Tent of Thoughtful Compromises

We spent 30 nights in our Aurora 4 Person High Rise this summer in Cape Cod, NH, Newfoundland and then through the midwest. It's lovely and spacious for two adults, and on one night stops comfortably fit our teen aged daughters too. After reading lots of reviews, I bought the Nemo to replace our beloved 20 year old tent. I quickly realized that there was no 'perfect' tent out there. We valued staying dry in torrential rain and having good ventilation and views on warm nights. The Nemo does both really well. As some have noted, the tent feels light. But after 30 nights the zippers are all just fine and the poles are just fine too. The fly is a bit finicky, but if you take your time placing it before attaching it to the tent there are no pooling issues. Yes, the poles are long, and set up is quicker with two people. But one person can set it up just fine. And it's lovely when you are inside! The storage pockets are functional and the hang tabs are also useful. We experienced a lot of rain this summer, and we stayed dry. On warm nights, we appreciated the air flow and views through the ample screens.

Disappointed

We purchased this tent excited to have a tent that could be stood up in (my husband is 6' tall), looks great and has enough space for a full mattress, clothes, shoes and room to change. We have used the tent about 20 nights now. On use 8 or 9, the zipper fell off the teeth. Luckily, it was repairable by back-zipping and pinching the slider with a pair of pliers. A different zipper (now on the smaller door) fell off the teeth on use 11. Overall, the zippers are cheap for the tent. The fabric of the tent feels thinner than expected as well. The steaks should be replaced immediately. They are hard to get in the ground and bend if you sneeze on them. My biggest gripe is the lack of wind rating and stability. If there is more than 10mph of wind, the tent walls will come in to greet you. Two poles have been bent and are now difficult to get together. We have camped in 30mph+ gusts. One day, we left the tent set up with all 8 stakes in (4 in the tent, 4 in the rain-fly) and the tent decided to try to run away. It was ripped out of the ground (full of the mattress, clothes bag, shoes) and rolled 30ft away. It was caught by a juniper, otherwise, the tent would have been lost. I love the views through the mesh, the numerous pockets, and ease of setup. I was super excited about this tent after the first few uses, but I have been increasingly disappointed with every trip. If you are a very fair weather camper that wants space for a family or lots of gear, this tent is for you. But, if you camp in various weather conditions and locations, get something tougher.

If you need a 4P tent, then this is a good option

I’ve never set up a 4P before because I primarily use a 2+ when I car camp. The first time I set this tent up by myself, it took quite awhile since it’s pretty big! After a few more times, it was relatively quick to set up. If you have someone else with you, it’ll make it really quick! This tent is incredibly spacious and would be perfect for a couple and their dog. I like how there’s two side windows, and plenty of mesh on the doors to help with airflow. The vestibules offer plenty of space to store backpacks, or wet gear. I am baffled that NEMO thought it’d be brilliant to use white for the floor of the tent. A footprint was not included for my testing, so if you do purchase this tent, you will need to get one or use a tarp because as you can see in my last photo, it gets dirty fast! REI sent this tent to me to test out and review.

