Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

Like the look and style of these boots. The fit was wide and on the large side. I ordered a 9.5 but think a size 9 would be a better fit. Traction was good on muddy rock creek trail, but water seeped in through shoelaces. Overall, a nice-looking boot but not advised for hikes when dry feet are essential. Not waterproof.
I was so excited to get these boots; however, they hurt my ankle bones. I love the look of these boots, and being waterproof, they would have been perfect for my trip to Antarctica. These boots are very comfortable except for one thing: an uncomfortable spot that hits my ankle bone (for reference, I am petite and thin). Right where the tongue is attached, there is a hard knot of material and stitching. That may not have been a big deal except for the fact that it is also positioned right under the rivet for the shoestrings at the ankle (I don't know what they are called but they are the things you wrap the laces around). So, when I tighten the boot around my ankles, it puts pressure on this rivet, which in turn puts pressure on that knot of fabric and stitching, digging into my ankle bone (the right one is worse than the left one), even with thicker wool hiking socks, leaving an indent and red mark. I have tried to "break them in," but the pain is too much, and it doesn't seem to be changing at all. It is possible that this would not hurt another person with more flesh on their ankles or maybe someone who is larger, and their ankle bone would be positioned higher on their ankle. This is why I gave 4 stars; they look great, are comfortable other than this issue, and it might just be the position of my ankle bone, which may not affect others the same way.
As you can see from my photos, I tested these shoes out on all sorts of terrain, from hard surface to rocky trail. TL;DR: these are VERY good shoes but I'll only wear them on hard surfaces from now on. Things I love: the forefront has a big toe box and excellent forefront cushioning. They have a bit of a heel drop, which I like very much. They're waterproof! The comfort level of thse shoes for all day wear is way up there. I have a standing desk, so I'm on my feet all day, and even some of my favorite hiking shoes aren't comfortable when you're not actively moving in them. These are. They're also very comfortable for wearing all day while being active with walking, running, moving things around, etc. The vibram soles are very sturdy and grippy. Full disclosure, I'm not a high top wearer, so I generally don't tighten the upper laces. When I did get in a situation to need the ankle support (more on that soon), they worked very well. Things I'm not super fond of: as you can expect, the waterproofness does limit the breathability of these shoes. I tested them in the winter, and my feet got hot a couple times. Not a huge drawback. In my book, I will only wear these shoes on hard surfaces. They absolutely EXCEL for normal everyday wear (did I mention the forefront cushioning?), but in my opinion and experience, that forefront cushioning made it so I couldn't really feel the terrain. I went on a hike on unstable ground and was constantly fighting to feel my footing. I actually twisted my ankle to the point of injury FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE. For the record, when I put them in high top mode after that, they supported my injured ankle fairly well. I've spent my entire adult life hiking everywhere with low top shoes and I've never injured my ankle before. This one was down to the shoe for me. They fit as expected, and though the wide toe box makes them look a little funny, I still think its a good shoe.
This was my first time trying the Altra Women’s hiking boots and I have to say that I love them. At first they are a little tight to get on and can feel a little stiff but after wearing them for a bit, they fit like a glove. As someone that hikes a lot, I love the all black color with the dark laces. I’m a true 7.5 shoe but went with an 8 in boots and they fit perfectly. The hiking boot has a nice big toe box and the inside cushion starts to conform to your feet instantly, leaving you with one of a kind comfort. The bottom of the shoe has exceptional grip, which really helps in the rain and snow. They are also waterproof, I took them out multiple times in the rain and my feet stayed dry and warm. I can already tell these are going to quickly become my go to hiking boot this season!
I want to give more stars. They are sooo comfortable on my feet. Also love that these are a lower volume boot! The downside is, I took them out for the first time yesterday on mixed terrain, wet, dry, mud, snow, some bushwhacking and postholing. They kept dry inside and my feet loved them, but my ankle bones, however did not. I have skinny ankles, and there is some hard material that digs into my ankle bones. More the left than the right. Loosened em up, but did not relieve the pressure point when on a traverse. Left a red mark on both ankles. So disappointed.
