Great Shoes, but Not Great for My Foot Shape

This is a review of the Cloudrunner 2 running shoes by the Swiss company On. I’m relatively new to serious running, and during the two weeks I was testing these, I ran mostly 4- to 6-mile easy runs, a couple of race-pace repeats, and a hill repeat. These shoes were good for easy to moderate pace, but they didn't have the spring of a race shoe, and that's absolutely okay for what they are. I’ll start with stability, since that was my favorite part of these shoes. Each stride felt planted and secure, moving from heel strike through to push off. I’m sure this has to do with the shoe’s splayed heel, wide sole (especially around the forefoot) and secure uppers. The shoes made me feel confident. I also liked the fit of the toe box. I like a little room up in front, and these shoes provided that. I don’t ever want that room to come at the cost of looseness around the forefoot, and that was not a problem here. The shoes were secure across the mid and top, but my toes never felt scrunched or jammed at any point. The cushion in the sole was also just right for me. I don’t like to feel like I’m running on balloons, and these gave me a lot of feedback from the ground while providing enough cushion to soften the impact--it felt firm without jarring. The drawback of these shoes for me has everything to do with the shape of my foot. When measured, my feet are right between a narrow fit and a regular. Because of this, I’ve found that some brands work better than others for my foot shape. I was able to lace these shoes snuggly around my foot (some regular sizes slip around when I turn, but not these), but it meant that the fabric at the bottom of the laces had to fold over itself. Sometimes this isn’t a big deal, but with these shoes, that folded fabric started to dig into the top of my foot. I really felt it on longer runs especially. So in summary, these are great shoes that just didn’t work for me. If you have a regular to wide foot, you may find that they’re perfect for you.

*I received these shoes for free in exchange for an honest review.* First impressions: These are very well-made shoes. Materials feel high quality and stitching inside and out is neat and tidy -- gives the impression that these will likely be more durable than most. I do worry a bit about the soles, which are foam with a layer of rubber glued to parts of the bottom, as I've seen rubber like this peel off of shoes from other brands. Time will tell. When first trying them on the immediate reaction is that they are CUSHY -- they earn the "cloudrunner" name with a very soft feel. I've got a pair of Hoka Recovery Slides, and these feel softer than those. Walking: I put in a few miles of walking on city streets with a backpack, and found that the softness is initially nice for this use. But over a long distance it ended up being bad for my feet overall. With such a springy sole, my foot was free to twist a bit with each step (a problem I've spent time correcting), and the result was sore knees after my long walk. So while it saved some soreness in my feet, the cushioning was too much and caused pain elsewhere. Running: These are running shoes after all, so I put in a few miles running on pavement as well. Here the cushion feels less like walking on a cloud, but more like running on slightly springy ground. The closest thing I can think of might be the rubberized surface at a playground. Each stride sinks in a bit and bounces back out. As with walking, for the first part of the outing this was quite nice - no pain while running on a hard surface. But by the end of the first mile I was annoyed by the sensation. The cushion saps a bit of energy from each stride, almost like running on sand. Verdict: I think these are very niche shoes -- if your main concern is to cushion yourself from hard surfaces, and you don't have any gait issues, and you don't mind losing some energy to the cushion, these are the shoe for you as they are so well made. But I think many people may have some issue with these on longer outings. I strongly recommend trying these on and giving them a real test before purchase. The initial impression is likely to sway many because they do feel very comfortable out of the box, but you may find that it solves one issue while causing others.

Great shoes!

Great shoes! I've taken these for a bunch of runs and walks around my (urban) neighborhood. They feel great. Well-cushioned without being overly bulky, it feels like the shape of the shoes naturally propels me into each stride. I typically wear Nike shoes, and these run a tiny bit large compared to those. I like the design aesthetically too.

Great running shoes with excellent cushion

These are amazing running shoes. Out of the box, they feel like a glove. They are extremely comfortable with an excellent amount of cushion. The design of the fabric prevents my feet from feeling too hot while exercising. They have shoelaces that stay in place without having to tie double knots. I love the reflective accents on the shoes which are helpful for evening running. I have used these for over 10 miles of exercise at the gym and on the pavement and they are worth it.

REI Offered Me These For A Free Product Review

These shows are extremely comfortable, without sacrificing long term quality. The On Men's Cloudrunner 2 are sleek, comfortable and sturdy. They can easily be used for road running, sidewalk running, or even day to day casual use. The only downside of this shoe is that they are not the most breathable.

All day comfort

Great comfortable shoes. I've spent days on my feet inside and out working in these and haven't been uncomfortable at all. They breath well too which is great as it starts to heat up for summer. I would have liked to have a heel-pull or something to help pull them on but that's the most minor issue I could possibly have with them.

Nice...but not for me

I have been curious about On running shoes for a few years and am glad I was able to try them. The build quality & 'technology' in the shoe is definitely high level but with that said, these just aren't for me. My first impression upon putting these on is that they are VERY accommodating of my feet. Seems like they would fit most foot shapes/sizes/densities. The mid-foot is snug and the toe box is wide without feeling huge. The thing I liked most was the lacing system, I felt like I could dial it in very well to get the shoe snug to my foot. I could see these being a good option for people with trouble finding a shoe that fits them. I ended up using every single eyelet to get the extra bit of snugness I needed. I have a low-medium volume foot so I needed to utilize every bit of the lacing to get these fitting right and was successful. Within the first few steps I could feel a very distinct rebound/assist type feeling from the shoe (the technology.) I imagine this would help some people but I did not like it. I am by no means a zero-drop proponent (to each their own) but the Cloudrunners felt too soft for my liking. After taking these for a couple short runs (<5 miles) I felt some odd foot fatigue that I think comes from having to learn how the shoe works and sort of re-train my stride to work with the shoe - I don't like this. Maybe I'm being a caveman, or just have had bad shoes to this point, but these just felt like overkill. I am mostly an off-road hiker or trail runner and do most of my running in soccer cleats - so it's possible I'm just used to less forgiving shoes. Or maybe the market for the Cloudrunners is more for those that need more forgiveness. To each their own - I'd give these a shot if you're having trouble finding something that fits well or need that extra softness - just not for me. Pros: -Great lacing system - was able to dial it in very quickly for my foot. -Breathable -Lightweight Cons: -Too 'fluffy' worry that they would become less stable as time goes on - The rebound dynamics of the shoe felt like I would need to learn how to run differently to use them - They just feel huge. The soles are nice and soft but to my eye just feel/look like a moon boot. -Worry about the softness wearing out quickly - mostly due to the lightweight feel of these.

Great running shoes

I use the Cloudrunner 2s at the gym to run on the treadmill. Overall they are a great shoe and I will be buying them again. The shoes have a lots of cushion and feel great under foot. I have a tendency to pull my calf muscles when I run but these shoes are doing a great job of preventing injuries. I’ve run more in the last 6 weeks with these shoes than I have in the past 10 years.

Great shoes!

These are the most comfortable shoes I have owned! The cushion on the bottom is very forgiving. The fit is perfect and allows enough room in the toe area and width. The durability is amazing and they through any weather. These have lasted through the rain and mud. Super easy to clean. I highly recommend!

Horrible Customer Service at On Cloud

Left shoe was squeaking day 1. Figure I would try wearing them with the hope it would stop. Nope. Contacted the warranty / support team at On Cloud, with the hope to get a new insole or replacements. They told me it was normal and to wear them more, which by that comment made the shoe unable to be returned. So the advice I was given from the support person made it impossible to return the shoes. So after spending $150 on some shoes, I get to hear squeaks every other step. What Trash!