Great design and handles any weather

My wife and I wanted to try a new car camping tent and thought the new NEMO Aurora Highrise 4P would be a good candidate to try out. The weight of the tent limits it to car camping, at a packed weight of 15 lbs., you will not be hiking with this tent. We were excited to have a brightly colored tent instead of the old, muted drab colors that are on the market. This tent did not disappoint in the aesthetic department. The bright blue tent, with yellow-green highlights really pops at the campground. The floor pattern and colors are great as well. NEMO has made setting up the tent a breeze. There are two main aluminum poles that slide into sleeves on the tent, pushing the poles up pops the tent and the ends of the poles go into tabs. Two more poles are used to hold out the front and back of the tent. Adding the rainfly is easy with the color-coded straps. The front and rear vestibules are tall, but do not extend out far enough in my opinion. If the vestibules were a little deeper, you could fit a duffel bag in the vestibule and still get in and out easy. We did use the included guy lines because of the weather. Tent set up with rain fly takes less than 10 minutes. Ventilation in a tent of this size is very important. There are two large windows on each side of the tent, covered by fabric and close with peg and loop closures, instead of the typical zippers. Our first trip with the tent was met with sun, light rain, 20 mph sustained wind gusts, and a heavy downpour during the night. The tent handled it all with ease, leaving us dry each morning. We purchased the footprint separately from the tent and were thankful to have the extra protection it afforded with the weather. The interior height of the tent is impressive. The open roominess and the color of the floor really make staying in the tent enjoyable. I am 5’8” and had no problems moving around inside the 6’ tall tent. The tent is spacious enough for 2 or 3 people (with sleeping bags and belongings) but it would still be comfortable with up to 4 people. The front door can be unzipped and stuffed into a pocket on the bottom, keeping it out of the way. Storage pockets are excellent throughout the tent. One large center pocket on the interior of the roof holds a small lantern for playing cards or a night light. There are large interior head height pockets for storage. There are also two pockets on the back side of the tent within reach at night for your wallet, keys, lights, and anything else you might need. Overall, this is a great tent, and I would recommend it. The exterior color of the tent, the colorful floor pattern, the interior volume and height, ventilation, and NEMO’s lifetime warranty all add up to an excellent tent.

Taller Than it Looks

Just spent a week at a friend's property in the southern Sierra and set up the Aurora Highrise 4 to use and evaluate. Set up was easier than expected for a big tent. It was breezy so I staked the four corners (don't stake it stretched out tight). The two main cross poles slid right thru the sleeves and the tent was easy to raise by myself. Clip in the main poles, add the smaller poles across the top and voila. The tent corner straps (stake down loops) and rain fly clip straps are colour coded for easy orientation which was really helpful with such a big fly cover. Clip the fly corners in, snug the straps, stake out the vestibules, and that's it. I took my time being the first time I set it up, about thirty minutes. As mentioned above, it was breezy with swirling gusts thru the piñon pines and around the structures 15-20 mph, but I didn't need to add the guy lines to the tie down points on the fly for extra support, but nice to know they're there. There are also hook and loop attachments on the back side of the fly (where the guy line loops are) to attach to the poles for extra strength. First thing I noticed setting up the inside is it's super roomy. The two extra poles really open up the tent. At 5'10" I was able to comfortably stand all around the tent. I used a full size military style cot and it easily fit along the side, but I put it along the back. Two cots would easily fit on the sides with a table or whatever in between, or large mattresses and such. Easily a friendly four person tent using regular camp pads. I liked the big fully opening front door for setting up and take down. Then nice to use as half doors. The storage pocket at the centre bottom when fully open keeps the door out of the way and out of the dirt. The back door is half size and will be nice with friends along. The back of the fly also only has a half door when staked out, but can be rolled fastened back. The front vestibule of the fly has more options. Fully rolled back and to the side, staked out with the sides open etc... The centre can also be set up as an awning if one has poles, guy lines and extra stakes. A nice addition if rainy. There are four nice storage pockets up high, which I found handy for glasses etc... And the light pocket, but I hung a lantern on a little loop strap. The zippers for the doors seem a bit small, but I had no problems with them so long as I pulled them together a little around the corners. Not a deal breaker, but I recommend keeping them clean on any tent. The Highrise comes with a nice matching storage bag, decent stakes, and a set of guy lines for breezy conditions. The two main tent poles are substantial at 13mm. The materials and construction seem top notch. So overall this is a well thought out high quality three season camping tent. Easy set up, reasonable structural stability, excellent breathability with all the mesh etc, roomy, and super fun to hang out in with friends (I did have friends come up ,"Check out the tent".). Did I mention the floor pattern? I didn't like the blue colour either at first, but that and the floor really worked for me after a couple days...

THE BEST!

