Good for casual day hikes, but maybe not running

The Rim Runner X22 is a nice pack for casual day hikes, cross country skiing, and bicycling, with versatility that would not look out of place for urban use. This pack does not appear to be well suited as a trail runner’s pack, but it is light weight. Although listed as 22L, the pack is limited in its volume/capacity. For example, a shoe box could not be fit into the top-loading main compartment, and this attempt was without a filled hydration bladder. It is comfortable under a tested 15-pound load. One would be hard pressed to stuff this pack with more than 15 pounds of normally carried day-hike items such as two additional 2L bottles, a sweater or rain coat, hat, gloves, small first aid kit and lunch/snacks. The 1.5 bladder itself is small compared to other reservoirs, but it appears as if a 3L reservoir could fit. The included 1.5L Rim Runner X22 bladder has a nifty, ergonomic, plastic handle to hold the bladder when filling. The attachment for holding the bladder vertically inside the pack is simple and easy to use. If using other brands of reservoirs, the attachment loop may not be compatible, but nothing a small carabiner could not solve. The water reservoir is stashed in its separate compartment closest to the users back, allowing for quicker removal and return after filling. The left shoulder strap has a thin mesh pocket that Rim Runner X22 labels as a “Command Center Harness,” but the only thing it could command is a large granola bar or two packs of gummy energy chews. A cell phone, a pair of folded sunglasses or a can of bear spray will not fit in this pocket. The opening for the pocket is closed by an external cord and plastic cord lock. This cord is mounted to the cuff of the pocket and the edge of the shoulder strap. It seems like it would get in the way and would require two hands to open/close. The size of this pocket leaves a lot to be desired. Not having quick access to a pouch for glasses, cell phone/camera or bear spray is a serious shortcoming. The back panel is a thin, somewhat flexible waffle foam with angled vents up the middle of the back. This back panel is covered with a durable mesh that is not attached to the foam; however, there is no separation/gap between this mesh and the foam whether the pack is full or not. There are no lumbar supports/pads and the foam pad stays pretty much flat when worn. At the top of the pack is a ‘beefy’, durable, thick fabric handle sewn at the seam of the back panel. It is out of the way and does not flop around. The X22 in this review was did not have pockets on the removable hip belt. Other advertisements have images showing zippered hip belt pockets, so perhaps there are different models, but aftermarket hip belt pockets could easily be used with this pack. It’s a nice pack, comfortable and versatile, but not having a larger mesh shoulder pocket that can accommodate a pair of glasses/cell phone/camera/bear spray may dissuade others form fully enjoying it.

Well built versatile and comfortable

I received the CamelBak Rim Runner 22 as an advisor for the Trailblazer program. I was able to take it out for a day hike recently, and I’ve got to say, it was pretty impressive. First things first—this pack is comfortable. It fits well, staying close to the back without any weird bulging or shifting, which is exactly what you want when moving a lot. I’m also a big guy, and it still fit nicely. The hydration system is straightforward and super user-friendly. Filling it up is quick and hassle-free, and drinking from it while walking is just as easy—no need to stop or slow down, which keeps the pace of the hike enjoyable. What I really like about this pack is the amount of space it offers. There’s plenty of room for all the essentials and then some. Plus, the overall look is sleek, and the craftsmanship appears top-notch, suggesting it’s built to last. Another big plus is the ease of removing the reservoir—not only does this make the backpack versatile for other uses, but it also simplifies cleaning, which is a huge benefit. In my experience, if you don’t clean or air it out, it can become moldy. Overall, the CamelBak Rim Runner 22 ticks all the boxes for a solid hiking hydration pack—comfort, ease of use, and versatility. Definitely a thumbs up from me!

