Great product
Exactly what you'd expect, for me this is sorta big and it's the smallest product offered. If you usually only do 1,2,3/4 night trips then this should be fine depending on how you pack. Out of the box it really isn't hard at all to open or close just push on the little plastic part that sticks out when opening you'll see.
A baby bear vault - hooray!
OMG, a bear vault for shorter trips. I have a love hate relationship with my regular size bear vault. I need to take it with me on trips but on the usual 1-2 day trips I do it is bulky and overkill. I hate the weight and bulk and can never find a way to get it in my pack comfortably. Now there is a baby version that is perfect for trip of only a couple days and without the bulk. It fits better in my pack and has the same quality as its larger versions. I love it for that. That said it is still bulky and heavy but that is necessary to make it bear proof so I get that. This is a definite win for the gear I use.
Bearly Sprinting!
I found this to be a great bear storage solution for my 1-2 night backpacking trips. Once you get the hang of it, its easy to open. You do have to be aware of the bulk of your bear storage items though. For example, if you cook in a large pot, there might not be enough room in the canister for the pot, food, and toiletries. If you only use your pot to boil water, then you should be able to squeeze in more than a few days of food in it. I did find I had to use a smaller spoon instead of those long ones backpackers tend to preferer for dehydrated meals. Some of the parks I backpack in require bear canisters and this is the least bulky of the canister options.
Seal broke and couldn’t access food
The seal broke to the bear canister on my first backpacking trip. I wasn’t able to access my food and had to eat the scarps from a friend. We tried everything to break the seal. The only way I could open it was with a hydraulic press.
Holds way more than 2 days worth of food!
I Chose this over the Bare Boxer because it has slightly more volume and doesn't necessarily require a tool to open. I am not sure what everyone else is eating out there but I can easily fit 3 days of food in this and 4 if I'm efficient. I carry Packit Gourmet food almost exclusively, and the meal pouches are about half the size of other freeze dried meals (single serving). 5 of these (3 breakfast and 2 dinners) fit perfectly with plenty of room for snacks, coffee packets, and noncook lunch items. BTW, your 1st dinner doesn't need to go inside so that's a 4 day trip without any problems! It is a serious pain to open (that's the point) at room temp so figure it to be harder in the cold. Use the credit card method to open (Youtube) and you will be fine. Relatively light and takes up very little space in my Crown 3 pack. Depending on how you pack your gear the smaller shape doesn't sit well externally on a pack. Overall, happy to not have to search for the right tree to hang my food bag anymore!
Solid option (but not everywhere)
We used this as our secondary food storage container on a trip out West where there are no bears but there are aggressive small critters and crows. I used a credit card to help with sliding the tabs over each other and this worked well. I like the shape of this container for packing food and it also nestles in pack fairly well. This container is not approved in certain areas as the bears have figured out how to open it. We used a Bear Keg as our primary canister and it is universally approved, but also large and heavy.
Works Great
Does the job! I was hesitant due to the weight. I have used this several 2 and 3 night trips on the AT. It has plenty of space and I love not having to bear hang. I have to say, I am more than pleased and I would rate this good for up to 3 or 4 days of food. I cold soak and pack my own meals. I could see it getting tight if you are doing all prepacked meals due to package size.
A small vault at last!
Perfect for 1 person on a shorter trip. As a solo backpacker, there's enough to be worried about. This has brought me peace of mind about my food and my safety.
no bears yet, just deer
i love this thing. fits easily into my pack, and can fit electrolytes, snacks, collapsible mug, matches and fuel, and 6-8 freeze dried meals. even witnessed an inquisitive deer who accidentally rolled it down a rocky hill and not a scratch or crack on it!
Small, sturdy, and easy to pack.
I like this smaller size. I make my own cold-soak meals. And I can easily get 3+ days of food in this and still have room for scented things like toothpaste. The smaller size easily fits in my pack. The only real down-side is the weight. But with many areas I hike in requiring a bear canister this was the best option.
