these trail runners and am happy to have these in my rotation for trail running even though I'll probably still search for a pair that I love even more!

Amazing traction in snow/roomy toe box

I really love these shoes. I have used an older pair of lone peaks and the updated version has been thought out and upgraded. The soles have an incredible amount of traction while making it easy to run up and down a trail-particularly on snow and gravel. The heel has been upgraded and grips better than older versions. The toe box is roomy and creates space so my toes have room to spread out and pull as I run uphill, then room to spread out to create a wider foot base as I run down hill. I felt stable on uneven terrain and in snow. I sized up slightly to have more space when running (allow for swelling) I didn’t get any blisters even when my shoes got wet. The one thing I still have a complaint with this shoe line but is a trade off is that on wet rocks sometimes the shoe is slippery and less stable. The shoe performed really well on snow/ice/gravel/dirt but I can feel when the lugs get worn down there might be an issue with traction on wet rocks. Positive notes overview -great toe box -no blisters even while wet or with long distance -appreciate color option didn’t change even with dirt/wet -great traction and lugs that made pulling the mountain easy, made running down feel stable and in better control Negative -sole slips while on wet rocks, just be prepared and aware -shoe laces came untied a couple more times than I would have like for the distance

Great overall shoe for walking/running/hiking

Great shoes from the first run right out of the box. I ran a 6 mile trail run and the shoes were comfortable and the tread offered good grip on the wet trail. The wide toe box is great for those with wider feet. I don’t have wide feet, but I like having the extra room in the toe box. I find the zero drop design comfortable for running/walking/hiking. I’ve even worn these shoes for cross fit/hit work outs. An overall good shoe for working out.

Comfortable, cute and cuts the terrain.

I have been looking for a trail shoe that is comfortable and will hug the terrain. This shoe did just that! I ran 5 miles in them without any break in period and didn't have any issues. The trail was a bit wet from it snowing when I ran. The trail itself isn't the most technical but did have leaves, roots, rocks and lots of acorns, and the shoe handled well over it all. I also really like the look of the shoe and color.

Comfortable But Toebox Too Wide For Narrow Feet

I really liked these trail runners as soon as I put them on. But a couple things prevent them from being 5 stars for me. Pros: lightweight, springy and comfortable step, great traction. I did some hikes and runs in temperatures hovering right around freezing with some light snow on the trails. My feet stayed dry and warm, and on flat portions of the trail, I found them really comfortable. Even with some ice and loose gravel in spots, I never slipped or lost my footing, which was really something I look for. Cons: toebox maybe a little too wide for my narrow feet and there was a little seam across the shoe about midfoot when I flexed my foot. It was noticeable and a little uncomfortable when wearing thinner socks. I have fairly narrow feet and when going downhill, my foot would slide into the front of the toebox so they felt a little large. I possibly could size down a half size in the future but found I could wear a thick pair of socks and it helped quite a bit. Something to consider if you have narrow feet. There was kind of a line or seam I could feel across the top of my mid-foot when it flexed. This felt better as I got used to it, and also was nearly unnoticeable when I wore thicker socks. Overall, super comfortable shoes with great traction and I honestly loved the roomy toebox, maybe just would have sized down if I realized the bigger toebox would make a difference on hikes and runs with downhill segments.

Great concept

Shoes seem to run a tad small - I went up half a size to get a proper fit. They also seem to run a little wide in the heel and arch area. I like the concept of the wider toe box and thought it would be great for running but after several runs, it's not for me. It causes my foot to slide side to side too much and affected my stride. I do like it for just day to day wear though. The agressive sole was great on the icy conditions I ran in and gripped very well without cleats on the scattered terrain. With the wide toe box, shoes look huge on my feet but are the same as other shoes in reality. Overall, I liked the shoe and will wear them frequently for walking, hiking, etc. but will not use them for running so giving 4 stars.
