Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

Remarkable product, extremely comfortable even for large users, great arch support, beautiful moss green and gray rubber sole colors. Fluorescent orange accents really improve visibility. MaxTracâ„¢ soles are very grippy and tractable. Green woven synthetic fabric really breathes. They look way better than pictures, hard-to-find green size 15.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Personally, I’m really into clothes and shoes. One would say I’m really into fashion. These… these!! BLEW ME AWAY! Recently I picked up some Hoka Cliftons and tell me why these are just as comfortable. I did get a half size bigger than I normally do, but they were still fitting nicely! Definitely a unique look, if you don’t mind the giant soles, but the look is unique Forsure! Overall, these are really comfortable and squishy. If you need a comfy shoe for walking or running and don’t mind the squish, these are definitely worth looking into! Trust me.
The Altra Experience Trail Running Shoe is a little funky to look at, but it is a good shoe for trail running. The toe box is roomy, almost too roomy for a person with normal-width feet. The heel always felt secure and never slipped. The arch support was minimal at best; that is something to be improved or avoided if you need significant support. The traction kept my feet secure on loose dirt and rocks without adding significant weight to the shoes. The heel of the shoe has a small velcro strap that is useless for any function. Trying to attach a light, keys, or an air tag was a waste of time. The velcro needs to be longer to support any of the above. Just remove it. The shoes did the job but would not be my first choice if I had the choice.
I’m a long time runner, but this is my first pair of Altra shoes. Over the past few weeks, I’ve put about 100 miles on them over a variety of slopes and terrain: gravel, turf, packed sand, mud, dirt, and pavement. The MaxTrack outsoles gripped great on all surfaces, even just after a rain. The shoes have a low drop with light to medium cushion, which is my preferred setup. I really like the toe box that’s roomier than most other running shoes. I can feel the extra articulation it allows in my toes and feet. They’re lightweight and feel comfortable on my feet. These shoes have a lot going for them, but they just aren't for me. The heel fits snug, not loose, but has a squishy side to side feel that I don’t care for. The heel tab comes up very high and gave me blisters on my achilles during the first, short break-in run. Switching to taller socks solved the blister problem. I’m also not digging the faded gray/orange color scheme and wish I had gotten the black shoes. What bummed me out the most is that they caused me knee pain. I don’t get that with my other shoes, even when running 20+ miles on pavement. I haven’t seen knee pain in other reviews, so this might be specific to me.
These are my first Altra shoes and I am quite impressed. They feel nice and have great traction. I'm trying to get back into running after a long hiatus and find running on trails to be nicer, and a lot more fun, than running on pavement. I tend to be between an 8 and 8.5 in most running shoes and I probably should have gone with an 8.5 for these. There is an ever slight bumping of toes into the front of the shoe. That is more my fault than Altra though. Good cushioning, so far they have worn well and breathe respectably well in warmer conditions. I have not had them in mud yet so cannot comment on the performance there. The gaiter tab is a nice tough and I really like the offset lacing
I love these. I mostly run in Brooks Cascadia, and these have converted me. The Lone Peaks I tried fit well and I liked the zero drop and wide toe box, but they were too minimalist for me and my feet couldn’t go too long in them. These hit the mark: fit great and comfortable. I’ve used them on trails, on a treadmill, walking around, even playing pickleball. I keep reaching for these shoes. Minor complaints: the high heel makes it easy to put on the shoe but they rub my achilles a bit. Also not sure why trail running shoes have to only come in loud colors. The ones I received aren’t terrible but something more muted would make these an every day wear for me.
The sole of the shoe is pillowy soft with a lot of midsole support making rough trails feel super smooth. Despite the softness, they noticeably mute trail feedback, which is Pro or con depending on preference. Though, the extra cushion seems to make a noticeable difference for recovery. The deep heel feels supportive enough to reduce discomfort and mitigate injury over shoes with a thinner midsole. There’s enough drop to make me want to go faster but not so much that I couldn’t wear them casually. I found the drop to be a nice balance of effortlessly increasing my pace without too much compromise of downhill control. My favorite part is the generous toe box. I have wide feet and the toe box lets my digits comfortably spread, which I feel provides more stability and reduces the likelihood of blisters and discomfort during long runs for me. The thick outsole and aggressive tread pattern provide good traction on all types of terrain. I found them to be grippy in both wet, dry, and loose over hard terrain. Break-in time was pretty minimal, less than 20-30mi. They felt great right out of the box, even without swapping out the stock sole inserts. Long-term durability is yet to be determined but my initial impression is that these will hold up well over many miles.
This was my first foray into Altra shoes. Historically, I've used some similarly styled shoes, then when I developed knee pain I switched to some much more cushioned shoes. Now that I've been using cushioned shoes for a while, I decided to try going back to a more sensitive shoe, and the Experience Wild is a pretty good choice for that return. Specifically, as someone new to Altra, there is a lot about this shoe that makes it approachable. It has heel drop, unlike many other Altras (but like many other types of trail runners), and it has a pretty standard design. The tread on the bottom grips well on rocks and roots, and seems to be durable, at least for the few weeks I've been using the shoe. The upper shoe has all the features I need, and none I don't. It's light enough, but not paper thin, it's got gaiter attachments, but isn't overly burly. It's breathable and comfortable, but not oddly cushy. The heel is a little weird, and I've experienced a bit of heel rub on one of my feet, but bending the heel back usually fixes that. The little loop makes pulling the shoes on and off easy, and the colors are low-key and pleasant. The laces are solid, and make lacing up the shoes simple. None of that matters, however, if the shoe doesn't run well. Fortunately, it does run pretty well. If you're an Altra purist, you might not like this shoe for the heel drop, but if you are just entering the Altra world, I think that this is probably the shoe to do it in. The shoe is responsive, and feels like a standard trail runner. Not super cushy, and I personally wouldn't use it for super long runs, but for shorter to medium distance runs, or especially for rocky or gravel-based uphill endeavors, this is my go to. Especially for shorter runs, races, or workouts, the aggressive tread and sensitive feel deliver the feedback and performance necessary to move quickly. That being said, I think I would get sore over much longer distances, so I might reach for one of my other, more cushioned shoes for that situation. That's my personal preference though. The distinctive and spacious Altra toebox is present on these shoes, and as my first pair of Altras, I can safely say I see what the hype is about. It's roomy and nice, and it is certainly comfortable. I wish other brands would emulate this type of toebox. Altogether, the Experience Wild is a solid, middle of the road trail shoe. It does nothing exceptionally well, but checks just about every box. Especially for people trying to get into Altra shoes, this would be a great way to ease into their geometry. Ultimately, it's a simple shoe that does its job well, reminding you to lace up, start moving, and experience wild.
These are my new go to trail shoes! Great for all trails no matter the terrain. The comfort of the upper, the ease of feel with the rocker shaped mid soul and the grip on the soul kept my feet feeling great on the rough terrain in the French Alps.
Love this show! I was nervous about the 4mm drop since I’ve always been an Altra runner for the 0mm drop. I could tell when I put them on that they weren’t the Altra I was used to. But once I started running in them, my worries went away. Great trail shoe! Responsive. Secure. Comfortable. Fit true to size for me.
