Used to love Salomon Quest 4/4D GTX and have been my go-to boots for over a decade. But my 2nd pair (new generation) only took 2 hiking trips (less than 100 miles total) before became unglued around the toe boxes, and water was leaking inside from the gaps, which completely defeated the Gore-Tex feature of the boots. Still love how steady they are on rugged terrains and very good grip on both wet and dry surfaces. Wider toe boxes have saved me from blisters too. Really wish to stay with this model but with the decreased quality I may have to look for a different brand and model. Considering I typically go on extended backpacking trips once a year, my 2nd pair has gone out of manufacturer warranty after just 2 trips. May just have to glue them back myself and hope they'll last me another year.
These came highly recommended, I did a fair amount of research and was pleased with my conclusion. They began getting wet, I couldn’t understand how. I wasn’t covering the lower in water, but walking in less than the depth of the sole (surface water). The soles are splitting, the boots look fantastic and would have really enjoyed them if the soles would’ve held up.
Love these boots so much I normally wear a wider boot/shoe and man these have a really roomy toe box area.(Really important for me) Went on a hike yesterday for 12 miles and man these boots felt great. These and the Zamberlan Vioz are both great. But I like these a little more then my Vioz GTX since they feel wider HOWEVER. I will say that you do need to replace the insole in these and the Vioz GTX both need a proper insole. The insoles they come with are so thin and will hurt the bottom of your feet. But once you replace that it will be a game changer. 9/10 for me on these boots so far. Would buy again. However I have heard there is some quality issues with these but I will see for myself and update the review if anything major happens. But so far 9/10 wish it came with a proper insole for the price or even a discount towards new insoles.
Initially fantastic boots. Have owned 4 different pairs and put hundreds of tough mountain miles on each. No break in required - fit like a glove out of the box. After 6 months of use however, the toe box seams start failing and the "waterproof" boot is barely water resistant. Not sure the cost is worth the disintegration after 6 months of use.
I have two pairs. I'm 65 and take camera gear in large camera bag on my back. With a tripod. The ankle support of these boots is great. They are sturdy, well made, and keep my ankles safe. They have great grip. I've hiked Arches, Zion, Bryce, Yellowstone, and smaller hikes with the same two pairs of shoes.
These are the best hiking boots I've ever owned. I'm getting ready to order my seventh pair. I regularly get 500 miles of rugged hiking with these boots. One day I stood in snow for three hours and my feet stayed dry. They are also great for climbing on rocks — excellent traction. I've had a couple minor problems. The pair that I'm getting ready to retire have 530 miles on them. The tread is worn and the support in the sole is breaking down. I'm also super pleased that the laces last as long as the boots. With past hiking boots, I always had to replace the laces. I hike about 100 miles a month on average. I also regularly trail run in these for short distances — I don't recommend them for trail runners.
Like so many other’s experience here, the sole on one of the boots began to just fall apart, like in chunks. The other boot is surprisingly holding up just fine. Some quality control must’ve slipped through the cracks when making left side boots. It’s a shame because it happened surprisingly soon and the boots would other wise have plenty of mileage left on them. They fit and worked well besides this one glaring defect. I was hoping for better, especially for the price they ask.
I have had about 4 pairs of Salomon Quest shoes over the years. First pair (3s) lasted me for years, second pair, also threes, the same. After that I moved to these fours, had one pair last me about a year before the soles started breaking apart, and the last and final pair lasted me 1 80 mile hike before they came apart. I think the quality of the sole rubber has gone down, and won't be buying any more of these. Very comfy however.
Bought these to provide ankle support since I suffered an ankle injury. They have great room in the toe box. I have pretty wide feet and they feel true to size. May need to size down if your foot is on the narrow side. They provide great support. Maybe a little too much at times. They are pretty stiff so if you don’t want/need extreme support they may not be for you!
Finding a good pair of boots is always nice. Finding a great pair of boots can lead to enlightenment. In an effort to replace an old pair of Salomon boots, I’ve tried two other builders to no avail - both had to be returned. They just didn’t make the cut. Was a bit on edge by the time I decided to hit the go switch on these new Quest models - especially in light of the fact I couldn’t try them on before buying. Not a fan of buying footwear online but hey - these FIT THE BILL. I’d score the materials above average. Sole is stiff but not so that you feel like you’ve got slats strapped on. I use custom footbeds and they fit without issue. Even the darn laces stay cinched. Using them on all manner of surfaces, in all manner of weather. Bone dry and cozy - Highly recommend them.
