Good basic coat with a tough exterior

It's hard for a heavy woman (5'6" and 215 pounds) to find a good field-going coat. Sturdy coats for men that fit in the chest and shoulders aren't big enough in the hips. Many coats for women have outer shells that can't take the abuse of working in the woods. But this coat has what I wanted - water-resistance, down, and a tough exterior. It's not fancy but it has all the pockets I need, velcro closures on the sleeves, an adjustable hood, and vents. It ticks all my boxes. My one complaint? Less than ten days after I bought it, it went on sale and if I'd waited, I could have saved over a hundred dollars. Sure would appreciate it if someone from REI would see this and offer me some of that money back!

This would have been a great jacket (lightweight, warm AND waterproof), but it was just too narrow in the hips. Oh well. Too bad it didn't come in a larger size, or provide more room in the hips.

Warm Coat

Very warm yet lightweight jacket. I’m particularly fond of the numerous pockets as I usually have quite a few things I like to carry (wallet, phone, dog bags all fit with ease). Hasn’t been much rain here in Jersey, but I feel very confident that this jacket will continue to perform well even in damp conditions. I’m 5 foot 8 inches tall about 155 pounds and I got a large. I can comfortably fit bulky clothes underneath. I like the option to tighten the cuffs and the hood is useful in windy conditions.

Warm, sturdy coat with some sizing issues.

I was sent this coat to try out and in return give my honest opinion. To start, the coat is very well made and feels sturdy enough to be put through some hard living. The waterproof hard shell outer layer was great at blocking cold winds while I tromped through the woods and wore it in town and performing outside chores around our home. Sadly, I did not get to test the coat in wet conditions. I enjoy the concept of having an 800 fill power down coat that I don’t have to fret about getting dogged out if the weather turns wet or super windy. At 800 fill power, the coat was toasty in the low 30s and would serve well into much lower temps. One thing I did notice was the hard shell did not breathe like a traditional down, but the designers were kind enough to give two deep pit zips to dump heat as needed. This thing has so many pockets! As a gadget girl, and someone who has a million needs for pockets I appreciate how many are available. My only qualm with this coat is the cut. I received a Large- typically wear this size, but I find REI women’s sizing to be iffy. Usually, I have trouble with shoulders being too snug, but this one fit like a dream. I ran into troubles at the chest. I was able to zip the coat without issue; my chichis felt smooshed. I didn’t have the upper range of motion in the torso that I would have liked. I do wish the hemline was an inch longer to accommodate activities that need a lot of overhead motion without the need to yank it back in place. Overall, this is a great coat for everyday outside or front country use. Just needs some fit work. For sure would spend my own money on this, just in a bigger size.

Versatile jacket for rainy season, chilly hikes

Tl;dr - This jacket is great! Warm, good quality, versatile, lots of pockets, and can match his and hers versions. LONG REVIEW: The second I saw that this women's Stormhenge jacket was available to try, I knew I had to get it! You see... I had coincidentally gifted my boyfriend the men's version of this exact same jacket a few years ago. He had picked this particular jacket after shopping and trying on several jackets at 4 different stores (North Face, Arcteryx, Bass Pro Shops, and of course REI) before deciding on this one for this Christmas gift. So from having witnessed his experience using the jacket (and occasionally stealing it to use) over the years, I already knew that I was going to love having one of my own. My jacket is Odyssey Grey and size XS, which fits me (5'3", 125 lbs) like a glove. As I live in suburban California, and it rarely dips below 40F here, the snug fit works fine as I don't anticipate needing to wear anything thick underneath. PROS: - Having worn it a few times in both rain and shine, I like the versatility to cinch the hood, the bottom hem, and/or the sleeves to bundle up when it's cold or be able to unzip the pit zips when it's hot. - As you can see in my rainy day photos, the waterproofing works great as water beads right off the durable exterior shell. And the hood has a slightly stiffer brim to keep the rain off your face even when cinched. - Love that it has 3 external pockets and 3 internal pockets, and they're all big enough to fit a phone. The bf is jealous that my newer version has more pockets than his older version does. - The quality of the down fill seems well-distributed, and it definitely keeps you warm. I have yet to see a feather leak from either my jacket or his jacket, which has been washed a few times. - The grayish purple exterior and lavender interior match with everything. - Small details are great like how there's fabric covering the main zipper to keep it off your chin, the sleeves are on the longer side to keep you covered, and the hand pockets are a cozy soft fabric. CONS: - After being out in the rain for ~20 mins, I noticed the fabric at the ends of the sleeves was actually getting wet as it's thinner with no filling there so my hands got a little damp. Would recommend either keeping one's hands in the pockets or wearing gloves with this if you're in the rain for a while. - The 3 different cords for cinching the hood can take some getting used to. - As the shell exterior goes over the horizontal baffles of the down filling, one's silhouette can look puffy, which isn't the most flattering but is to be expected with down jackets.

Ready for the storms!

