Near miss runner's belt

This stingy runner's belt could have been a really useful piece of gear, but misses the mark, with pockets that are just too small, and some odd design and elements. When you first hold it, it seems like an ultralight waist pack or runner's belt (I use these terms because it has much less storage than a fanny pack, with just a few very slim pockets). However the waist strap has a plastic buckle that is truly large, thick and heavy for a pack that is otherwise so light and svelte. This buckle is serious overkill for this light little pack. As for the pockets, there is a main zippered pocket that is most of the length of the front of the pack. When you open it, there are two unzippered slots and a key lanyard inside. I still have a Samsung Galaxy S9, which is 4.5 years old and smaller/thinner than most of today's phones, and it barely fit (with a lot of effort) in the larger slot. Barely. I have no idea what you'd put in the smaller slot. It's 3.5" x 3.5" and flat. You could put a couple credit cards with some bills in there. There is some space within the main zippered pocket outside of these two slots, but this is also not very useful, as it's pretty slim. Overall, the size of the pack gives the impression that the pockets would have more room and be more useful, but they are not. They are too tight and slim. Next to the main zippered pocket, there is an open-top pocket with a little reflective material. This pocket has some stretch in the top, but no closure. So you could put a pack of tissues in it maybe, but not anything you care about losing. On both ends of the front pockets, there are also openings, which are side-opened pockets. One is about 3" long and the other 10", and they are about 3" high. Again, maybe I'd be willing to put a pack of tissues in those, because if it fell out it wouldn't be a big deal. Otherwise I would not be able to use them. The reflective logo and small piece of material on the smaller front pocket do catch the light well. No one loves pockets more than I do and so I thought I would just love this pack since for a very very small pack, it actually has a lot of pockets/organizing elements. But they are frustratingly sized and placed, either too small/tight, or too insecure. I don't understand what the designers were thinking with these pockets, and with the gigantic clip. Normally I find REI Coop items to be so well made and designed, but this is an exception. That being said, it may suit some people well, depending on what they want to carry and how they use it. I am still trying to make this piece useful. I've used it for a number of walks around the neighborhood, several times running errands, and one short hike. I do not find this useful for even short hikes as it carries very very little and certainly not water. I did find that slinging it over my shoulder and wearing it crossbody was better than on the waist. So if I'm doing something where I want to carry very little and have it in a light pack, I might occasionally use it. It's nice looking and very light (except the buckle). I so wish that the pockets were a little larger and more secure; I think it would be a great pack then.

Good design w/ one critical error

This is a good running belt design, as far as pockets and breathability etc, however the critical failure is that the breathable/stretchy fabric that makes the buckle function stretches out and loosens the belt. I had my phone in this for a 7mi trail run and the up/down motion of the phone-weight with each stride eventually loosened the belt to where I had to tighten it at least 20x while running. I tried it on the back, on the side/hip, and on my front. It worked best positioned on the back because of how tight I had to get it— and the it needed to he tightened over skin, not clothing due to slipping. I won’t use it again, which is a bummer because the size/use of this is perfect for a 5-12mi run without water (which is mostly what I do).

So much storage, and a stable comfortable ride

I needed a good running belt, but I wasn't expecting to like this belt as much as I do. The design is really well thought out and makes good use of space. It has plenty of pockets and nooks, but still feels light on my waist. The strap and backing are a nice mesh material, so I expect they will be as comfortable and breathable as possible once the heat comes. The strap is wide enough to keep the belt very stable, even when I loaded it up with more than it looks like it can fit. It was comfortable road and trail, 0 complaints. It even carried my nanospikes on for a bit when the ice gave way to mud. The main compartment has two inner credit card pockets and a key clip. The zipper is 10 inches. This zipper pocket easily fit my 7in phone, key fob, sound alarm flashlight, and candies. The small side pocket fits my larger sized pepper spray perfectly. And bonus, behind each of those visible pockets is a horizontal pocket area. The smaller is about 3 inches deep, and just fits my Garmin Mini. The larger is about 11 inches deep and nicely fit a pair of gloves or 8 oz soft water bottle. Though, you'll either want clip those items on the little yellow loops, or add a bit of Velcro, since items can dislodge fairly easily from that sideways storage. I'm a size 14/33in waist, so the storage portion of the belt just covered my back. I had plenty of room to adjust (1-3 inches each side to spare, depending on my layers). I don't think this would as fit well for a size 18, a 16 would probably be ok. On smaller sizes, you'll just have more of the pocket portion wrapping around you. But you might not want to put thicker items in the small pocket, as it would interfere with your arm swing. I've been so happy with this little gem that I've used it for every run since it arrived. My poor old buttpack will be looking for a new purpose!

