Great Helmet with MIPS protection!

This is a really nice helmet for skiing and snowboarding. Sizing - Received this helmet in a medium and the fit is perfect minus one negative. I am at the top of a medium size and feel like large helmets fit only with the use of a beanie. The issue with the medium is that there doesn't seem to be room for beanie, only reason for 4 vs 5 stars. That said, this helmet provides enough warmth that a beanie doesn't seem necessary. Overall I am happy with the size as it provides all day comfort without feeling like you want to take it off between runs. Fit and Finish - Quality of the helmet is great. Everything seems well made from the shell to all the padding and straps. There is plenty of adjustability in the chin strap but the self adjusting strap for head circumference is icing on the cake. Previous helmets alway had a dial to adjust which could mean too loose or too tight. The Method just fits every time. What I love the most about the construction is the higher cut out for googles. My previous helmet would push my large lense goggles down on the bridge of my nose, more often than not I didn't use goggles due to this issue. The Method allows the use of a larger frame without the added pressure. I don't see myself needing to take my goggles off during a lift ride or run down the mountain. Safety - The Method has Mips Safety protection. I won't bore you with the details as you can read up on this through a number of sources. The added protection provides me with the confidence the inevitable falls throughout the day will allow me to go home to my family TBI free. Overall, the Method helmet looks and fits great which is key to ensuring it remains on your head and not in your bag throughout the day.

Low quality, poor adjustability
Anthony

Overall, feels pretty cheap. I wish I'd got something different. This is my second Smith helmet the previous had the strap fail because it was held on by a tiny rubberband instead of a sewn-in stop. Anyways, against my better judgement, I buy another Smith. I spent the last 15 minutes trying to figure out where the size adjustment is. Their site and Youtube videos don't help (top comments are unanswered asking how to adjust). Finally realize where the adjustment "slots" are hidden where the back plastic strap attaches. Feels like you're going to break it when you adjust it. Same is true for the removable ear pads. My last Smith helmet was a small size and so I got this one in small, but it's noticeably tighter even when fully adjusted out. Finally, on the middle of earpad section there is a little strap with soft velcro that attaches to nothing, on the reverse of that was a tiny little oval of grippy velcro *glued on*. This is obviously a design or manufacturing mistake that they did a cheap fix for. The oval of course fell off the first time I removed the earpads. This is total entry level quality for a mid-level price. Smith just doesn't make good stuff, IMO. I will try Giro next time.

Lightweight and Comfortable

I love this helmet!!! First of all, I’ve got a huge melon. My hat size is 7 3/4. I have never found a snowboarding helmet that fits me well. This helmet in XL fits perfectly! The helmet is also lightweight, very stable, and strong. My first time out, I wore it all day in windy subzero temperatures. My head stayed toasty warm and there were no uncomfortable hotspots. The ear covers unzip for headphones and the helmet allowed me to use my off brand goggles without any issues. I would highly recommend this helmet!

Good simple MIPS helmet

Got this helmet in a large, which is my typical size. The fit out of the box is perfect for me, didn’t even need to change the strap. That’s convenient, because there isn’t actually much adjusting you can do. There is an elastic band that sits low on the back on the head that cinches everything up. It worked well for me, but other helmets I’d used on the past had quick adjustments that i did change through the day. If you like to fiddle, the auto may not be ideal. The helmet has fixed vents that work well. I tested this in about 10 degree F and 30 degree F weather. For the 30 degree day I left it stock and everything breathed well while staying warm enough. On the colder day, there are two flaps you can fold to block the front vents. I liked this when moving at a decent pace, you get less airflow and less cooling. Easy to manipulate the flap, but its fabric so long term durability might be questionable. This is very much on the keep it simple design philosophy. I took photos of this flap open and closed. The majority of the helmet is foam but they used strategic placement of Koroyd (plastic honeycomb) to provide a crumple zone and airflow. I have this in my bicycle helmet too and it’s held up well. In a crash it will deform hopefully acting like a car crumple zone and absorbing energy. I used this with Smith and non-Smith goggles. The Smith that I used are on the lower end of their line (don’t remember name but they were under $50) and still worked well. Fit was fine and I had no fogging. The non-Smith goggles also didn’t had any issues. Fit wasn’t perfect but I’d never notice if it wasn’t for lense color. The strap retainer is a simple clip, but it works. I don’t have an audio system but this helmet is ready for one. There’s a zipper pocket in the ear padding that will hold everything. Overall this is a solid entry-mid tier helmet. I will knock one point down due to the lack of adjustability.

