Sizing Notes

Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements. Some women's pants are available in petite and tall sizes. Typically petite sizes fit women 4'11" to 5'3". Regular sizes fit women 5'4" to 5'8". Tall sizes fit women 5'9" to 5'11".

PETITE: Generally, as compared to regular sizes, petite sizes are 2.5 inches shorter in inseam, 1 inch shorter in body length, 1.25 inches shorter in sleeve length and Âľ inch shorter in total rise.

TALL: tall sizes are 3 inches longer in inseam, 2 inches longer in body length, 2.5 inches longer in sleeve length and 1.25 inches longer in total rise.

Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.

Inseam is measured to the floor.

These rain pants were a lifesaver!

Words cannot express how much I love these rain pants. I recently spent 2 weeks in Iceland on a study abroad program and was battling constant wind and rain. I pushed these bad boys to their limit while hiking around waterfalls, cutting turf, and planting trees, and they held up perfectly! Every day, I would take them off and my pants underneath would be perfectly dry. I have nothing but good things to say about these rain pants. Worth every penny!

Good, but could be better

They are comfortable, easy to put on, look good for what they are. So far I've worn them over jeans for warmth and a windbreak, so I can't comment on their waterproofing, but previous rain pants I've bought from REI effectively kept out rain and I assume these will too. What I don't like is that they are too tight by the knee and lower thigh and pull there when walking up an incline. They seem to have more give a bit lower down, so maybe they would work better in that way for someone a little taller. I am about 5' tall and bought the shorter size. These also would be better if they had pockets and if the bottoms were gathered so the legs would fit more tightly over boots, though they are not too long for me without that; for someone even shorter they might be. I like that these do not have a string to pull out to tighten the legs or the waist; those stick out too much and are awkward to use.

waterproof/windproof!

Bought for a trip to rainy/windy Iceland in its fall/winter season. Was EXCELLENT at keeping me dry under a waterfall and windproof in strong winds/rain. Also so glad this was offered in petite sizes! I'm 5'1' and was super happy with this purchase.

Good quality gear

These are well made, waterproof pants. They have an elastic waistband with drawstring for custom fit, ankle zips for easy on/off, pockets for personal items. I received a size marked Small, but I normally wear size 12 (Large) and the pants fit perfectly. There wouldn't be enough room to wear bulking clothing underneath, but a pair of insulated leggings fit nicely. The green color isn't one I would normally wear but it isn't too bright and thus matches a lot of other colors. The pants do make sound when moving, but that is the nature of most waterproof pants. They don't have stretch so they don't have much give when climbing or bending. Thus, getting the right size is more important. I live in a very wet climate and am outdoors a lot so the pants will get used often. Overall, I'm very pleased with the quality, color, and features of REI Trailmade pants.

My favorite rain pant

Bought these just in time for todays monster rainstorm. Wore them for a 30 mile ride with 3 big cloudbursts. Wore shorts underneath with gaiters and shoe covers. Stayed completely dry with almost no condensation in the rain pants. These are actually for my wife but I used them today and they were great. This is the 3rd pair of these REI rain pants we’ve purchased over the years and we have been real happy with them. They are very light and pack well. We also have used expensive Gore and Elite raingear and I find these light weight coated fabrics better. There you have it. 5 stars, lightweight, packable and they keep me dry.

Great for recent trip to rainy, cold Alaska

Although I was initially unhappy that these didn’t qualify for the sale price due to misinformation from an associate, I decided to keep them. They were perfect for my recent trip to Alaska. We had lousy weather- rainy and cold. I wore these over leggings and was completely warm and dry all day. I am normally an XL/14-16, 5’2”and these fit great. I was able to move, sit, bend without even noticing they were on. Folded up nice and small in my suitcase. I wish they had front pockets. The back pockets were not easy to access. The zippers down the side of the pant legs (not full length) made putting these on over my hiking boots pretty easy. Next time I would get the ones that have a full length zip and front pockets.

Comfortable Waterproof Pants

I am 5'3", 140 pounds, with a curvy bottom and hips. I am in that awkward height between petite and regular. Often times pants that are standard length for everyone tend to be too long and I typically have to get a hem. I ordered a medium in these and they are a perfect length, especially when wearing with hiking boots or chunky sneakers. I haven't tested in the wild yet, but I have poured water on them to test their waterproof effectiveness. They are 100% waterproof. They are comfortable. The inside is breathable, and not sticky. I could easily fit a base layer/thin leggings underneath the pants. They even somehow have a slimming effect so I dig it.

Very poor sizing, X-Small petite more like XL

XS petite is more like a medium or large fit. In REI’s quest to be inclusive with XXXL sizing, they’re now excluding small sizes, or making those small sizes 3x bigger than before. At 37 years old, I’ve been fitting into regular small and extra small sizes for decades, but they are no longer small enough. I can fit more than 4 fingers in the waist band of the extra small petite size. The extra small is nowhere near small. Do better REI, your adult sizes used to fit me and they haven’t in about two years. The kids sizes are not the same fit or functionality, that’s not an option.

Nice basic shell

The pants shown are not what I received. The pair of pants I tried are a simple shell - 1 back pocket, and zips around the ankles. More of a rain shell than pants. They ran very large. I wear a Small, and these were oversized. Fit over bulky pants and did a good job keeping me dry, but not what I expected at all based on the picture showing more of a hiking pant. I’ll use them when I need to put something on over other pants to keep me dry. Not bad for shoveling and walking around.

Great, but need a few tweaks

I wore these pants hiking the W Trek for 5 days in Patagonia. They kept me dry through heavy rain, snow and wind to 60mph. I’m 5’4’’ and 120 lbs and sized up to small. They were a little loose in the waist and seat, but that’s what you want to allow proper movement. My two complaints: no hand pockets, which I really needed to store wet gloves or my phone, and the bottom zippers do not allow removal over boots (size 8). The zippers need to be at least to the knee for them to be functional. I will upgrade to the Rainier pant for these two reasons, but overall, these pants did perform very well.

Not for hill climbs

I really wanted these to work out but... I felt like I was paying for the REI brand versus quality and functionality. What impressed me was that they were long (5'9") and could accommodate a layer underneath. That being said, I started walking around the house, and that included stairs. Very tight on the knees when climbing. And these were normal stairs so I would hate to feel them on a hill climb. The fabric also did not impress me. I felt that one good nudge by a branch or rock would create a hole rendering them useless.
