Surprisingly Good
Disclaimer: I'm a coffee snob that takes normally takes it black with no additions. With that said, I do enjoy an occasional latte. This was better than I expected. I mixed one packet with 8 oz of 200 degree filtered water. The powder quickly and easily dissolved with no grainy residue. There was good color that you'd expect from a latte. Aroma had an earthy smell--maybe the mushrooms that are in the ingredients; the aroma was my least favorite part. Flavor was good. Overall, very pleased--makes it very easy to enjoy a latte wherever you can get hot water.
Great product in a not-so-great package
Flavorful? You bet this instant has a pleasant taste that lasts for... yes, I'll admit it... hours after it is first prepared. Unlike other instants I have slogged down the trail, this one is pleasantly smooth with no harsh bitterness at all. Now, not is all well with this product however... getting that package open is genuinely frustrating. The tear-open option only tore on half the packages in the box and even when they did tear, they would not open the entire top of the package. Luckily I pack tiny but very sharp scissors with me. I ended up using them on each package and until they reconfigure and improve their design, I suspect you will need a sharp tool nearby before you can enjoy an otherwise enjoyable cup of instant coffee.
Not my cup of tea/coffee
I love to start my day with a hot cup of coffee. When backpacking, that has always meant instant coffee products. I liked how this came with individual pouches. Each pouch has enough powder for one 8-10 oz cup. The pouches made them easy to pack and access in the morning. It was also cleaner than scooping out powder from a tin. Making the coffee was very easy: just boil water, add to powder in mug, and stir. However, I did not care for the flavor at all. The mushrooms overwhelmed the flavor of the coffee and gave the drink an extremely earthy/dirty flavor. It didn't taste like coffee and certainly didn't taste like a latte. If you like mushroom drinks then this might be worth a shot. If you are looking for standard morning coffee, I would try something else.
Robust and shroomy
This was a very interesting blend of coffee. The flavor is not outstanding but it is very tolerable and can be close to enjoyable. I found that this is a great substitute to an afternoon coffee while working. While backpacking I found it to be quite enjoyable, the caffeine crash is much less noticeable that your average cup of coffee so it helps you get through those afternoon miles more easily with fewer breaks. One thing I really enjoyed about this mix is how easily is blends into the water. I had mixed it with luke warm water and it dissolved perfectly. This is probably the best instant coffee mix I have used that doesn’t require boiling water to fully saturate. This product would be 5/5 if the taste was more enjoyable
Works but doesn’t taste like a mocha
This is an effective drink to get you alert and singin on a groggy morning! The taste is not terrible but not great or like a mocha either tho. It has a taste like your mug was used to eat backcountry spaghetti in, which was a bit unexpected! It didn’t taste bad per se, just not what you’d expect from a mocha labeled drink. It mixed up well with barely a swirl and had some “foam” but quickly dissipates. I probably wouldn’t use this again, but it works as a warm energy drink!
Earthy flavored coffee alternative
This is perhaps a biased review as I generally drink black coffee. This has a hint of coffee flavor but is generally a more earthy flavor, closer to mushroom coffee or similar coffee alternatives. It’s also pretty tame when it comes to the amount of caffeine/energy blend and will benefit those that are more caffeine naive. Overall worth a try if you like coffee alternatives or want a mild energy boost, just don’t expect the coffee flavor to be overly prominent.
Good substitute!
I started using this to replace my second cup of coffee at work. I found it didn’t have a caffeine crash or make me antsy. I only drink black coffee and didn’t find this to be too sweet. I consume too much of caffeine throughout the day and would like to start drinking less by using this product
Not coffee but not bad
I dig coffee, I dig mushrooms, and "mushroom coffee" is having a moment in the limelight so I thought I would give this a try. Alpine Start's instant latte mixes up smooth without any weird clumping, which can happen with some powdered creamer substitutes. The instructions say to mix it in 8-10 ounces of hot water and I tried it both ways. 10 oz of hot water is pushing it into "watered-down" territory but 8 oz is about perfect. The smell from a fresh hot cup is strongly of mushrooms but the taste is something else. I found it one of the smoothest instant coffees I have ever tried with a nice creamy finish. Ever-present is a dominate umami taste of mushrooms, though not as aggressively forward as I expected from the smell. I don't get a lot of coffee notes though. It is smooth, creamy, caffeinated, and "mushroomy". If you're interested in trying mushroom coffee (or want to continue your current mushroom coffee habit while backpacking), this'll scratch that itch. If you're craving the taste of coffee and hoping to sneak in the proposed benefits of mushrooms though, be aware it doesn't taste much like coffee.
Definitely doesn't taste like a Latte
I got this thinking/hoping that it would taste just like a latte you get from a coffee shop. Boy was I wrong. I don't like mushrooms and it smells/tastes like mushrooms so me no like. Some of you might love it, but I'm going to stick with my instant coffee for now.
Tastes Terrible
This stuff is horrible tasting. I like my coffee black and I cannot make it through a whole cup of this. The regular alpine coffee in the green packaging is great and I will be sticking to that.