Wonderful jacket! Mine arrived just before the first big storm of the year out here in Santa Fe and I was delighted with how warm it kept me out on the town and up hiking around the mountains. We also got a bit of rain towards the end of the storm and this puffy stayed nice and dry. I’m obsessed with the venting pit zippers – these are what’s been lacking in my old winter go-to puff and it honestly makes this jacket so much more versatile. The pockets are plentiful but I wish the interiors pockets were a little more secure. The hood cinched well around my face and was perfect for the cold winds but I’m curious to see the fit with my helmet when I take it skiing this weekend. The insulation is well distributed and I have felt really warm in this thing – no rogue cold spots. Compresses down pretty well; I’ve included a pic of the jacket in one of my stuff sacks next to a can for scale. Aesthetically, I like purple (Odyssey Gray), and it’s a cute and well-made jacket.

Perfect jacket for extra warmth in mixed weather!

I’ve been able to take this jacket out for a few test runs so far this winter and it has not disappointed! The most surprising feature for me was how waterproof it was. Typically these hybrid jackets have a balance of waterproof and warmth but when it really pours you need a true shell on the outside. This jacket performed amazingly on a long hike which started with some light snow that turned into a complete downpour. In terms of features, the exterior pockets are extremely deep and softly lined. It’s got multiple interior pockets to hold a pair of gloves, a hat or sunglasses and also an interior zipper pocket to hold a card or cash. There is a bungee to tighten up the hood, which came in handy during the downpour. Although it’s a small detail, I appreciate that the hood bungees are in a spot that they don’t flip up in my mouth when the jacket is zipped up (as some others do). It’s very minimal and out of the way. I love the length of the jacket, it gives some good coverage but most importantly directs water off of your body and not straight down your behind. Last big thing that I enjoyed was this small roll of filling right behind the neck. Again, small detail but it keeps drafts out and is just plain comfortable. I have the Odyssey Grey color with a lighter purple interior. The “grey” color is interesting and unique- it’s not exactly grey but maybe a very, very dark blue. I like it because it doesn’t scream over the top girly but is definitely feminine. And that interior (light purple) lining is SO incredibly soft! I am really happy with this jacket and highly recommend it!

Solid jacket for cold days

Loving this jacket. It's just right for walks on crisp days and has features that I want in a jacket for long days outside. Adjustable cuffs, pit zips (long ones, so you can really dial-in the extra ventilation), generous pockets (two outer zippered pockets, two inner, and an inside zippered pocket for stuff you want to keep secure). The outer shell feels and (so far) has proven quite durable: I've brushed past branches and even brambles without a problem. The jacket feels well made, like it's going to last a while. I haven't worn it out in really bad weather yet, but I've played with the hood adjustment and am pretty sure it will handle stormy weather just fine. One thing that I would change: I'm pear-shaped, so gear is a choice of too large in the shoulders or a bit tight in the hips. I chose a size medium and it's just right in the shoulders and snug in the hips. Just a little bit more room in the hips would make this a perfect fit for me.

Warm and Cozy Coat

This is literally the best coat I’ve ever had. It is so comfortable and fits perfectly. I don’t love really short coats or long coats and this one is the perfect length. Thick and cozy without feeling bulky. I love the big pockets and secret zipper pocket inside. It was -5 degrees today and I still felt perfectly fine walking a couple blocks outside. It’s a beautiful color and I love that it has a hood. I can’t believe how cute and comfy this coat is.

Warm and dry, awesome at blocking wind

The main test of this jacket for me was whether it could stay warm and dry, but also breathable; it performed well on these fronts - great for hiking in cold, rainy conditions. It's def less breathable than down alone, but usually I wear a rain shell with a down jacket underneath in wet conditions; this jacket is quieter than most shells and truly amazing at blocking wind. The color is a nice gray mauve. The silhouette is a bit unflattering because of a lack of seams to add shape to the fabric, this probably helps with keeping dry. Functionally, the fit is good: it falls to just below the hip and is roomy for layering underneath (I got a Medium and am 5'4'', small chest, wide hips, 130 lbs). There are tiny lumps under the armpits created by the vent zippers, but if I'm wearing more than a t-shirt these are not noticeable. Like many such vents, unzipped, they become gaping holes, the zipper curling open to whatever one is wearing underneath. I would prefer a mesh underlayer on the vent to keep the holes uniform and less obvious. The hood is super generous and cozy, I have to flip up the edge in order to see well which lets some water hit my face if its raining. There is room for a helmet and you can cinch the hood. The fleece-lined hand pockets zip, they could use an edge of fabric over the zipper so you don't feel the zipper on your wrist. The interior chest pocket is zippered and fits my phone easily while still keeping it from bumping around while I hike. I have fallen asleep wearing this jacket several times because it is so cozy and cocoonish.

Effective and comfortable winter jacket

This coat is perfect for snowy, cold days walking the dogs or shoveling snow. The HydroWall technology is very effective and kept me dry and warm while out. The hood is very large, which is the only negative I have to point out, I need to flip the rim up which is fine, but a little annoying - definitely has total coverage though! Pockets are deep enough which is something I'm always looking for. Overall, this jacket is perfect for Colorado winters!
