Sizing Notes

Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.

Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:

Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.

Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.

Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

IS THIS SHOE TRUE TO SIZE? The product Features above will provide a suggestion if Altra advises you to size up or down in this particular shoe. If no such note exists, please order your regular size.

Fit my needs as a casual hiker

These boots are perfect for me. I’m a very casual hiker. I get out maybe once or twice a month. Usually on 3-5 mile hikes. The wide toe box was my main motivation in buying these boots since I’m making a change to foot shaped shoes. Overall, I’m very satisfied with my purchase. These boots give me the support, stability, and comfort that I’ve been looking for. They look pretty cool too.

Returned after wearing once

There is a seam that rubs on your ankle and after attempting to make multiple adjustments to the lacing I returned them. Not sure how a shoe manufacturer cannot identify this prior to putting a shoe on the market.

Thank You Altra For Making This Product

I have been hiking in Lone Peaks, buy they were not providing the cushion that I needed. I tried the Olympus, but they run small and ended up losing the skin and nail off one of my toes. I recently completed a 300 mile section hike of the AT and also did about 50 trail miles in the shoes to prep. I went across a lot of rock surfaces in NJ, NY, CT, and MA. These shoes served me well and I am glad that they are available, especially in the size (14) that I need. Thank you Altra for making this product and having the GoreTex version available.

Good idea, but DURABILITY!

I love the fit and feel of Altra shoes, and the Timp 5 fits and feels great. I like the traction, dig the green color, but again, Altras seem to miss the mark in durability. I have a beautiful pair of their boots, weeks old, grateful and stoked, and the surface of the shoe in the toe cap area is degenerating rapidly, peeling and shaving away. I use them only for hiking my property, and light tree work. The snow has been proper deep, but I have used them a handful of times and they seem to be failing rapidly. I live in a remote area so I will wear them until they perish, but pretty sad with altra again, and probably wont give them another last try. I have rolled many pairs of Altras, love em, but man do they miss the mark in the durability category.

I would not buy this boot.

I loved the comfort and fit of this boot when I first got it. It felt great on the foot and I could wear it all day. However the first day I did boot things wearing it (light hiking) the toe cap and sole separated. I returned it to Altra within the window and it took WEEKS to get my refund. Now I really want to try the new Olympus hiker as I still haven't found a zero drop hiker to meet my needs, but due to my experience with the Timp hiker I'm worried that the Olympus will not hold up to even light hiking. It really is a shame, as there are Altra running shoes I want to try as well, but I am worried to after the quality (or lack there of) of the Timp. I would not buy this boot again though, even though it felt incredible on my foot.

Design issue makes them unwearable

I have three other Altras including the Timp trail running shoes and they're all great, so I expected these boots to be equally good. After wearing them around the house for an hour I began experiencing severe irritation on my inside ankle bone. I should have read the reviews on the Altra site before buying them - many others report the identical issue. (There's a hard protruding area where the tongue is attached to the inside of the boot near the lower lacing hooks.) Due to this problem they're unwearable so regretfully I will be returning them. For context, this is the first negative product review I've ever written.

Very comfortable, worst durability of any shoe

Horrible durability. I'll be lucky to get four hikes out of these. After my first hike (12 miles in Goat Rocks) the rubber at the front of the toe had already completely separated. My second hike, 9 miles in the snow, and the leather in the toe has already substantially worn, likely due to the friction with the snow. I worry for the waterproofing. The rubber has separated even further. I consider myself a fairly typical hiker. 5'10" and 160 lbs. Not exactly hard on my gear. It's such a shame too because these fit my feet very well. Absolutely do not rely on these for anything but the most pristine, paved hikes.

Tight around Ankle

I have been wearing the Altra Lone Peak Mid AWT Hiker for years. Own 3 different colors cause they are extremely comfortable. I thought I would give the new Vibram sole a try in the Tmp Hiker. I wear a Mens 9, as a woman, I prefer men's colors and fit. I found this Hiker to be very uncomfortable around the ankle. They are the identical design as mt Lone Peak Mid hikers. I've never had any issues with those and no breaking period ever needed. ALTRA...what are you doing? what's with the shorter laces?? impossible to double tie the laces. I know Altra upgraded their Gortex waterproof...but I returned these cause they just ran smaller than my Lone Peak Mid ALW hikers.

Great shoe but has some issues

This shoe has been a game changer for me, but it is not without issues. Durability is OK, but the toe caps peeled back after a few hikes due to separation of the leather top surface. More importantly, the location and shape of the lacing hooks makes them dangerous. I have caught the hook on one shoe with a hook on the other a couple times. If you have never done this, it means being dropped quickly to the ground when you feet lock together and come out from under you. I deal with this by always wearing gaiters and keeping the upper laces tighter than I would prefer, so not the end if the shoe, but something to be aware of.

Worked well.

I recently trekked EBC in a pair of them and would like to share my thoughts. First impressions: Light weight. Easy to put on and take off. The Footshape is there. The outsole worked well - I only slipped a few times on extremely loose dirt while descending, but never fell. The infamous ankle rubbing from the stitching is also there, but only when I was trying on with thin socks, so thick pairs of socks are highly recommended. Aesthetic wise, like many here mentioned, the leather parts are black, but the fabric parts are reflective that they appear a bit brownish grey and some parts in dark navy in certain lighting condition. Overall, they worked well and got me through the trek just fine.

Great so far... but not black...

I wear this boot for work and for play. It has a hot spot on the midfoot but I feel like I just need to break them in. They have the comfort and feel I enjoy with Altras (I have wide feet). They look great and work for what I need them for. The only issue is they aren't a true black color--not as they appear on the website. Not a deal breaker and I won't return them but a bit misleading. The only reason I gave them 4 stars was because of this. Plan on beating them up and putting them to good use. Great boot overall.
