The last time I'd tried a Salomon running shoe had been to demo them for a Trail Ragnar relay several years ago (and I didn't love them enough to buy them) so I was very interested to try out one of their newest pairs, which features much more cushioning. I've taken my pair out for a 6 mile hike/run (see photos) in a local forest with varied terrain and then later on a 3 mile run on asphalt to see how they'd perform. PROs: - Perfect amount of support and comfort. Despite the thick midsole design making these looking clunky, they do feel light in motion and have good structure to them on uneven surfaces - Interior is relatively seamless with a roomy toe box so I've had no issues blisters or rubbing even when running in warm conditions - Multi-directional treads that provide grip for both forward and lateral movement but aren't too grooved that pebbles would get stuck in them. I had no issues on loose gravel or scrambling. They were grippy enough to even climb a tree in but not too high that it felt stilted to run on concrete in - 4mm drop is perfect for my midfoot gait so I don't feel too elevated nor too flat footed - I'm usually a size 7 or 7.5, and the 7.5 in these was perfect to ensure my feet could expand on my run CONS: - I have mixed feelings about the Quicklace system that Salomon has instead of standard shoe laces. While it does relieve the need to tie and untie one's shoes, the string is so long that (as you can see in my photo) I had to loop the excess through the laces lower on the tongue before tucking the connector back up into the pocket. The pocket was too small with the opening too cramped between the laces that I just couldn't tuck it all into the pocket - The color selections are honestly kind of ugly and hard to match with. Plus, the grey option will look dirty after hitting the trail once, the black (which I have) very much looks dusty already, and the green one is just strange swamp green combination All in all, these are well-constructed shoes that were easy to break in so I'll likely trade off between these and my usual trail shoes
I had to look up a YouTube video to figure out how to use the shoelace system but once I sorted that out, these shoes are great. I haven’t actually used the shoelace system correctly yet but apparently you’re supposed to tuck the extra length into the mesh. The shoes are not waterproof and therefore more breathable than my previous trail running shoes (Nike Pegasus Goretex). They also are more grippy on grass than my previous shoe. They are a good lightweight so that I’m not thinking about them. I mainly use them for grass volleyball and they work great for that. I took them on a short trail run once and had no issues with grip on a short downhill dirt section. Would like to test them on muddier trails and a longer trail next!
Overall I found these sneakers to be very comfortable. The sneakers did run slightly larger than my regular size so I would recommend ordering a size down. The Thundercross had great support but are also very lightweight and waterproof. The traction treads on the bottom gave a stable feel and I am looking forward to taking them on the trails in the fall!
So I have mixed opinions on these shoes. At first I was unsure of the color scheme, however the colors have since grown on me. These shoes are a bit narrow in the mid foot region, which lead to some rubbing and discomfort in my arch when I would wear them. Like most shoes I tried walking around the neighborhood with them first. During that first walk I got the worst blisters, leaving me unable to wear them for a week. This was better by the second use however the ankle still rubbed a bit. The second time I wore these I went on a run, they weren’t bad but they were nothing special. I didn’t like the narrow draw string laces. I couldn’t get them to tighten in the ways I wanted them. The shoe did stretch out a bit during this run making it a bit more comfortable. Overall this shoe is probs great if you have narrow feet. It’s super light weight which was nice, just not meant for my feet. I can see my self using these more as a walking shoe than a trail running shoe.
Overall I found these shoes to be fairly comfortable. The good: I found they had good traction and the waterproof coating came up high enough to keep my feet dry through a couple of puddles and stream crossings. The soles are quite rigid so I didn't have any discomfort from rocks or uneven ground. I enjoyed the novelty of the quick lace system to put the shoes on and take them off in a matter of seconds. The bad: the laces are unnecessarily long I had to feed them all the way through to the bottom and back up to the top to get rid of all the extra. This unfortunately takes away the benefit of the quick lace system and ended up taking me longer than just tying regular laces would. Once they were in they seemed secure and I didn't have any issues. My other concern with these shoes is I developed a bit of a hot spot near the ball of my foot where the laces start this could just be an issue with the shoes needing to be broken in a little more but does make me hesitant on wearing them for longer adventures.
This is a great starter shoe for anyone looking to get into trail running or hiking! Pros: - Great traction, but not to the point that it makes it sticky running on pavement. (Great midpoint) - Shoes feel lightweight and don't have a ton of cushioning- you can feel the ground (can be a pro or con depending on your preferences) - Feel super stable - Laces are speedy to put on - Toe box is very wide Cons: - Not a ton of cushioning, if you like more support I would try another shoe. - Shoes run very big. I am typically a size 9.5 but even a 9.0 in these was too big- I recommend ordering a size or two smaller unless you like extra toe room. Toe box being wide could be a pro or con depending on your preferences. - Laces are suuuuper long but can be tucked in strategically Overall I was pretty happy with these shoes and will use them as a casual trainer and hiker!
Overall rating 4.5 stars. I use these for running steep hilly muddy trails and they’re great. I have short wide feet/stubby toes with high arches and size 8.5 in most shoes works best for my foot shape. These feel great in the heel with nice padding, and plenty of room in toe box—my short toes don’t go numb! I don’t usually like speed lacing because I can’t tailor the fit, but the fabric on these shoes works with the speed lacing. Though these are “maximally cushioned,” the cushioning is firmer than I prefer. The 5mm lugs are perfect for deep mud and rough terrain but also feel good on more groomed trails. I haven’t tried them on pavement yet.
I bought the gore tex version for every day walking/hiking in the rainy PNW weather. My feet didn't get wet all winter. These have enough cushion for my bad knee, plenty of room in the toe, and solid treads for slippery trails. I bought the non gore tex version for dryer months. I have a medium width foot and was looking for something sturdy, besides Hokas with a bit of cushion, that's not so wide in the sole. For me, Salomon's fit better than any other brand and are of great quality. I'm counting on these to carry me well on spring hikes in the Azores! More review later maybe... Also would like to see more neutral colors in running shoes.
I just took my new Thundercrosses for a 13 mile trail run and I don’t have a single blister. The ride is smooth and traction is amazing! I ran through mud, over rocks and roots, climbs, descents, single track and more… and my feet flew. Without the worry of slipping or tripping, I reached a pace that normally I can’t get on mountain trails! Highly recommend. If I could name one critique of this shoe, it would be that I’d like a little more cushion in the heel cup, and a little higher drop. I may try out another Salomon for my next pair, but I will keep Thundercross in my collection for technical trail runs, especially in wet slippery conditions!
This is my first pair of Salomon shoes! They have the right amount of cushion and a decently roomy toe box. They have just the right amount of grip to get up a slippery or sandy incline. Plus they don't hold onto the mud and dirt! Way less messy than some of my other trail running shoes that need to be cleaned a bit before heading inside or hopping in a car. There was no break in time. I wore these right away and enjoyed a 1 mi trail hike/run. I'll definitely be trying more Salomon shoes!
