TALL: tall sizes are 3 inches longer in inseam, 2 inches longer in body length, 2.5 inches longer in sleeve length and 1.25 inches longer in total rise.

Kept me warm while visiting the coast redwoods!
This jacket was a life saver. I am from Florida so any time I experience weather below 70 degrees Fahrenheit I get so cold. I took this jacket on a trip to California and Oregon to hike trails and be amongst the ancient redwood trees. The weather was in the high 40s and low 50s and this jacket really kept me warm. At some points I even got a little too warm in it so it would also do well in cooler temperatures. I'm in between a small and medium size typically so I got a medium and it fit great. The zipper works well and doesn't get caught on the fabric. It also features buttons that can be used as an alternative. They snap well. The hand pockets are spacious enough to get your wrists in too and keep the hands warm while also holding larger sized phones. I was pleasantly surprised that there is a hidden zipper pocket on the left interior, which came in handy to hold my ID and cards. The hood is nice and keeps the heat from escaping your head pretty well. My only aesthetic wish is that the jacket were a more sandy brown rather than a traditional dark brown. I'll also note that although this jacket is a bit puffy, it can be folded down to fit in a personal item sized backpack at the airport. I did this on three flights and was able to fit the pack under the seat each time. My final note is this jacket isn't very water resistant. It sprinkled a bit on my hiking days and the jacket seemed to absorb rather than repel the rain..something to keep in mind. Overall, I love it and this will be my go to jacket for all the cold days coming up!
Great warmth, poor craftsmanship
I wanted to love this coat so much. I scoured the internet and various physical stores to find the right puffer. Right length, right weight, right color. This one nailed those requirements for me (I bought it in Raisin color, which is a nice deep shade of purple-y burgundy). It's great for taking the dogs out on walks (good deep pockets, which I'll come back to), the hood is warm and not too small that it doesn't fit over a hat, but not so big you can't see what's happening around you when wearing it. I'm 5' 2" in and the small is the perfect length to keep my quads warm but not make me feel like I have to waddle in it. The lower side zippers are great to expand it has needed. I'm giving this parka 3 stars because for the amount of money it costs it should last more than a season. However, one of those deep pockets had a hole forming in the bottom corner seam of it after about 1 month of near-daily wear. And now, the lining on the inside of the coat where that pocket hole hits, is completely ripped open. I expected more from an REI product. So, here I am disappointed and needing to return to my research for a Parka that actually does it all, most importantly, holds itself together.
Good light parka
I live in Wisconsin and spent a lot of time outdoors. I run cold, so I'd like to think I have a pretty good appreciation for what a warm coat is. This parka is perfect for temps 20-50s. I'm 5'8, 34" bust, and the small gives me room to wear a hoodie underneath and still have good movement. At the same time it doesn't puff out and look huge. I have a warmer parka that I wear when temps drop below 20. It's a bit on the heavy side, but pretty normal weight for a casual winter coat (i.e. not for backpacking). The pockets and hood are cozy, and the pockets are deep enough to be useful. The length is perfect for keeping my thighs and rear warm, but not getting in the way of walking. I often bike commute in this jacket and it's short enough to not get in the way of the rear fender/tire, and the side zippers allow for great range of leg-motion. What would I change? The interior pocket is ok, but I'd much prefer an exterior breast pocket. I don't want to have to open my coat in the winter to access something. I have the "Briarsmoke" color. It's fine, not offensive, but I'm not in love with it.
Winter is coming!
Great coat for WI winters! I’ve been wanting a big winter parka for awhile, and this one has everything you need! It has the thickest and warmest hood I’ve ever experienced on a jacket - even doubles as a pillow on a high backed chair! Fit is as expected, so I would get your normal size. It has an inside chest pocket that will come in handy (and I expect in all my coats now) and since it hits just above the knees it has zippers down the side so that when you sit down you don’t feel restricted. Arm length could be a hair longer, but I have long arms and they fit fine. I tested walking dogs at 30 degrees with a tshirt underneath and I was steamy warm! I also tested it sitting (not moving) for a while with long sleeve tshirt at 30 degrees and I was very comfortable. A great coat for outdoor sports during chilly seasons! Material seems tough and water resistant, also I was worried weight of coat would be significant but it’s not. Color is briarsmoke - depending on light it’s either a purpley brown or a browny purple. Nice color that would go with most things. My favorite feature is the thick hood - well done REI!!
Fit is good, but color is not as advertised
There were 2 reasons I chose this coat 1) it was the only one I could find in my size that covered my hips, and 2) I LOVED THE COLOR!!! It fits properly but sadly the color of the coat that was delivered is not the color advertised on the website. The color on the website, "stone blue", looks like a light blue/grayish color, which was very appealing. The one I received in the mail today is straight up navy/dark blue, which is very blah and uninteresting, even though the label says "stone blue". Very disappointing! Now my predicament is whether or not to return it, because as I said, finding a coat with the right length in my size is challenging.
BEST coat, especially for the price!
LOVE this coat! I have been wanting a long coat for years and haven't been able to find one I really liked. This one fits nicely (I don't look like I'm wearing a sleeping bag) and I like the color too. Life is too short for all black coats! I like that I am able to zip the coat up from the bottom on the sides and at the front for more movement. The coat is very toasty! It was also less expensive than some of the other brands I looked at and the other perk is that the arms are long enough. That is something I struggle with in many brands. Columbia and REI are the two brands I've found that usually work. Super happy with this purchase!
Great looking and WARM!
I just came back from visiting a friend in New York. It was very cold, and my friend was wearing her $1500 down coat, while I was freezing in a California lightweight down jacket. I decided I needed a warm coat for my trips to the snow, and scored this on sale for $38 after applying my dividend. I LOVE this coat! I wear it for early morning dog walks, and I recently wore it on a trip to Seattle. It's as cute as my friend's coat in my opinion, and so toasty and warm. I could not be happier with my purchase!! I wear an XS or S depending on brand, and an XS in this coat fits me perfect, with room for layers if needed.
Cute but durable winter jacket
I love this coat. It’s very attractive and it’s outer shell is a thicker material, almost like a thick parachute. The Sherpa is only in the hood and not all through the coat which I like cause I feel like that could get too hot. Great length- hits me mid thigh but covers my butt. I’m 5’10” and 175lbs- I got an XL and it’s perfect
Warm and beautiful!
I love this coat! It is a great quality, which I have found to be true of all REI products. The color is stunning (briarsmoke) - I have never seen a color like it before, and have gotten many compliments while wearing it! I really wanted to see how it did in cold weather, but amazingly it has been warm for weeks! The coldest temperatures I tried it in were the low 40’s and it kept me incredibly warm. I am usually always cold, but was not in this coat! I live in Upstate NY and I firmly believe I will be warm in it all winter long. I prefer coats with removable hoods (this one is not), but I wouldn’t say that is a bad thing, just my preference. The fit was great, but it did run a tad larger than most smalls. I think that will work well though when winter comes and I have baggy clothes underneath. *Free product in exchange for an honest review
Kept Me Warm in the Arctic Circle
This parka kept me warm in Swedish Lapland (even though it is 650 and not 800-rated fill) with a heavyweight base layer. (Caveat: we were provided with special clothing for certain outdoor activities). I was generally comfortable at about 12 degrees fareinheit if moving around. I am 5' 7" and 120 lbs. chose size S, and I had plenty of room to add layers beneath.
