Old guy converts to zero drop shoes
I am relatively new to zero drop shoes. I’ve endured the typical foot issues and have decided to retrain my feet. Traditional shoes have contributed to my aches and I’m tired of it. I’m optimistic that shoes such as these Ridgeways are going to become my default shoe. So far so good. This is the fourth pair of shoes that I own from Xero shoes. The Ridgeways provide a little more padding which enables me to wear them for long stretches. The roomy toe box is great and I feel plenty of support. I just need to find zero drop court shoes that I can wear while playing tennis.
In the running as the most comfortable shoe I own
I've been looking at these shoes for some time, exclusively on the Xero website. I'm an older guy and focused on buying, only, comfortable shoes. And, yes, I still hike. Even with a discount, they were more expensive on Xero. At the last minute, I did a search (so...this is why the internet was invented!). Found them for less on REI site, a company I often buy from. So, about the shoe. It looks great (not like just a hiking shoe). This is my second foray into the "bare feet" shoe world, so I was a little wary. They fit perfect! So far, I've only used them for medium walks. So far, so good. I'm going hiking over the holidays and looking forward to trying them for the reason I bought them. I am hopeful!
New shoe review
I needed a wider toe box. These fit the bill. For the last year, I’ve been wearing Altras. I feel the the xeros are better built.
Nope!
These were a big miss for me. I guess my forefoot is much wider than average, as these felt narrow, like much more narrow than an Altra Lone Peak. They also immediately felt very warm, like they were not going to breathe at all. But the main killer was the heel counter which rose comfortably high and jabbed me on the right side of the ankle. They do look nice though!
A miss
I have a pair of Xero Hemp Hanas that I really like and even accidentally ended up hiking a few mildly rocky miles in just fine. So I was looking forward to this pair as a replacement for light hiking and casual wear. But thank goodness for the REI return policy because they are the most uncomfortable shoes I’ve worn in a long time. My feet legitimately ached when I’d wear them after just 10–15 minutes and that never changed after a week of trying to break them in. Plus the top of the shoe where the laces are poked into the outside of my ankles. And finally they were quite hot despite the mesh construction. Too bad because they look nice and are especially work well for bicycling. But I think that’s because the outsoles are so stiff which contributes to the discomfort. Ended up ordering a pair of Scrambler Lows direct from Xero since REI didn’t have the color I wanted. They are a night and day difference compared to the Ridgeway Mesh Lows though unfortunately don’t quite match the style.
Good Beginner Barefoot Shoe
Really like these shoes. Thankfully bought them in person for accurate sizing - had to go up 1 full size (11 to a 12) for a proper toe gap and space for Correct Toes. The shoe does have some cushion and a bit of rubber on the bottom for tread, so don't expect a complete barefoot experience. On the other hand, I think this is a good transitional shoe for someone wanting to move completely to a true barefoot shoe (such as myself). I will say, the shoes can get a little warm as they don't seem to breathe as well as you would think they would when looking at the mesh (it is Spring as I write this, so we shall see how they do in the Summer months). I'll be using these mostly for a daily shoe and maybe an occasional walk in the woods. Good buy.
Comfy grippy
Perfect width, soles feel super grippy, like the contrasting tan soles. I’m a size 8 in woman’s and size up to 8.5 in athletic/hiking shoes so went with a 8.5 in these. Wish they would make these in navy blue.
Cheaply Made
Fell apart pretty quick. Having to buy new shoes six months later after normal use.
Not worth your money
Very low quality shoe. The heel cup stitching looks very cheap and low quality material. There is a constant seeping of white shoe glue coming from the welds to the sole. Wipe it off and it just comes back on the next use. Avoid this and personally would recommend avoiding Xero all together.
Comfortable city hiking shoe.
I was looking for a good city walking shoe that was low drop but had enough insole support, plus some waterproofing when it's raining. This shoe has exceeded my expectations, I can walk 5 to 10 miles and my feet still feel comfortable. The treads are not slippery on wet granite sidewalks, curbs and provide great support. These shoes run a little large for size.
