okay but not sure I’ll keep it

Overall I like this hat. It’s hard to find functional (ie, not just for fashion) sun hats made out of natural materials, so a plus for the cotton. I also love the side snaps. I find that if I’m walking near a loud creek or something similar, having a brim over my ears reflects the sound back down, which I don’t like, so it's nice to have the option to have the ears uncovered. And the fit is super comfy once I got the right size. I normally wear a M in women's hats (my head measures about 22.75 in) and I could barely get the M on, while the L fits perfectly. I really don’t think it would fit someone with a 23.5 in head (the upper limit listed for the L), so if you’re in between sizes, definitely go up. The not so good: the brim has a mind of its own and is sort of wavy and uneven. The hat was packaged well so it wasn’t a shipping issue, more just the way it’s constructed. Also, the front and back of the brim are 3 inches wide (as listed in the description), but the sides are only 2.5 inches wide. Based on my experience with other hats, that extra half inch can really made a difference in sun protection, and I'm disappointed that REI doesn't have more detailed measurement info. Finally, the removable chin strap is just tied onto a couple of loops with overhand knots, which is annoying and cheap. It’s a pain to take it on and off, and the knots create a bulky spot on each side of the hat that stick out and are very obvious when the sides of the brim are snapped up.

Cattywampus hat

Very low quality product. The top of the hat isn't a proper triangle; one of the lateral sides is longer than the other, so it's never straight. To make it worse, the brim isn't attached correctly, so the front and back and snaps on the brim don't align (at all) with the front and back and snaps on the crown. And it shrinks. Don't get this hat. (Would attach pix but it's not giving me the option.)

I like it way more than I thought I would

I actually really like this hat. Typically I am a baseball hat type of person, but with the sun always beating down my ears I wanted another option. I have never worn a hat like this before, so I gave it a shot. Full disclosure, I have a pretty big head and this thing actually fits. Its comfortable, flexible and sits nicely on my head. The mesh helps with overheating and the interior band is soft and comfortable. Now, would I wear this out if I wanted to be "fashionable", no, probably not. But for hiking or being in the sun this is a great option.

Downgraded quality & lack of quality control

My partner has one of these purchased in 2020 or 2021. It has grommets for the chin strap & metal snaps for the rim. This one has plastic snaps & the chin strap is simply knotted onto a loop on either side. This particular hat is also sewn crooked, so when I snapped up the sides the hat sat at temple to shoulder rather than at nose to spine. Definitely returning.

Quality going Downhill

Very sad. REI used to be a brand you could rely on for quality products. This hat is a perfect example of the degrading of the REI brand. I have several of these snap=brim hats from years past. When I saw them on sale I purchased another one. Immediately I noticed the difference. This one is MUCH more flimsy than the previous versions. I weighed them to be sure. The 2 and 3 year old versions weighed in at 5.4 ounces. This current one weighed just 4.2. 20% lighter material!!! It seems REI products are no longer worth the price you pay. I can get a similar flimsy hat from a dozen Chinese vendors on Amazon for much cheaper. I wanted an REI hat for the supposed quality. It's no longer there. The best thing about the hat is that I can return it easily. What a shame.

Great hat, securely holds my sunglasses too!

I loved the versatility and fit of this hat. The brim is malleable and easy to shape. It’s nice to have a bit of a brim but nothing too crazy. Ventilation is great. I even managed to easily use the side vents to securely hold my sunglasses when they’re not on my face - a feature I’ve become very accustomed to with my other hiking hats. This is a winner all around.

Great Hat

The hat fit well and true to size. It really did a great job wicking away sweat and keeping my head cool alongside protecting me from the sun. Great purchase! Really appreciate that the chin strap are removable also. I keep it in the hidden pocket in the top of the hat.

Nice and cool hat

Great hat, worked very well to keep me cool and out of the sun. Wore it to climb Mt St Helens, and kept my bald head burn free and cool. Fit me great, I forgot I had it on.

Great hat.

Great hat, but the brim could be wider. The only reason I gave this hat three stars is for the brim not being wide enough.

Versatile hat for travel- got wet but no shrinkage

Nice travel hat, smaller brim is nice. I like the ability to snap the sides up. Wish it were waxed cotton- it got drenched in Ireland a couple of times, but DID NOT SHRINK! Would have like better color choices like navy.