Average waist pack

I received this product from REI trailblazers sampling program in exchange of my honest review. When I received the waist pack I was thrilled with its size and pockets . But when I started using it I realized that it’s not a very functional waistpack. First the pros: 1) nice size 2) front pocket can fit your phone easily. 3) reflective logo 4) belt good size and felt secure. Cons 1) two inside pockets but I don’t know what will they be used for 2) another pocket in front and don’t know what can be stored there. All of the pockets can’t fit a phone except for the zipped one, which isn’t that snug of a fit. Overall the waistpack is just average with a secure fit

Great for short jaunts

This waist pack is great for short jaunts when you don't want to carry a backpack or a backpack would be too much. I used it for a short walk in the snow in which I needed to carry different weight gloves and neck gaiter. I was able to hang my gloves from one of the loops on the side. I have to carry two iPhones (personal and work) and they both fit. I love that it has a clip for the car key - less chance of losing it! I found it easier to wear this bag across my back and front than around my waist. This past weekend I went sledding at Blackwater State Park in West Virginia and it worked great strapped across my back as I was sitting in a sled 90% of the time. I find that it is easy to adjust the length with the pull tabs, even with gloves on. It is a bit cumbersome to tuck the ends of the straps through the stationary keeps; and is a bit easier without gloves. Overall, a nice accessory when you don't want to carry a backpack, but need to stash your step.

A no-brainer to add for your running

This waist pack is awesome. Super low profile and has a great fit. Often when I run I find that short/pants just don't have enough pockets for what needs to come with me. This waist pack allowed me to easily carry my phone, ear buds, keys, credit card and a little TP for those long runs. The pack carries all of this super well and was very comfortable. A must have accesory for around town and long trails.

Great for staying active and packing light!

I received this product for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. I have used many waist bags in my time and this one by far is my favorite for outdoor and fitness activities. Since my smartwatch stopped working, I've needed to depend on my cell phone to track my steps. It's easy to carry around in my pocket day to day, but when I'm hiking and jogging, I'm worried about it falling out or getting damaged. I've tried other lightweight "active" waistbags but they were all uncomfortable in one way or another (wouldn't stay put, didn’t fit my essentials, too tight). This one checked all my requirements: comfortable, lightweight, breatheable, roomy enough to keep my thing in, and subtle and sleek enough to feel like i wasnt being weighed down.

Okay Running Pack, Better Fanny Pack

It’s a pretty okay waistpack. At first, I thought it was strictly used for running but it also comes in really handy while shopping or going to markets. Let’s talk about it as a running pack first. It hugs the body well and is pretty comfortable at first. The buckle is a little large and will dig into your stomach if you’re not super fit. That’s only if you wear it underneath the shirt. Over the shirt, this isn’t much of an issue. Tightening the pack works about 80 percent of the time. The other 20 percent of the time make it noticeable and therefore a little annoying. The pull ends to tighten the pack are also made out of a hard material. The square edge has poked me a few times. Again, not always but enough for me to notice and remember. This could easily be solved by having a rounded pull strap. The zipper pocket is just wide enough to fit my iPhone 14 Pro Max and my keys. I never felt safe enough to use the open pocket for anything. I was too scared it would fall out on my run. I have personally been using the waist pack as more of a “fanny pack” when going out grocery shopping and the like. Because I walk more leisurely, none of the problems above bother me. The space is enough for me keys, wallet, and AirPods to keep my pockets empty of everything except my phone. As I said, it hugs the body well, and wearing it underwear my shirt is barely noticeable. Would make a great secret pocket to stop pickpockets while traveling too!

Perfect

Running Marine Corp marathon next month and needed a pack to carry phone (for metro, finding family, …). Was training with another belt when zipper tore. Bought this and used yesterday. DEFINITE UPGRADE! More room. Comfortable. Fits under my shirt. Interior pocket keeps phone secure. Haven’t tried loops yet to carry shirt or jacket but that’s what they are for. Belt did not slip and stayed snug. I’m close to just buying REI brand gear for running. Couldn’t be happier. One less thing to worry about race day.
