I was quite intrigued by thew Cloudhorizon waterproof hiking shoes for many resons. I have recently purchased another pair of their shoes and found them to be comfortable. Being a scout leader I have been leading many hikes through NY's Harriman Parks. Recently I have been doing a lot of florida hiking in cypress domes, mangrove islands, and watershed areas. Additionally being a florida master naturalist and boat captain, I bring many people to nearby islands to search for seashells. I have not taken these shoes off since I got them. I wear them every day on the boats, on the beach, in the mangroves, and in the surf. After my first dry foot day of boating with them, I was amazed and the waterproof and comfort. On the beach, they are so comfortable and protect against mangrove roots and sharp shells.
I have to say that I really liked these shoes. I took them on a 30 mile backpacking trip in Arkansas straight out of the box and they held up well. I was in and out of water all day with them and they were quick to dry, comfortable, and lightweight. The second day of the trip I hiked 23 miles in them with no blisters or sores. A few times I wished for a little more ankle support for backpacking but I think for day hiking these are a great shoe.
Fun color, great traction (except on ice), and comfortable for almost any adventure you could throw at them. Slushy snow, no problem. Loose gravel, no problem. Your dirt trail ends up being paved, that works too. I wouldn't want to run a marathon in these, but these shoes worked great for a day hike, a trail run, and even a quick run on a few miles of paved trail. They have the right balance of waterproof without being too hot and the right amount of cushion balanced with enough stability to be comfortable on loose footing. The only area where they weren't perfect was when the trail got icy. They were better than most shoes, but I could have used traction cleats. Overall a great shoe for any adventure! Color - I was worried that the color was too bright and would show scuffs and marks. After weeks of hikes and runs, they still look great.
Pros: First I like the really cool color option. Light weight design. The insole fit was good. Used it for couple of hikes so far and the grip is nice over rocks. Have not tested the waterproof quality yet, but the upper fabric feels nice like GoreTex material. Cons: More of personal preference, the laces were bit longer than my preference. The undersole design pattern with airy holes looks cool, but inconvenient to clean after a walk in mud. This is not a trail runner and heel to toe drop is big on higher side.
First Impressions are that the shoe is well constructed and supportive. I tend to wear size 11 and this shoe is true to size, perhaps just a tiny bit larger then my average shoe, but not much slippage, so I think in the future I would not size down. The toe box is wide, no toe cramping going on here. The shoe is very comfortable, however, like many waterproof shoes, there is a stiffness to them. I find that the bend at my toe's feels a bit stiff and has yet to soften up. The shoe seems to be a bit wider then the average running shoe As like many middle aged men I tend to have calf pain/injuries more frequently. I have been very pleased that with these shoes I am not feeling pain or strain in my calves. There is a bit of heal drop, combined with a well constructed heel cup and good cushion to absorb force in the heel which tends to help people like me have less calf strain. So I would say this is a good shoe for those with similar calf issues The laces don't have as many options to adjust and the laces are pretty strange in that they are very thin, so when you tighten up the shoe these thin, cord like laces can put focal pressue on your foot. Nothing to painful, but I am strangely aware of the force not being distributed like you would in a more broad, flat lace. I have gone on about 8 runs with these shoes and like the cushion and support. I have also used these to work in all day. Running through dewy grass have not have wetness penetrate into my socks, so the goretex superficially seems to work, but have done a rain run or through big puddles yet. I tend to be on my feet for 8 hours straight at work and have been equally pleased with how my feet feel at the end of the day. The On design is a bit bizarre for my tastes, but the show has been nice to run in, so I can will adjust.
Perfect hiking shoe when boots are too heavy for your hike. They have great waterproof performance, while being pretty breathable and obviously very comfortable. Not the best for mountain hiking due to stiff ankle collars. The ankle collar digs into your ankles when walking over boulders and uneven surfaces. I broke them in doing the Blood Mountan loop and loved them! Perfect Florida shoe when you have to go out in the pouring rain constantly.
I bought these shoes a little over a month ago. Really comfortable, have had a lot of compliments on their look, and great waterproofing. That being said they started squeaking like clown shoes. Wet or dry and doesn't matter the surface I'm walking on, and they literally sound like a dog's squeaky toy every time I take a step. I really don't know if I can wear them anymore, they are so loud. I had a friend last weekend demand that I switch shoes they are so loud and annoying. I'm the kind of person that never returns anything, but honestly On can't sell these shoes and should be recalling them. It's ridiculous.
These shoes have been great!! I have 4 or 5 pairs of ON that i have had prior to this pair. Some have been great and others i havent cared for. To start with the good. These shoes have been extremely comfortable for running, jogging, and day to day. I am impressed they still look as good as they do given what they have been through but even with hevy mud they rinse right off and and keep going. Running in rain i havent had even an inkling that they were leaking outaide of what came in through the top. My feet dont require a lot of modification from most shoes. That being said these were on par for comfort for what i would want out of the box. I didnt need to change insoles, etc... i may going down the road but for now they habe been great!! Cons: the only down side that i have to these is that they get pretty tosty if its not cool/raining. What i would expect from a waterproof shoe but i can see them being uncomfortable hot in hill country TX in the next few months. Overall if you like other shoes were great for me and i wouldnt hesitate to get another pair.
I received these and took them to White Sands NP. Since they are waterproof they are on the warmer side, but did great at keeping sand out of my socks. The downside is that sand and dirt just gets lodged in the sole holes. They are very comfortable and were great for the several hours we walked the park and dunes. The sole is very grippy and has been great at parks and hiking. I have been wearing them for about a month and as other reviews have said they do squeak a lot. They run on the bigger side, but not enough to size down or wear double socks.
First the upside: They are the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. The downsides: After wearing them for 2 months (mostly at work at my retail job) the grippy nubs on about 50% of the sole of each shoe have worn down and they are VERY slick now. THE SQUEAK!!! About a month into wearing them they began squeaking like a dog toy. Here-and-there at first, then more, and now constantly. Apparently this is a known issue with them as I've looked it up online. There are several "fixes" out there: using oil in the holes, using baby powder in the holes, sanding inside the holes, etc. I've tried them all, and the squeak comes back. I have never spent $200 on shoes before, but was happy to do so when I felt the comfort. Now I've owned them for 3 months and I'm switching back to my less comfortable old shoes because I just can't take the squeak. Plus... I recommended these to friends when I still liked them, and several that bought them are having similar issues, and also a few have had their soles start to detach from the shoe... After only 1 - 2 months. They're mad I recommended them. They're tired of the sqeaking. And now I'm the butt of so many jokes just because of these worthless shoes.
