Good product, sizes run a bit small
I bought this product specifically because it wasn't reviewed here. All the other bike shorts on this site have ranging reviews that made me think twice about each item, so I decided to head into the great unknown. I'm 6', 34" waist, 34" inseam, 210 lbs (today, although I'm working to get down), I am completely top heavy - skinny legs and no butt. I bought the L and they are just too small. Not small that I can't get them on, I can with minor effort, but they're overly tight everywhere and I believe the pad positioning is also a affected. As mentioned in the product description, the pad is cut to sit just where you need it most, which is primarily on what I'll loosely describe as the sit bones (I'm not a dr., nor did I stay at a holiday inn recently). I think this is a great idea but, with the L being too small, I don't think the pads sit exactly where they should. If I "arrange" the shorts just right, I get the benefit of sitting on the pads, and they feel nice. But once I'm up and about while gravel/mtb'ing, the pads might move a little and then I have to readjust, which is easier said than done on singletrack. If I'm just on the road, and not up-and-down from the saddle a ton or just flat falling off the bike, the pad works pretty well. I think I will get another pair in the XL and see if those work better for me. I would have returned these, but I wore them straight away thinking they may have a little bit of stretch to them (they don't). Two things I like about them - 1. the pockets, in my opinion are near perfect in both location and size. The back pockets may be just slightly on the small side, but not for what I'm carrying. 2. If it's a hot day and you're really sweating the material takes on a real shiny appearance, almost latex-like, which seems to attract certain people and can potentially up your social game whilst exercising.
Great for gravel/road, comfortable and functional
Picked these up a while back, and have used them for road and gravel riding. At first, I wasn't sure I really wanted/needed the side cargo pockets, but the more I wear them, the more I like having them. I don't always use them, but they are great for slipping my phone or a gel/bar into the pocket for quick access when I want it. Everything stay put. An added bonus, there are also some small pockets on the back, which are great for keys, ID, and other smaller items that you don't need immediate access to. For the rest of the shorts, they are great. Fit is perfect (6', 195lb, big legs), the chamois was great for an 8+ hour gravel event (LuLackaWyco Hundo), and they had just the right compression for me. Varlo makes some great kit, and it feels good supporting a local to me brand from Philly.
My New Go To
I have tried several different brands of bibs over the years and nothing fits as well or looks as good as these guys. They find the perfect balance between compression and give, and the pockets are sturdy and streamlined even with a phone or a few empty gel packets in them. As for the fit, they are as to be expected for cycling kit. I am 5'9/170 and consistently wear a L in cycling kit. Sometimes XL, but hardly ever M which I am in almost all my street clothes.
