The Lodge Cast Iron 7” skillet is a winner. It comes pre seasoned from the factory so it is ready to go straight out of the box. The pan is very durable. It works great on my home gas stove as well as on my camp stove or even on the top of my grill. As an added bonus it can be used in the oven as a baking dish. It makes tasty cobbler! The seasoned finish improves with use. It cooks eggs or steaks with equal ease. It is easy to clean with minimal water when camping. Mostly it simply requires scraping out any residual food and then a small rinse with water. A small amount of soap can be used if desired.
We used this product over the Cinco de Mayo weekend at Lake Madison, SD. We used the skillet in what I always consider a strong test of anti stick and ease of cleaning test, with an egg scramble on a propane camp stove. The pre-seasoning was especially nice without having to prepare the skillet at all right out of the box and the complimentary care kit was fantastic with a scrapper, brush, and seasoning spray. Overall, the skillet performed very well. Vegetables were sautéed easily without any sticking and the skillet heats very evenly. This made the egg scramble also very easy with little of the egg sticking to the skillet itself as you will see in the pictures. The only negative feedback is with the silicon handle holder that was a little loose and required you to grip the handle fairly tight to ensure it would not come off while lifting or shaking the skillet. The clean up was easy enough with the scraper removing the bulk of any residue and the brush removing the rest. The added touch with the seasoning spray has the skillet all ready for its next use. All in all, an easy to use and clean product that is a nice addition to our camp cooking set!
I love Lodge products and have used them for years, at home and while camping. It's really nice that the skillet comes "triple seasoned". This is the key to good cast iron cookware. The 7" skillet is good for one or two people for car camping; however I can't recommend it for backpacking, even though they claim it is a "...thin, lightweight design...". Even this small a cast iron skillet is pretty heavy. I made a couple of grilled cheese sandwiches on a backpacking stove and they came out pretty tasty. You'll get the best results if you let the skillet warm up to get even heat (and make sure you butter the bread completely!). The handle holder is great for protecting your hand but fits a little bit loose.
I love this pan! We already had a 10 inch and 12 inch iron skillet, but they're heavy and big. I find myself grabbing this little skillet for cooking an egg, reheating a single serving of things, and made a super cute single-serving dutch baby in it. Tips for making eggs that don't stick in cast iron: 1. let the pan heat up first, at least 3-4 minutes on the stove. 2. Then add oil or butter and let that heat up for another minute. 3. Finally, drop in the eggs. See in the picture, you can get a good fried egg that doesn't stick this way.
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. I really like the size and quality of this pan. As a single person, the more compact size helps me portion food correctly (usually makes dishes for 1-2 people). It cooks 2 eggs for breakfast. If you divide boxed brownie mix in 1/2, it fits a perfect skillet brownie. If you want to get a little fancy, it's fairly lightweight for a camping trip and fits my camping stove just fine. THE HANDLE GETS REALLY HOT. I'm talking: even holding the handle with a cloth pot holder still burnt my hand. They sell silicone holders specifically for cast iron pans, which worked waaay better than my standard pot holders. No complaints, nice pan.
I love the size amd lightness of this cast iron. It's the perfect size to take camping or for home use. It says it is triple seasoned. I had good luck sauteing mushrooms. However those ever tricky scrambled eggs stuck to the skillet. I'l probably reseason the skillet. Just to be safe. The kit it came with was a nice addition.
I’m loving this little cast iron skillet. It’s not something I would take backpacking as it’s a little heavy. But it works great at home. Love the nonstick features and how easily it cooks and cleans.10/10!
This is the cutest little cast iron pan! If you’re looking for a small pan that can live on your stovetop for everyday tasks, this is it. It’s versatile, perfect for eggs, lunchtime dumplings, roasting nuts or spices, or making a grilled sandwich. With proper care, it’s a lovely nonstick pan that will last for decades. Also perfect for camping, as it can go directly on the fire!
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. Pros: sturdy, well-constructed, easily cleaned, can go from stovetop to oven. Cons: size-would have preferred it to be larger. It was challenging to cook bacon and French toast. I also had some sticking occur although when I followed the instructions to heat food slowly, the sticking subsided. Overall, a handy piece to have and would recommend.
