Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

I’m a loyal Altra Superior wearer since the beginning, and this new iteration #6 has got to be the worst. Ok “customer care/development team” do you really pay attention and address your loyal following? For the last two iterations the shoe has become narrower, even men’s … the colors are a sincere joke (not everyone wants to wear a shoe that looks like the Easter bunny threw up) the materials used and replaced… are no longer as rugged and sturdy as the last several iterations…. It’s downright annoying and depressing. Shoe brands like Vivo/Xero are winning your faithful over… get back to basics, that’s the key to getting back on track and remaining loyal to your core supports.
I own 3 pair of Astra Superior 5s, I went into try on some of the new Superior 6 shoes. There is a new seam on the outside of the shoe at the placement of the knuckles of the toes, at the end of the toe box where the lacing starts. The seam is very restrictive and caused the shoe to squeeze my foot to the point of light pain. I tried a few different shoes and two different sizes to try to mediate this issue. No Good! Painful shoe now that it has this added seam. I'm sure it was to increase the structure/stability of the shoe, but I can no longer wear my favorite Altras. :(
Unfortunately I had to return. I've been hiking in Altra Superiors for several years now - I just got another pair whenever they went on sale and never had a problem until the 8s. They suddenly and completely changed the shoe. It is very tight across the top of my foot around the knuckles to the point where my toes were falling asleep and the toe box is narrower than 7s and older. My toe knuckles were sore after just a couple miles. I stopped in a running store seeking an alternate and learned that Altra was bought out a couple years ago and have been redesigning, but seem to be responsive to all the negative customer feedback. Hoping the 9s go back to the old fit... otherwise I'll be reluctantly looking for a new brand.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I like the design/style and color. It fits decent but because of the shape it feels a bit snug in the toes. I wish there would be more cushion, they feel a bit stiff. For walking these are fine and comfortable but when I run in them it's a different story, not much padding ends up hurting my feet.
I’ve worn the Superior 5’s for hundreds of miles of hiking and backpacking and loved them so much. These are not the same. The heel fits much different, they’re tighter in the toes, and feel too shallow. Not even close to the same shoe. They might work for some people, but if you’re looking for something to replace the 5’s, these are not it.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love to run on treadmills as well as outdoors, these shoes are super comfortable and make running so much easier for me, the width is perfect and the style is super cute as well. Definitely recommend these to anyone looking for a comfortable and stylish shoe to workout in.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have the Escalante 3, the Solstice XT 2, and now the Superior 6. I love each of them for different reasons. These fit slightly smaller than the Escalante or the Solstice in the same size (I'm usually an 8 across the board). I can definitely run in them, but I might size up a half size especially if I were wearing thicker/merino wool socks. They are light and have excellent tread. The zero drop is perfect for an aspiring barefoot-shoe-wearer like me. They have a decent amount of cushion, but still allow for ground feel. I received mine in exchange for an honest review, but I would absolutely buy them again both for hiking and trail running.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have been used this shoes for a while and let me tell you that if you have bunions you have to buy them they are very comfortable and enough space for your bunion you can have long walks and no pain
This is my 3rd pair. I always get size 7. They were so narrow and uncomfortable. They must have drastically changed the fitting. I like this brand because they run more wide or you were able to get them in wide. No more. I ordered in a size 7.5. Much wider, but don’t fit properly. Very disappointing.
Why do shoe companies change shoes when they have a loyal fan base? There's a reason why people continue to buy their shoes, but when they keep changing them and there are increasingly more options that are offering large tow box and zero drop, they are going to lose their base. If people, love the shoes then why change them? Superiors used to be low profile like Xero shoes but now they just seem like a regular road shoe. I loved feeling like I wasn't wearing hardly anything on the trails and I'm holding onto an early pair of Superiors! Also, make us colors for nature! These are trail shoes for God sakes.
