A Very Impressive Item to Have in Your Backpack

My wife and I use a Big Agnes C-Bar 3 with a footprint and a fly, but we can put this over the front fourth of our setup to create a big covered front porch and/or create a side porch. We can then cook in the rain, get up during the night as needed and not have to be standing in the rain, and have extra covered space for running a clothing line under this without concern for the items getting wet. And, when we need to set up our tent while it is raining, we put this up first and that really helps. Given how light this is and how it reduces in size to something very small, it is exceptionally handy. The material is waterproof and durable. The loops are strong and well-positioned. One evening, we took our two ponchos, which have grommets, and easily hooked them to this tarp to make an enclosed area in which we could take a shower. It was easy to angle this tarp to shed water away from the tent to reduce backsplash. We had this for seven very wet days on the Georgia section of the AT, and I would never go on the AT again without this.

Weak, rips easy

I put it up & started a camp chore. Turned around and the tarp was laying on my hammock. The fabric ripped mid panel. I was concerned about the light weight of the fabric and added short loops of bungee cord to provide some give . Ripped anyway. I can only guess that there was a flaw in the fabric. Unfortunately, REI only stands behind products purchased by co-op members - this was a gift from a non-member. Took it in to a store, was informed that there is nothing REI can do about their product failing if not purchased by a member. Not sure how that makes sense. Won’t be replacing it with a product from REI.

So far so good. Versatile and light.

It comes with guylines and stakes, complete with tensioning system. Honestly, there are more lines than you’d usually need. There are tie-points everywhere, including on both sides of the tarp, which makes it a versatile ultralight shelter. The fabric does feel delicate, like most ultralight fabric, but it holds up well under tension. We’ve set it up using only guy lines and a single line through tie points under the center, as a hammock shelter.

Only one evening but very happy so far.

As the one other reviewer said light and thin slightly worrying I’ll see how well it holds up in the CO mountains it will get a lot of use this summer. I also bought the REI poles which made setup pretty easy and I have a lot of options. Very happy to add this to my gear and caught it on sale so win win.

Takes a pounding

Great lightweight tarp. Tie loops solid and sewing crisp and neat. Kept me dry for 3 days worth of steady, heavy, pounding rainstorms.
