Great performance and comfortable hoodie
I originally purchased the Shade Hoodie because I live in the desert, where summer temperatures are up to 120+ degrees and going outside requires planning and sunscreen, and I wanted the SPF 50 to be able to go outside safely. I wasn't expecting the Shade Hoodie to be so comfortable and soft, while the sun performance is great, it is also fairly warm when it's cold. I love the temperature range and comfort, so I'm looking at other Free Fly products, I'm hooked. I would highly recommend the Free Fly Shade Hoodie for anyone looking for great performance and comfort in a sun protected garment.
Great Fit and feel
Beautiful shirt to protect my partner from the sun. He loves it!
Most comfortable sun hoody I've worn
This is easily the most comfortable sun hoody I've worn. I've been using cheap polyester fishing hoodies from Amazon for almost a decade, and while they're fine for the money they are not that comfortable. Especially around the neck and upper arms during a long, sweaty hike. I decided it was time to invest in a better quality sun hoody, because I strongly dislike sunscreen and the cheap Amazon ones are uncomfortable for summer hiking. I went to my local store and tried sun hoodies from REI Co-op, The North Face, Patagonia, and Columbia in both Medium and Large sizes. Free Fly was easily the most comfortable in the Large size. The hood was slightly loose, comfortable, but didn't drape over my eyes or fall off easily. It has the perfect amount of hold under a baseball cap without feeling tight. The thumb holes were in the perfect spot and you forget you're using them. A week after purchasing, I used this every day for a week in Maui. It was great for direct sun and not too hot for temperatures in the mid-80s. I've been wearing this off-and-on for the last 6 months depending upon the hike, and I'm shocked how well the soft material is holding up. It feels like luxury underwear, but there is no visible abrasion from thorns or my backpack shoulder straps. For some of the other brands, the Medium was way too tight and the Large felt like a poncho. REI had the worst hood and fabric by far. Way too much material around the neck, almost as if it came with a gaiter. I don't know what they were thinking with that design. The North Face felt nice but the hood was comically big in the Large in an otherwise well fitting hoody.
Size Up
I typically wear a L for form fit and XL for looser relaxed fit (example would be Nike Dri-Fit shirts or adidas golf polos or Travis Mathew tshirts). Love the shirt. Ordered an XL looking for more of a relaxed fit, but these definitely do run small, as it fits closer to a L I’m used to.
A backpacking necessity
Living in Colorado and being a mile closer to the sun you definitely need to pay attention to sun protection when you are outdoors. That's where the shade hoodie excels with its UPF50 protection. Used twice now for a couple of backpacking trips as main piece of clothing the natural odor-resistance truly delivered. A little skeptical at first that the weight of the item would keep me cool but it did it's job. I'm a true believer in the power of the Bamboo Shade Hoodie, time to buy another.
Great shirt
Have worn this shirt daily for 975 miles of the PCT so far. It has performed extremely well in both hot and cold climates and has been comfortable to both hike and sleep in.
Spring break in Maui
My three bamboo shade hoodies (2 lightweight / 1 regular) were my go-to tops when out and about on my 11 day stay in Maui. I don't love constantly lathering on sunscreen, so these tops were awesome. Extremely comfortable in a variety of conditions. I never got too hot in direct sunlight and heat, yet also very nice to have when the sun went down, and the cool ocean breeze rolled in. I will certainly be packing one of these hoodies every time I hit the lakes of MN this summer.
Nice hoodie but sleeves are too short
I'm a woman who normally wears a women's size small. I bought a men's small to see the difference, to get one in black, and to have a bit roomier fit. I like all of it EXCEPT the sleeves. They are shockingly short and I'm no gorilla. Usually men's small sizes are slightly long in the sleeves on me. I'm a bit flabbergasted as to how a normal size small man can tolerate such short sleeves! The thumb holes are useless because they pull the sleeves too tight!
Lightweight and comfortable. I wore this while kayaking and hanging out on the beach over a long weekend. It kept the sun off me, while keeping me appropriately warm/cool in temps ranging between about 60 and 80F. Fit was excellent for my 6'2" 170lb build- though the thumb holes would be a little more comfortable with an extra inch in the sleeves. I suspect I will be getting a lot of use out of this in moderate to warm temps.
Sizing is way off for my build
"I'm 6'3" with a long torso, 50-inch chest, and weigh 260 lbs. This hoody accentuates my moobs way too much, and fits like a compression shirt. However, it would suit the slimmer, skinny giraffe types well. I'll probably avoid a lot of unwanted hate and envy from other dudes on my beach trip down to FL next month by returning it anyway~ Everybody wins!
