Easy to use and fun throwback!

My boyfriend and I purchased these prior to a rural weekend camping trip where we knew we would have no service. They are not only easy to use, but also fun! I’m only 21 now, but I haven’t played with a walkie talkie since I was little running through my neighborhood and this is such a fun throwback. I still have plenty to understand with the settings but the manual is quite comprehensive. Definitely be mindful of the distance ratings—we haven’t gotten to test these in far mileage zones yet but did use them to communicate between vehicles on a foggy night. I would estimate it was closer to 2 miles in that instance before the other device no longer came through clearly!

Very disappointed in my purchase

Purchased for a trip with 2 groups to stay in contact. We were never more than 5 miles apart. 3rd day into the trip and radios have only worked within 1 mile range. Taking them back when we return.

Great little ski radios.

I got these predominantly for skiing and they have worked great so far. I have used them down to about 2F and they worked really well. I have communicated up to 3 miles away in wooded mountains to coordinate with friends, they've done a good job so far! For skiing you normally aren't too far away from whoever it is that you're communicating with, so 3 miles is my personal record. I've used them for the last 6 ski outings and the battery still shows full. Pros: Small Rechargeable Lithium battery is great in the cold Weather resistant Cons: None yet

A climbers review

You're interested because you want sturdy radios without heaps of tech and the choices are slim. I took these up Utah's 22 pitch sport climb and these were powered on for 15 hours so read and heed. These things were easy to set up, clear to hear. The screen lights up when in use for a few seconds but you really don't need the screen unless you're changing a setting. I tried the hands free "VOX" just testing around the house and couldn't get consistent success. Turn it off and save battery. Hanging on my harness loop, I would point it toward my face and my partner could hear me maybe 90% of the time, which is good enough for me. There was minimal wind, more wind might not make that possible. Fiddling with that little carabiner to hold to your face would be a bit unnerving if you're on a hanging belay. These are quite small and light (in a good way) but I don't know where else I'd keep it while climbing. My gripes are: the screens will get scratched up when you sit on a rock or from swinging along your gear, and most importantly there's only a small loop for the dinky lanyard/ carabiner which is ridiculous considering they are marketing this as rugged and for extreme weather. Just give me a bigger hole so I can put cord through it.

Neighborhood range as advertised

So far so good! We got these to go camping but the kids wanted to use them around the neighborhood first. The advertised range for a neighborhood is up to one mile and it seems be to just that! We'll post an updated review once we're out in the woods, but I would expect it to perform well.

Lightweight but poorly designed

They are very lightweight, which is nice. But the design is bad. The power button it directly on the front of the device, so it easily turns on or off when you don't want it to. The menu system is complicated and there are too few buttons to effectively navigate it.

Great in the backcountry

These have been great radios for backcountry skiing. The battery lasts for multiple days and they are small and compact. I hook it to the shoulder strap of my pack and have seen no issues with the water proofing, I would highly recommend these as a high performance frs radio at a solid price point.

Think twice about your purchase

Good product, but the company does not support their products, Their clients or nature itself. It saddens me to think that the ability of these radios to reach Miles at times went out in the wilderness will not be able to be used because of the decisions of REI to support an administration’s choice to cease protect protecting and actively exploit federally protected lands.

Good for family skiing

Works great for communication while skiing. Holds charge nicely and easy to use. I upgraded from budget midlands which were terrible…wish I had gotten these sooner!
