Quality decreasing
This is my third pair throughout the years because I originally loved them. They have continued to make them cheaper and cheaper. I bought my third pair and they lasted only 2 months before the zippers broke and mesh started to tear. I might try sending them off to get them repaired. Patagonia please get it together!
Patagonia took a great short and made it good
I loved the original version of these shorts. They're great for hiking, swimming, lounging, pretty much everything. I ordered several more pairs even though Patagonia made changes. In my opinion, the changes made the shorts worse, not better. They changed the back pocket to a button instead of a zipper. So now it's not as secure and harder to open and close. The front pocket zippers have a tendency to catch the fabric hiding the zippers, I never had that problem before. Overall, I still love these shorts, but unfortunately they were even better before.
Better Hiking/Worse Running Than 9 Trails
So Patagonia killed the much loved Nine Trails running shorts and replaced them with these shorts which are clearly designed to be more multi use. Runners are going to hate the change. They’re slightly baggier and with the pockets following the seams instead of tapered across the thigh, you’re going to get bounce in these. That being said, I’m guessing they made the change because hikers ended up liking these more than runners and they have more pure running options. For hikers they have the same light weight, durability, and odor resistance. The pocket change utilizes space better too. It’s the same basic design as the Nine Trails just slightly baggier. Watch out for the sizing though if you want a Nine Trails replacement. Whereas the Nine Trails were sized like running shorts (i.e. they ran small), these are true to size. If you were on the edge of a size before, you might want to get a smaller size with the Multi Trail.
Trying the long shorts and loving it
I decided to try these out because I loved the Women's version of the Multi Trail shorts, but still felt the crotch start to bunch up and chafe during the really long runs with all the sweat. Decided to follow Courtney Dauwalter's style and go long. The major benefit these shorts have is the long liner on the inside which stays close to the skin to prevent chaffing, bunching and even creates space for everything to breathe. I now have two pairs which I find myself wearing more than the Women's version now. The only thing I wish was different is the seams of the liner, one traveling up both cheeks. The waist band could be a little wider too, but I am not mad at it.
Maximum comfort Patagonia shorts
These perfectly fitted shorts are light and super comfortable. The fit feels like they’re not even there. I love the 3 large zippered pockets that hold my wallet, phone, and keys - comfortable even during a workout at the gym. It’s my second pair of Patagonia shorts from REI, I’ll certainly buy more!
Terrible Quality - Utter Junk
2 of the 5 pair I bought are defective. In this picture you can see that, for this pair, 1 end of the drawstring is far longer than the other. These drawstrings are fixed in the back and CANNOT be adjusted - so I'm stuck with these as-is and have to tie the drawstring with a couple inches of slack. What happened to Patagonia? They still charge top dollar but, at least in this case, they don't deliver quality.

I was looking for the 7 inch Strider Pro shorts for long distance hiking, but those were out of stock, so I took a chance on these. They turned out to be much better than I expected. The boxer liner is great against chafing and the zippered pockets actually fit my phone. And the phone bounces around less than I thought it would. The material feels lighter and seems to dry faster than my old Strider Pro shorts. I like that there's no zippered pocket in the back to chafe against a backpack. The only annoyance is that the length, while (apparently) stylish, is a bit too long. They bind some when making uphill big steps on rocks.
Falls Short of Nine Trails
I purchased these a few months ago when my local REI was out of stock of the Nine Trails shorts in my size. These seem very similar (3 pockets, lined, drawstring, similar length, etc.) but I have found them to be far worse than my Nine Trails shorts. First off, they run large. I usually wear an XL in the Nine Trails. I picked up the XL in these assuming it would be the same fit. I was very wrong. I have to cinch the drawstring as tight as possible to keep them from falling off. I also have to hike them way up to get the crotch to fit snugly to prevent chaffing. The material is way lighter, but I find this to lead to contouring of a lot of various body parts I don’t necessarily want contoured. The light material also feels incredibly delicate. I haven’t really put them through the ringer to know, but one cat claw pulled a massive snag in them. I’d wager sitting on a log or brushing against a bush would wreck these. Ultimately, at a more expensive price, these shorts seem like a far worse option.
Not None Trails Replacement Worthy
I don't even know how many pairs of nine trails shorts I own, but I've bought them for as long as I've known they existed and it's at least a dozen. This is one of those things where I thought I'd found the perfect shorts and I never had to think about shorts again, and I could use my brain for something more useful. Turns out Patagonia had something else in mind. Some of the changes I don't mind. They are slightly baggier and the material is lighter and smoother, that's so far that's fine. I doubt that they'll hold up well, but it's too early to tell. What bothers me are the genuinely stupid decisions made by Patagonia. First, the decision to use a button snap on the back pocket instead of a zipper makes me crazy. I guess it's easier if you're planning to use a choice for walking around and you have a wallet in there, but most of us are running have more uses for pockets that seal and less for pockets the things can bounce out of. Not a deal killer, but annoying. The thing I truly can't understand, is it they added baffles to the pockets, so literally anytime you zipper unzip the pocket while running or walking, you snag the zipper and have to spend time trying to fix it. This happens more often than it doesn't, it is incredibly frustrating. There's no way this was tested in the field for runners. It's incomprehensible it's something so obvious would have been missed by professional testers. Either that, or they just decided that the appearance value is more important than the functionality, which is not why we pay $80 for freaking shorts. Anyway, I gave this two stars instead of one because I haven't found another pair of shorts that I like better. I haven't looked that hard, and I guess I keep hoping Patagonia will bring back better running shorts.
I tried all the men's shorts REI had - these won
I live in Alaska, and don't get to go shopping at REI much unless I am travelling. I did a major "shorts sesh" where I grabbed over a dozen different pairs of highly similar shorts, and tried them out to see which was the best. Patagonia, Vuori, Janji, REI brand... you get the idea. Anyhow, the Patagonia Men's Multi Trails Shorts emerged victorious from this majorly ambitious contest, getting the gold medal in comfort, function, and versatility. They may not look wildly exciting in the photos here, but you will be wildly excited by how useful they are. I used to not be a "liner guy" - but the liners of these are so comfortable, I actually prefer them to my usual boxers. It also helps to have 1 item to deal with during travel, rather than 2. I've rocked these in the desert, on the trails in the summer, on a bike, and for nordic walking / elghufs. If these things can handle elghufs, they can handle you! Get them... without any further hesitation! The price may seem high, but Patagonia repairs their gear ad infinitum, which is a major part of the value proposition.
