Be aware that most reviews are for the old version, Scree 32L, not the new 33L. The redesign has a number of changes (materials, zippers, straps) and should have its own seperate reviews. The new bag also cost a hundred dollars more. Old version was a great "one bag travel bag" and I will not be paying more for the newer version.
I am impressed at how much you can load inside this pack. I can fit multiple jackets, helmet, cramp on, small camera, water, crampons, and carry my axe and poles on the outside. And it fits very comfortably. The annoying thing is, the buckles are weak. One broke the moment i took it out of the box and test load my gear. And these are not easy to replace buckles. Another small annoying detail are the zipper pulls. They are too small for glove use. Luckily these are easy to replace, which I did with larger paracord and shrink tubbing. Over all it's a fantastic backpack, with a couple of small flaws.
I have been using this pack for about 3 months as my hiking and rock climbing pack. It has been preforming well so far. It’s comfortable when loaded with 40lbs and fits my torso perfectly! I have a 19 1/2” torso so most packs torso length is too short. I got this in the L/XL torso length and it fits me perfect. I’m in the middle of the adjustable range of this pack. I have carried this pack for probably close to 100 miles so far, most of it has been just water and day hiking gear, and I’ve been impressed so far. I plan to take this pack into the Tetons this summer and so I have been wearing it on my training hikes with about 45lbs of water and it’s holding up well. I can fit a double trad climbing rack, personal gear and water/food and first aid kit inside the pack and the rope and helmet on the outside of the pack. I’m hoping that my hunt for the perfect pack for me is over. It’s looking promising so far.
I wondered if Mystery Ranch were just trendy, hyped up over priced packs as they don’t look like anything special. I bought the Scree 32 mainly because I wanted an orange 30ish litre pack as I hike the rocky mountains and being visible may save my life one day. After using it to scramble up numerous cliff faces,I am amazed how the pack did not move and the weight felt like I had nothing on my back, even though the pack was loaded with about 15 lbs of gear. After using Osprey and Gregory packs for years, I think I have a new favourite brand. Looking at larger packs in the line up for multi day excursions.
Got this bag after considering a Hyperlite and Mountain Hardware pack for car-to-car alpine summit pushes. This pack has delivered on what I was looking for: tough, water resistant, can hold mountaineering tools (axe, picket, rope, etc.), and big enough to carry my sizeable 10 essentials. -The zippers are big and easy to pull with gloves on. -Side straps can be added, moved, subtracted based on exterior carrying needs. -Wish it had an exterior rear dump pocket for dropping crampons/microspikes in while they melt and dry out on the hike down. (This is not really a backpacking overnight pack).
I’ve known of MR for a while, and have used their wildland packs with great experiences. I happened to be in Bozeman, MT and went by the headquarters and got to tour the factory and meet some of the crew. I was blown away by the care and quality of their work in person. I ordered the Scree and couldn’t be any happier. Worth every penny and I can’t wait to Get this pack to Machu Picchu in the spring.
Bought this before a recent trip to Wyoming. On the trip I used it as my climbing pack, and hiking pack. This pack did not disappoint and has made me a lifelong Mystery Ranch buyer. Well done Mystery Ranch!!
I lived out of this bag for 6 days while backpacking a Sequoia-Kings canyon 100ish mile loop with no resupply and it worked great. Like everyone else says, it is very comfortable and hold 20 lbs well, as the harness contours to your body with its extra wide 3” shoulder straps. The bag is only 32 liters but fills out nicely, I still had storage even after packing for roughly a week in the high sierras. I got the copper color and I absolutely love it.
I am loading up this Scree 32 pack for a couple of backcountry overnights in the desert. What I like is how it is not too big, comfortable to wear, and fits my 1 person tent, inflatable mattress, stove, cookware, crampons, spare clothes, and plenty of water. The triple zipper is amazing. You don't realize how much you needed it until you have it. I love products that make me want to get out and camp more.
It’s not every day that you can say a pack made literally saved your life. I can however. Two weeks ago I was hiking in starved rock State Park and helping my son wade down a low waterfall. My feet went out from under me and I went down on my back like a cartoon character after stepping on a banana skin. All the other hackers in the area came running, so it must’ve looked really scary. Somehow, my entire body above the bottom of the pack was unharmed. Everything below joined into one giant bruise that formed her full belt around my waist. If I hadn’t been wearing the pack, it would’ve been concussion at least. Lots of other things to love about it, but this was a … unique … experience.
