Not what I expected from REI. This is my second Trail 25 daypack. The quality of the current Trail 25 pack is patently inferior to the earlier version that I purchased in 2018. The exterior and interior material of the 2024 pack is much flimsier than that of the 2018 pack. I continue to use the 2018 pack for hiking and as a book bag and have loaded it with weighty camera equipment, laptop computers, water bottles, and more. Neither extended use nor weight has diminished the integrity of the 2018 Trail 25 bag one iota. I’d be surprised if the current model is as durable.

Fantastic Bag but not quite perfect.

Fantastic bag that just falls short of 5 stars for me. It’s spacious, well built, comfortable (used it a s a courier bag for the last week) and had an integral rain cover (more on that later). The bag itself is built very well. It started out a bit stiff but settled in well after only a day or two. It has tons of SPACE in its 25 liters. Laid out well and ample space for small items (no dedicated admin area, though but it isn’t that kind of bag). I got back and forth to work with a pair of sneakers, sweat pants, a t shirt, towel and hat. I also had space in the water reservoir pocket to hold my 15” laptop, power supply and mouse. I could have probably crammed more in there, but I didn’t need to. The only issue I really had is, unlike a vintage bike pack I had in the early 2000’s, the rain cover is not attached. It would be AWESOME if it was as it fits in its own little kangaroo pocket and protects the bag well. (Eastern PA “Spring” could be anything at any time). Overall I’d absolutely recommend this pack to my friends. I actually have! Worth it for overnight hikes, 2 day or ,if you pack light, weekend excursions. Go get it!

Great Bag, Gets the Job Done

I liked this bag a lot. I used it on multiple short day hikes and I had no complaints. The bag has water bottle pouches on both sides that stretch enough to fit a full size hydroflask. The main pocket has a sleeve that can fit a laptop or water bladder. There is enough room inside for additional gear and clothes. The inside of the main pocket also contains a smaller zippered pocket. The bag has one additional pocket up top that is smaller and is perfect for snacks or other items that require easy access. The bag also comes with a rain cover that is concealed near the bottom. The straps are adjustable and include a chest strap and a hip strap. I had only two concerns with this bag. The hip straps are very thin. They help stabilize the bag, but they do not appear designed to support heavy weight on the hips. My other concern is the carry handle on top of the bag. It isn't very thick or reinforced. I hope it doesn't break after long term use. Overall this bag is great for day use. It is not enough for an overnight backpacking trip, at least not for me, but for day hikes it is perfect.

Good All-Around Day Pack

Big enough for a full day supplies, but not too big. I have the 40L pack (an older model) and this one is slimmed down in multiple ways, leaving it lighter but with fewer pockets and features, but still plenty for a day hike. The shoulder straps are well padded and comfy - almost too big for a light pack. The hip strap, on the other hand, is very simple with no padding - just 1" webbing. I have the extended size, and I like the extra long pieces of webbing in the chest strap, the waist strap and shoulder straps. I found the top inner mesh pocket helpful in my old pack, but the front flap had to be flopped down before it was upright. In this model, they've flipped the zipper so that pocket is up when the pack is up - a much more sensible design. I love having a rain cover included in the bottom pocket, so I can forget about it until I need it. This version has two water bottle pockets on the outside, both reinforced on the bottom, an improvement on my older pack where they were entirely mesh and vulnerable to tearing. I like the inside water bottle pocket, especially for air travel, when I want to be sure I don't drop my bottle. I really like the oak brown color.

I wanted to love this bag...

...but for me it just fell short. It was not very comfortable for me and sat weird on my body.I always like packs that have chest and belt straps, but the belt strap on this pack was thin and just dug into me. Second, there are not a lot of pockets, which I was disappointed about. I like to have more spots to put things so tht I do not have to go digging around one large pocket. I did, however, appreciate the included rain cover. It was easy to find and put on.

The straps are a game changer- so comfortable!

I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review: Finding the right pack can be difficult because every body is built differently and depending on the season what you need to pack also goes into consideration. With that said I have never thought of extended size bags but now I might go to them first because the shoulder straps are wider and SO COMFORTABLE!! I have broad shoulders and never considered extended size bags as having a different shoulder strap but this is a game changer. Took this on a 3+ mile hike and I didn’t need to readjust once or find any rubbing spots. The extra length makes tightening the pack easier to adjust as needed when adding/removing layers during colder weather hikes. The compartments are well thought out and buckles are super convenient to use. While I do like the color, I tend to lean toward brighter packs to find them easier in the woods.

Vibrant Blue Day Hikes

Note: this is a review of the Shadow Bay color way, which I highly recommend as a vibrant, turquoise blue. Wore this personally (5’8) and shared (6’2) for local day hikes and urban dog walking jaunts around town with much success. It is a sort of “high and tight” fit which is just what I want for a daypack — I can imagine taking this on longer, full day trips with 2-3 liters of water, snacks, and layers without a hitch. In the meantime, it’s comfortable, functional, and comes with all of the necessary bells and whistles you might expect from this sort of pack — plenty of carabiner configurations and a rain fly zippered into the bottom. It’s not exactly full on sweaty season yet so I can’t vouch for the breathability factor.

Versatile and virtually indestructible

I've had this pack since 2018 (the older model, obviously!) and it has gone everywhere, done everything, and looked good doing it. This 25L has backpacked across Europe, been shoved ahead of me through cave crawls, day-hiked, been a train pillow, a plane personal item, a stool, etc. I've abused it. I stuffed it full to bursting too many times to count, wrenched zippers closed against the odds, and carried all manner of poky items. It is a survivor. The only damage I've been able to do was forget a pencil in the water bottle mesh and poke a hole. Otherwise, everything comes out in the wash. I will wear this little backpack when I die and go to heaven.

Get it

I loooove this bag! Even convinced two of my friends to buy it. I have had it for a couple years now and sent it through A LOT. Poor thing has been pulled, thrown, and played with by cats. No seams have ripped and the quality is still amazing. It takes on water pretty well! Dirt easily comes off with a wipe. I am 5'5 190lbs and the S-XL is more than enough. The straps fit extremely comfortable with my broader/bigger shoulders. I have taken this on 12 mile hikes - it remained extremely comfy. The weight distribution on this is a miracle - because I pack it to the brim - and it somehow manages to still be super light. To a point that two of my friends have purchased. I always get complimented on it, so highly recommend!

Great little pack, little bit short.

Have taken this pack on some day hikes and used as a bag around town so far - It's great on hikes for carrying water, snacks, and food and it feels really well built, but it's a little short for folks with longer torsos like myself and it doesn't do great when loaded with weight (two full bottles + first load kit and lunch felt close to the limit of comfort, same with a laptop, charger, and a few books). The straps are very plush and feel nice, but I wish the hip straps had pockets for some easy access storage. the biggest comfort limitation for me was how short it is and how awkward it feels to use the hip strap as a result, but I'm placing to use it for light loads on day hikes and it's perfect for that!