Awesome Storage Capacity

I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. Since receiving the hydration pack, I have used it for about 20 hours on trail runs and another 20 hours inline skating. I have been active for 20 years running ultras and doing long distance inline skating, and I am very accustomed to carrying packs of varying sizes for over a few hours to over multi-day events, but I have always avoided hydration packs after some pretty bad experiences early on. First, I love the 20.5 L cargo capacity. On my trail runs, especially when I head into the mountains and remote forest areas, I always pack a rain jacket, some extra clothing, snacks, a one liter water bottle, water treatment device, and even some sandals. This certainly holds it all very comfortably. I try to always keep my pack weight below 10 pounds. The 1.5 L reservoir is around 3 pounds full, so that leaves me room for up to 7 pounds pounds of food and gear depending on how long I will be out. For inline skating, I have a little less gear since I am generally on paved bike trails, so I am able to easily carry size US 13 men's shoes in case I need to hoof it back to the car or stroll off the trail in unpaved areas. There are two stretchy side pockets that can hold larger water bottles for me, giving me capacity for an additional 2 L of water, but that essentially reaches my pack weight limit I am comfortable with. On my one longer trail run (about 10 hours), I carried an empty liter bottle that I refilled in a stream and treated, then refilled the reservoir easily in this scenario. I am very happy with the storage and the overall fit of the pack was good. The straps and padding were average and easy to adjust, which is similar to other packs that I have used. The pack boasts ventilation with their Air Support design, but I don't think it's a "one-size fits all" approach to personal individual issues - ambient air temperature, humidity, and sweating! Aside from not wearing at pack at all, this is one area that I didn't feel much of a difference in comparison to my experience with other packs - I was still warmer and sweating. The sweat-soaked parts of the pack did dry out fairly quickly after use. Lastly, the hydration part of the pack worked nicely. Easy to use, no leaks and the reservoir was easy to open and refill even when I was tired after being out for a long time. This is purely my issue, but I don't maintain my gear very well, and these reservoirs, tubes, and bite valves need serious cleaning after each use. Think of me as lazy, but I am just busy and unmotivated to hand clean things that cannot go in the dishwasher or washing machine. While I will likely not use the reservoir again, it's a "hydration" pack that has great carrying capacity for 2 - 3 liters of water bottles if preferred. The pack felt great running and also felt great inline skating. I would say it's probably a bit larger than necessary for inline skating, but I do more long trail running (day and multi-day) so it's really ideal for me.

Missed Opportunity

I have had an off/on relationship with Camelbak over the years–sometimes they get it right; sometimes they miss the mark. Unfortunately, the Rim Runner X22 missed the mark for me. I received the opportunity to test the new 2024 Rim Runner X22 and went ahead to give it a shot, as I have not used a Camelbak pack in a number of years and wanted to see how they compared to other brands that I had migrated to. Construction-wise, it is well made. The materials are light but robust and appear that they will hold up well, and I applaud them for using recycled materials. Everything is stitched well and looks to be made to hold up well over time. Conceptually, it ticks all the right boxes for a daypack: 22 liter volume, low profile, hydration ready, light, internal frame for better support, airy back panel and shoulder straps, front stretch panel, deep side pockets, daisy chains, pole attachments, and internal and external zippered pockets. Unfortunately, for all of the great individual features, in aggregate the experience was fair. I found the 22 liter volume to be mostly taken up by the reservoir, not leaving adequate room to carry essentials. I’m not sure if Camelbak is claiming the whole bag is 22 liters, or if the main pocket is supposed to be 22 liters (until you put a reservoir in it). It likely does not help that the sleek, close to center profile (which is not bad when carrying a load, certainly) prevents the bag from opening to free more space. Regardless, I felt a little too constrained, unless I switched to using waterbottles, which is ultimately what I ended up doing. I do appreciate the deep side pockets that help to hold taller bottles in place. And the mesh front panel is great for quick access and to quick stow jackets, hats, gloves… However, I struggled in getting the pack to fit well and ride comfortably. I am not certain what the designers were thinking, but the back panel is far too long (21 inches) for an average, one size fits most pack. I have a 19 inch torso (kind of right in the middle of what I expect they were aiming for), and when riding correctly on my shoulders, the lower edge of the internal frame was digging into lumbar spine. If I shifted the bag higher on my back to get it off my lower back, then the yoke became too tight around my neck and shoulders. They should have made a shorter back panel or allowed for the back panel length to be adjusted. Additionally, the shoulder straps are insufficiently padded to carry any real weight. I appreciate the lighter materials and breathability, but more than a thin sheet of padding would go a long way to improve comfort. There was a small utility pocket on the left shoulder strap that was too small to be of any real use. You could maybe get a small gel pack or utility knife there, but certainly not a phone or gps device. Ultimately, I never could get a comfortable carry. I wanted to like this bag, but it just did not come together well enough for me to make for a good experience. I believe it could be a great bag for the right person, it just wasn’t me. If you find the fit is right for you, it may very well become your go to, but I’m going to keep looking.

