With Toyota Prius Prime
So far so good(5 months in) Can only open one side at a time. It fits my Toyota Prius Prime very well! It’s all weather proof and seals very tight. The lock works well too.
Nope. Wanted to like it, but this one isn't good.
I am updating my review of this box and dropping two more stars. After only 5 months of ownership the passenger side latch doesn't work and I cannot open it from that side. I see that another reviewer is having that same issue with their driver side. This is unacceptable from a brand like Yakima where this is pretty much their specialty. Thank goodness for REI and their return policy, because Yakima still hasn't answered my customer service request which was 3 weeks ago. I did receive an email saying it could take up to a 1-2 months for a response. Yeah... this is my last Yakima.
Almost Great, but not... quite... there...
This is my first rooftop carrier, so I'm not sure how this compares to other units. I do like that it can be accessed on both sides. I also like that it's a matte, textured type of plastic and not that shiny, glossy plastic you often see. I also really like the way Yakima designed the rack clamps on this. It went onto the Prinsu Rack on my FJ Cruiser as easy as can be. I just took this carrier on a 2 week trip through Socal, Arizona and Colorado. I was in snow, sand, sun, etc. My one beef with it is that when it's full (or even when it's not full and it's just cold/wet outside) it's kind of hard to close, because there are no handles to grab onto the outside. The lock will not release the key until you shut the lid hard enough that three, internal latches along the perimeter engage, which in turn raises the handle to the locked position. This is supposed to help confirm that you shut the lid fully and that it is locked, so you don't walk away with the box accidentally unlocked. It's also supposed to help you keep track of the keys, so you don't lock the keys inside the unit. On paper, this is great, but out in the wild, it has mixed results. You have to really slam the lid down with a good amount of force to engage the lock and raise the handle, and when it's super cold and wet outside, this is really, really, really hard to do because there's no place to actually grab onto the lid to push it down. Even with the grippy, textured plastic, it's still slippery and there are no real handles to hold onto. You either have to hold onto the thin lip with your fingers or try and get above the whole unit and push it down firmly from the top. If you're putting this on an SUV and the lid is always open, it's kind of hard to get high enough above it to push the lid down. I'm not sure if this is a common problem with all of these units, because I don't really see handles on any of them, so maybe I'm just not using this correctly. But it proved too difficult for my wife to close in frigid Colorado weather, and it was pretty challenging for me. At first I thought we might just have it overfilled, so we reduced the amount of stuff we put in it, but it still proved really difficult. Anyway, it's a decent rooftop box, and it would be an EXCELLENT rooftop box if it just had some rope handles or something to help facilitate slamming the lid shut to engage the lock/handle. I'm considering just drilling some holes and adding them myself. Or maybe I'll return it and consider a more premium model. I dunno, still trying to decide here.
Pleasantly Suprised
Bought this during the anniversary sale and have used it on a camping trip recently with no troubles. In the box, I was able to store a canopy, multiple chairs, 2x small tables, large table for cooking etc, 5 gallon propane tank, north face wawona 6, sleeping pads, sleeping bags, and some other things. I was a bit skeptical reading the reviews about it popping open on the freeway but it feels secure and I make sure to double check the locking mechanism. The box also opens on both sides but I can only utilize one side due to an awning that’s mounted. The key cannot be removed when it’s unlocked, but honestly, I actually prefer it that way. Highly recommend.
One side will not open
Bought this in April and only used 2x. On the 2nd use the driver side lock no longer opened. The style, capacity and ease of set up are great but you are also paying for the functionality of dual side openings therefore returning the box
Perfect on a CX-5
Have had this roof box for 3+ years, 0 problems with it thus far and has been a great asset for our big camping trips with 2 adults and a dog. Have had it on a Mazda CX-5, it fits perfectly. Also fits skis for ski trips. We also regularly take it off and on, pretty simple process to attach it to our cross bars. Would recommend!
Flew open on freeway - lost gear! $$$
After having REI assist me 3x to get the box moved forward so the back of it wouldnt rub on my hatchback light, i have up and let it rub as it kept shifting backwards. I ook this box on the freeway headed North, some gracious human flashed their brights to notify me that my box was open. I had locked the box with the handle in the up position. About an hour later it was open. I don't understand how this is supposed to have "the superior locking mechanism, when all appeared well and it still flew open. I borrowed a friend's Thule, that didn't happen! In fact, the wonderful REI staff helped me pick out this box need on their recommendation. So, i don't know if this is a fluke- but I'm very disappointed and now feel like i need to always throw some tie downs over it because it cannot be trusted.
SkyBox NX blew open on the highway
My brand new Yakima SkyBox NX cargo box blew open on the Interstate. In my rear-view mirror, I saw 5 items tumble to the pavement. The box was locked and the key removed. I have now read of others with the same problem. I no longer trust Yakima and await their response.
Great space, budget feel
It was okay for the price point. Good mid level box with the low profile clamp system I wanted. Almost flush! It has a lot of space throughout but it still wasn't enough for me. I upgraded to the cbx 18 model. One issue I did have was the driver side of the box couldn't be opened. I noticed this when I was returning /exchanging for bigger box. REI mentioned it was probably a manufacture defect. I had never used driver side prior to noticing. The latch has a key that locks until you close the box. Works great and feel comfortable knowing its truly closed and avoids accidently driving off with an open box. The clamp tie down system is amazing and fit my factory bars with no problem. It is a bit tall and didn't fit my garage on my rav4 which was my initial motive with going small 16 size. Since I still couldn't fit into my garage with out removing it either way, I opted for 18
Lasted 1 light use, broke on 2nd light use
I got 1 good use out of this product the first year I owned it. The 2nd time I used it approximately 1 year after purchasing, the drivers side latch mechanism failed. It will unlock and can move, but will not disengage the latches to open it. I think the latch design is flawed and the other side is likely to fail too, rendering the whole box completely useless. Keep in mind both light uses were for family beach trips. I only stored beach chairs and a few kids toys up there. I do not think this product will stand up to what it should be designed for. I researched this product extensively before purchasing and chalked up the 1 star reviews to user error, but this one just isn't built to last. Since I am 1 month past the REI return period, I believe I now have to go through Yakima.