Solid snow helmet with Mips

I received this product for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. Smith Method MIPS Snow Helmet (Size M) in Matte Black My head is right between the Size S and M, so I went up. For the size chart, see attached photo or it’s also available on the Smith web site. The helmet doesn’t come with clear information about how to fit it or the features so make sure to read what is available on the web description. The helmet itself is very comfortable, especially with the ear pads (feels cozy and soft) clipped in, but it pushes my (not Smith) goggles down my face more than I would like. I’d suggest either buying Smith goggles or making sure to try your goggles with the helmet to ensure compatibility. The default fit appears to be in the middle. It has little knobs on the sides and back that push into holes on the interior of the helmet; go out to make smaller and in to make it larger. It’s fairly comfortable with little movement in all of the positions, but I found that to get the best fit with my goggles, I had to go with the smallest fit which also made sense since I’m on the smallest end of the size range for the medium. I felt like I was going to tear the helmet up by pulling the knobs out, but once I started doing it, I didn’t have any issues. I appreciate the variety of colors available and I’d definitely go for Matte Glacier or Matte Chalk Rose if I was getting another one. The Matte Black has a smooth finish, but I’m a little concerned that it’s going to show scratches more as I use it. I’m not buying helmets (bike, skate, snow) without “Mips” anymore. For safety and comfort, I’d go for this helmet.

Husband approves

My husband really likes the fit of this helmet. He said it is snug without feeling tight, his ears don’t feel smashed and they work well with his goggles. The helmet is warm so no extra layer needed, which helps with breathability. He hasn’t been able to try it in warmer conditions to see if it gets hot but there are vents on the top. The helmet has a good style to it; basic, but not boring, which is what he wants from a protective piece of equipment. Bonus points for having the MIPS system for extra protection. The helmet feels solid without being heavy.

Making Helmets Cool

This helmet made me become a safer person. I wasn't a helmet person till I got this helmet. I like that it's lightweight and comfortable. The matte black finish is also appealing. It's well engineered and though out from the clip on the back to keep your goggles in place to the insulated ear pads thats keep your ears warm. I also like the fact that it has the Mips system. Wearing this helmet has made me safer and more confident while snowboarding. I highly recommend this helmet if you're in the market.

Sleek and comfortable

The hemelt is sleek, comfortable, and lightweight. It has padding inside to keep ears warm during winter sports as well as keep the head safe. Loved the additional padding around the chin straps. Waiting for snow so we can try it snowboarding.

Decent base model Mips Helmet

I received this product for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. The Smith Method Mips Snow Helmet is a very nice helmet. It is beautifully constructed, extremely light weight, and very comfortable. It has optional features such as to add in bluetooth audio, for additional purchase of course. Plus, the new look with less visible air vents is the new cool trendy style people are sporting on the slopes now. With all that said, I am not in love with the way you would adjust the fit in this helmet. I wished they had a the BOA lacing system like they do in many of their other helmets. The size adjustment system in this particular helmet is not the easiest nor does it give as much optional tolerances as the BOA systems do. Most importantly I guess I am one of the few that finds this helmet to fit small. I triple check the Smith circumference guide and I also own other Smith helmets. This model runs small. Lastly, if you are looking to buy this helmet, make sure you but the Mips version because apparent you can buy a non-Mips version of the Method helmet for 30 bucks less.

Good but difficult to adjust sizing

I received thus product for free from the REI sampling program in exchange for my honest review. Great helmet, very comfortable. Used on a particular wet day and kept me warm and dry. Compatible with balaclava. Small range of adjustments available but not easy to adjust. The way to make adjustments to tighten/loosen feels like you're going to break the connecting band. I wish it had the straight forward crank system because on days when I don't want balaclava I might want it tighter but it's too much trouble and feels risky to change often.

Keep your brain safe and your ears warm!

It was a frigid January morning when I donned my Smith Method Mips Snow Helmet for a winter fat bike race. The temperatures were even colder with the wind but my head was toasty warm with just a thin wool skullcap under the helmet. Mips kept me confident and reassured as zipping along the winter trails at speed. The ear covers were warm. They were also easily removed and stowed when my head warmed up enough not to need them. Solidly built and easily adjusted to fit comfortably. A must have for your next winter adventure. Safe and secure!