I tested these out on three hikes in exchange for receiving a free pair.. PRO: comfy light weight (11 oz per boot!) truly waterproof CON: hard to put on and off have a longer break-in/adjustment period I liked the feel of these when walking - they seem to have more bounciness than typical boots. I guess one concern would be that they would wear out over time, but they made it more pleasant to hike! I also put these to the test, jumping in mud puddles, and my feet didn't get wet at all. To really test the waterproofness, I put the boots on, then immersed my feet in a bucket while scrubbing off the mud - still dry! The reason for this is a unique feature of the boots - the tongue is attached to the boot by a piece of fabric. This really makes them water proof - no water can seep in through the sides. But, this piece of fabric makes it harder to get the boots on and off, as it's a tighter fit. It also took some getting used to, and rubbed on my foot while I adjusted to it. A pair of boot is about 23 ounces, compared to 31 ounces for my Oboz. So - half a pound saved! I'll have to test these a bit more, but these are a serious contender for weeklong backpacking trips given their weight.
These hiking boots seemed bulky at first glance but once on my feet they were actually quite lightweight for hiking boots. I really like the spacious toe box which has come to be associated with the Altra brand. I thought the space might cause a problem on the descents but it wasn't a problem at all. I wore them on a hike during the rain and my feet stayed dry thankfully due to the GORE-TEX. I did not submerge them in water so not sure how they would hold up in that situation. I also noticed good traction on wet rocks. My preference would be to have the shoelaces be a bit longer as I always double knot my hiking boots and running shoes and these laces were just barely long enough to do so. I also had to be sure to wear crew socks as wearing socks that were any shorter (i.e. ankle socks) would cause some rubbing from the boots on my ankles. Overall very happy with the fit, comfort, traction, and color.
I so wanted these boots to work! As a long time Altra fan, I was excited for a waterproof Goretex boot with great traction, and a little more stability. However, there is a manufactoring defect that sadly makes the shoes unwearable. The way the tongue is attached, it causes a seam to dig in right in front of your inside ankle bone that is excruciating. I did try to tough it out over a mile walk, but it only got worse. This would be prevented (and I may even try to fix it myself) had the stitching been done laying the fabric flat instead of having it stick out towards the ankle. If it weren't for this issue I would give them 5 stars. Otherwise, they have great traction on the ice, and fit my low volume foot much better than the Altra lone peak boots I bought a few years ago. My feet were pretty chilly walking in around 30F temps, but that wasn't a surprise. The black is surprisingly low key for an Altra shoe, and actually looks pretty nice. As predicted for Altra, lots of room in the toe box making them very comfortable. Hopefully they can fix the tongue stitching issue, and if so this would make an awesome boot!
I read through all of the reviews here before heading to my local REI to try this hiker. I am already an Altra trail sneaker fan & know I usually take a 1/2 size up. This is also true for this hiker. A 9 1/2 fits me perfectly and there is plenty of room for my ties to spread naturally. I headed the advice of many reviewers and walked around the shoe dept for 30 min. I felt a little pressure where the lower lace hook hits the inside of my ankle. Not extreme, but concerning for longer wear. I decide to buy these & take them home to wear them inside and going up & down the stairs. The pressure from the lower lace hook became more noticeable. But then I remembered learning the different ways you can lace shoes that best work for your foot and activity! I re-laced the boots so that the laces wouldn’t pull the hooks against my ankles (see photos) After wearing the boots in my house for another 2 hours to test the new lacing, the ankle hot spots were gone! I’m so happy this is a great solution! This boot is a beautiful design and color combo + waterproof AND lightweight! Everything I want in a travel hiking boot. These will be coming with me to Peru in a week! I’ll try to give another review after my trip.
Right out of the box, I noticed that these were extremely lightweight. They didn't require a break-in period and are extremely comfortable to wear. The size was accurate and I love the larger toe box. I hate my toes being scrunched and with these I am able to wear a heavier sock. The memory foam quality of the foot pad and around the ankles is very nice. Being a Gore-Tex product means that I can wear them in all types of weather. We recently received an incredible amount of rain here in Southern California and the hiking trails are full of puddles and very muddy. The thick tread of the bottom kept me from slipping in the mud and the Gore-Tex kept my feet dry. In one of my photos, you can see how muddy the trails were and how my friend, who was not wearing proper footwear, got her shoe stuck in the mud. I had no problem on the slick muddy trails in my Altra Tmps. I've logged about 20 miles of hiking in these boots so far and they've been great! These are now my go-to hiking boot! I received this free product in exchange for an honest review.
