For boots: Add one half size to your street shoe size. You should be able to slip one finger behind your heel when you are standing up with the boot unlaced and your toes touching the front. If the boot is too short, your toes will get smashed walking downhill. Too long and your heel will slide up and down and give you blisters.

Super light, very supportive, look great, loved the traction, crazy comfortable right out of the box on a 3 day mountain traverse. If I didn’t need a hiking boot to keep my feet dry in the rainforest, I’d have been thrilled! But I do, so I wasn’t. Hence the mixed review. Unfortunately don’t let the “goretex” label fool you. I even pre-treated twice with some Nik-wax! One day of hiking in a fairly decent rain and fog - not even tramping through streams or out in a downpour - and my feet were sloshing around in a boot full of water, feet wet as the muskeg around me. So if you’re going to stay dry anyway, rock solid lightweight backpacking boot. If you NEED to stay dry, though, sadly look elsewhere.
I spend a lot of my time off trail, foot falling into underground streams and things like that. These Boots are perhaps the best I have ever owned. Very light, and incredible support without feeling stiff at all. The tread is not aggressive in appearance, but I have never slipped and this is in the context of crawling over wet deadfalls in the rainforest out here. The one improvement I would hope for is the speed lacing requires 30 seconds of effort to get tight. That is obviously not a huge issue.
Bought these for backpacking. Footwear review is personal, so this is MY experience with these boots. I do have a history of wearing lighter hiking boots for backpacking which suits me fine. So may not be for peeps who prefer beefier boots for backpacking. Hiked with 25ish lb pack in high Sierra. I feel confident these would hold with heavier pack for me on longer trips. PROS: feels feather light, decent support, feet did not overheat, good waterproofing (streams and snow), good traction on rocks (wet and dry), Stable. CONS: more protection along lower side would be nice (but I guess that's weight penalty)
Both of us had to return them. I first put this boot on and was so excited. I even confined my partner to get the women’s version for our summer trip of hiking 7 days in Europe. Initial impression was: Comfortable and super tacky sole. In the store and parking lot, such a comfortable shoe. And that’s wheeler the fairy tale ends. like clockwork, after 5-6 miles, feet are dying. Thought it was a breaking in period so we took them to hike 75 miles in Europe. Awful experience, both of us. When I got home, I was in the position to suck it up and get new pairs of shoes or try to return them and get one ones after. Forturnatelt, REI has a satisfaction guarantee because I needed to cash that check.
I went against every shred of advice ever given and bought these boots immediately before a huge hiking trip. And I must say, I was shooketh at how comfortable these bad boys were immediately out of the box. I wore them for a few walks and a short hike with my dog and wore them during the day to attempt to break them in, but no where near the recommended break in mileage for your typical boot. Then I packed them up, and flew 7000 miles to southern chile and walked 50 miles without a single blister. On day 5 the soles of my feet were sore, but that is typical for me on day 5 of any trek with any boot I’ve owned before. Solidly comfortable, water proofing was effective, good grip/traction on a mix of surfaces (snow, wet rock, scree, loose dirt). This is my first boot from la sportiva, but it won’t be my last.
I don't love the lacing system. It's difficult to get the heel secure without the laces being too tight across the instep. That said, they are waterproof, full traction, the downhill braking system or whatever they call it actually does what it purports to. They feel light and energetic and they took very little break in.
A great boot for off trail backpacking and hiking. Have used on High Sierra Route and Cascades. Very light, supportive with good lateral stability. I was surprised how my feet feel after 7-8 hours on trail - not sore, don't feel need to even take off the boots in camp. Treat periodically with nikwax and feet dry after day in snow, No break in required - used out of box with no issues. Only concern is durability - a pair lasts 1-2 seasons with 200 miles per season. But since fairly inexpensive, and otherwise great, worth replacing.
