Lightweight, Slight Cushion, Exactly What I Wanted

Felt compelled to review these largely based on the negative reviews predominantly here which I simply do not agree with. I got these specifically for road running and sometimes walks (they've also turned out to be a *fantastic* jump-rope shoe as well). Yes, indeed they run smaller than Prios and I'm glad I researched that and knew this fact before I ordered. My Prios were 9.5 and a touch large, but because I got those for a more casual shoe, that fit was fine. These HFS II pair are roughly a half-size smaller, though they are also a 9.5. I would actually say that the Prio runs large and that these are more true-to-size/expected. That said, please just know that ahead of time. I've been wearing minimalist footwear for about a decade now and I was burned a bit by a Xero shoe purchased many years ago (around 2017 or 2018) and swore them off due for quite a bit of time. However, my wife has two pairs of Xeros in the past couple years now (she joined me in the "barefoot" shoe realm). After her having a good (in contrast to me years back) customer experience and seeing how well her Prios have held up in the past couple years I decided to order a pair. Well my experience was the same - they were great (Prios). So good that two months later I ordered these HFS II pair, as well as a pair of Speed Force II. I intended to keep only one but I kept BOTH. (The SpeedForce is much more minimal and has become my go-to workout shoe, replacing a very worn out Vivobarefoot Primus Lite II pair which I loved). The HFS is much lighter weight than the Prios, slightly heavier than the SpeedForce II ... It has more cusion than either. There is still ground-feel, for certain, but it is more muted. It is exactly what I wanted for minimal shoe road running. I will say that the wet-surface performance is definitely not a grippy as I would like (something I've experienced with all Xero shoe outsoles) but it isn't awful. For reference, in this or similar categories, I own or have owned this HFS II, Speedforce II, and Prio from Xero, as well as Lems Primal 2, and four different pairs of Vivobarefoot Trail (FG, Knit, Sg, Primus). Of them all, Vivos are my favorite overall but they have become insanely expensive, and Xero seems to be making shoes with better construction/durability than I experience in years past. I give this shoe 4 or 4.5 stars, but I'm going to round up based on improvement! Great minimalist running shoe after about 2+ month and a couple hundred miles thus far. (Photos were taken when the shoes were brand new.)

size and fit changed with new production run ; (

I enjoy my Xero prios so much I wanted other styles but this new run must have been made in a different factory. After calling Xero shoes HQ customer service to confirm my size in the HFS II after reading other reviews about the sizing being off I ordered my normal size. My shoes arrived and lo and behold they were too smol. So i returned them and ordered the next half size up confident that I would be ready to take on the new day. Nope, the fit is off and my left foot felt cramped. If you made it this far in my heart breaking story thanks for reading, back to the running board I go! It's not me Xero, it's you!

Size up but all else good

Previous reviewer is correct. Size up by a half size. I ordered my size according to manufacturer's recommendation and wound up having to pay for the return shipping. That is the only reason I'm knocking a star. Just received the larger size and that fit perfectly. First run was exactly as expected. You should not order these if you aren't familiar with zero drop/minimalist running as they have no arch support and essentially no cushioning. Some of us want a shoe that just keeps bits of glass from getting lodged in our feet and nothing else. This shoe accompishes that.

Uncomfortable fit

I have worn barefoot shoes for years and decided to give these a go when my Vivo Barefoot pair (finally) wore out. After a little over 6 months, I’m going to be retiring this pair. While they’re certainly cheaper than most barefoot shoe options, they don’t fit very comfortably. I would definitely get at least a half size larger than your normal size. The uppers, at least towards the toe, are quite stiff and pinch. The toe box is also a little more narrow than standard barefoot shoes. Also, the sole is pretty stiff, so while it’s certainly zero drop, it’s not as minimalist as I am accustomed to. I also tore the upper on the 3rd day of owning these by stepping on a stick, so the nylon isn’t quite durable enough to withstand much work outside the gym. No other parts of the shoe show much signs of wear. I do appreciate how “normal” these look and may try other models from the brand in future, but for now I’m going to go back to my favorite Vivo Barefoots.

Nice shoe, sizing is way off

1.5 sizes off due to the incorrect conversions in the size chart provided on REI website! The chart equates a foot length of 11.2 inches to size 10.5 or EU 43.5. The correct conversion should be foot length in cm x 1.5 + 2 = 45). Do not use the foot lengths on this chart to buy Xeros. I have Xero Mesas in 11.5 and so I ignored the chart and bought 11.5 in these but they were too small. The sizing of the length and the width is narrower in these most recent Xeros compared to earlier versions.