This tent is worth every penny! After many many soaking wet nights my husband & I decided to finally upgrade our 20+ year old tent… we read many many reviews and knew we needed something that could withstand adverse weather… as we seem to find ourselves in it all too often. We purchased this tent before heading off to southern Colorado where we expected some rain but ended up getting stuck in our tent with torrential downpour every single day of our week long trip. We were bone dry even when the rain fly was SOAKED! Not a single drop on us and the walls without the vestibules stayed completely dry, we used a tarp underneath the tent as the footprint and even as water seeped underneath the floor was still dry. The vestibules were so helpful to store hiking boots & packs and other items we didn’t want to get wet, they were even large enough to store firewood & large plastic totes. Honestly I can’t recommend this tent enough, it was truly the best upgrade we’ve made to our camping gear!

3 person luxury, 4 person with minimal gear.

It can easily fit 4 people with light gear or 3 people with luxury pads like the Nemo Roamer. Tons of mesh, with great ventilation. It’s a simple setup for such a large tent. 2 long cross poles, 2 short door poles. All 4 poles have to be routed through fabric sleeves. I thought we all decided that pole sleeves are annoying and clips are faster and easier. It’s a small gripe of mine, but not a deal breaker because it’s designed well, and doesn’t affect setup time. I’m 5’7” and can stand directly in the middle without hitting the ceiling. The ceiling does slope down a bit along the sides, but there’s enough room for 2 people to stand and gear up for the day. I’m a big fan of small touches that aren’t necessary but make a difference for me. Firstly, the floor pattern. Fun aesthetics aren’t too common in tents, so I love that Nemo decided to put a cool pattern on the floor. It brings up the cozy factor. Next, the door storage pouch is also a small thing that works very well. When setting up and breaking down the entire door can be shoved in a little pouch to keep it out of the way. Nice. Lastly, the side windows are zipperless. They’re kept closed by little plastic tabs. It’s quicker and simpler than a full zip window . As a bonus, this tent passed my sloppy pack-up test. I gave the tent a quick fold, shoved everything in the storage bag and it zipped up without issue.

Perfect for family of 4

Perfect fit for 4 wide mattresses, very airy and tall walls. As a longtime user of a Mountain Hardware Viperine 3, I would of much preferred 1 large vestibule versus 2 smaller vestibules, especially with my dog and large gear bags. Love the indoor nightlight. The quality of the seams doesn't seem to be as high as a 4 season higher end tent, but I'm hoping it last at least 15 uses being abused.

Received a used tent!

I wish I could review the tent, but the one I received was very used and very filthy and was not the new item I paid full price for. It appears to be well made, but after seeing trash inside, including used tissue, and what appeared to be mold, we didn't even try to sleep in it.

Began falling apart upon setting it up...

The tent I purchased may be an outlier, but the snap to the center clip completely broke apart after I finished setting this up for the first time. This is the seventh Nemo tent I've purchased, and interestingly ALL of them have had some kind of defect in materials or workmanship. It's really too bad because I think Nemo makes such innovative stuff that also looks really awesome. Given the price, I'm going to return this. My low rating is based off this single factor, and I never treated this in the field. However, I can speak to some other things. The tent is huge for a four person tent. It appears very breathable, and I could easily set it up by myself. The zippers operate pretty smoothly, but it did stiffen up zipping it around one of the curved areas of the very large door. The stuff sack for the poles should probably be about 1/4 size bigger than it already is to make putting the poles away easier. This could be a great tent for someone... I wish it would have worked for need. Some might say it isn't a big deal having this piece break, but a tent at this price point just shouldn't do that.

High rise luxury of tents

This tent definitely feels like luxury. I love how tall it is, so you can stand up inside the tent. I love the style and colors of this tent too. It definitely took 2 people to set up due to the size. Sleeping inside, I actually did feel like I was inside of a high rise condo with high ceilings. A few bummers about this tent - it’s heavy and bulky. Definitely a car camping luxury. If space and weight aren’t a problem for you, this tent will work. I also wish the front doors had a solid covering and not just mesh. The rain fly is needed to fully close off. I also didn’t like how the windows in the interior are button flap closures instead of a zipper… just less convenient.