Very Good Little Daypack for Light Hikes

I received this backp.ack for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. I've taken it out in the mountains a couple of times and used it as a carryon on a couple of flights as well. It is a light, small daypack. With the water bladder inside it comfortably held a layer change, first aid kit, sunglasses, snacks, and bear spray. The back pad is very comfortable and I suspect it will be very airy in hot summer conditions. (I was hiking in the mountains in spring.) Under light loading the shoulder straps and waist belt were comfortable, but they are not padded so it's best not to overload the pack. The water bladder is very easy to take out, fill, put back into the pack and thread out to a convenient catch point on the shoulder strap. The water bladder goes to the right shoulder strap only. The left shoulder strap has a dedicated pocket that comfortably carries your bear spray, or perhaps a cell phone. A nice feature of the waist belt is that it is removable. I found this to be very handy when using the daypack as an airplane carryon. While I didn't get the chance to hike with it in a rainstorm, I did have one day of constant spring snow. The daypack shed the snow and remained dry inside. It's significantly lighter than my old 22L daypack and, because of the back pad, I'll be using this pack on my upcoming day hikes in a tropical rain forrest.

Great Day Pack

This day pack is well constructed, and seems like it would stand up to repeated use on the trail. I used it for a short day hike, the air support system against my back helped to keep me cool and not sweaty. The command center pocket on the shoulder strap expands to fit a small water bottle or phone keeping things at hand. It easily fits everything you need for a day long trip!

Great Design in a Comfortable Hydration/Daypack!

The RimRunner serves as an excellent well fitted daypack, complete with a hydration reservoir. It has enough space for a lunch/snacks, rain gear or light jacket and other day hiking essentials. Items are easily accessed with dependable zipper closures, which worked fine for me. I also really liked the easily detachable hip belt! It stores easily, so if desired, can be added back in a blink. The hip belt would be good for trail runners no doubt. This removable design is a great idea, as well as, the deep elastic side pockets for security of miscellaneous items or an extra bottle of water. The extra bottle serves well should one need to filter additional water etc., so providing for secure carry pockets is awesome. The biggest negative for me was the shoulder straps didn’t have a phone pocket. This would be nice to have and preclude having to stash your phone somewhere else, or purchase one to add to the pack. All in all, good design, quality and durability. This pack would be great for a summer 14er foray or other day hikes. I recommend it.

Disappointing

Was looking for a pack with a hydration pack at short notice. I picked this one because it looked good, was about the size I wanted, and honestly because of the brand name. However once I got it out on the trail it was a bit disappointing: - Considering the size of the pack, the water container was very small. I didn't think to check in the store (downside of buying at short notice) but expected something roughly the length of the pack and not so small. - It is not possible to open the pack very wide because the top zipper does not extend to the full width of the pack. So it was a real struggle to get larger items in, although they fit fine once squeezed through the narrow aperture - The zippers are very small and do not feel durable. Particularly the main top zipper felt like it would not stand up to much abuse on the trail. On the plus side it was very comfortable to wear, and light.
