Great Cargo Bike - Never Drive Again
This bike really is phenomenal but I do have some complaints- it’s a solid bike with all the right features to make you never want to drive your car again but at this price point Tern really should include some better bells and whistles. The chain guard broke on this bike in the first month of riding, the kickstand provided is kind of a joke for a cargo bike of this size and price point. The handlebars, grip, seat and pedals are all passable but feel cheap for a bike in the 3k+ price point. Tern makes some great accessories for this bike like the glove box , kickstand duo and front rack but none of them are cheap so add another 300-500 bucks to get this bike kitted out, and if you run ortleib panniers on this bike you will need special spacers/clips as the rear rack tubes are HUGE. The Bosch motor is nice and zippy but the battery range on turbo is not great… the charger is small enough that I can throw it in my bag and charge at work but this definitely wouldn’t make a round trip 20+mile on turbo mode without a charge. I get about 15 miles on turbo max with gear on the bike. As far as the class three rating goes you aren’t likely to get this bike up to and stay at 28mph for very long if at all without putting out some of your own serious man power even on turbo. It is geared appropriately and quite fast to accelerate and it is nice to get some assist past 20mph compared to a class 1 ebike but with cargo on a flat I top out at around 22-24mph unless I want to get real sweaty. My only other gripe with this bike is the max rated weight capacity - 330lbs. The bike itself is over 50 lbs and if you are a heavy rider like me it basically means if you are moving any cargo you are operating it past its max “approved” capacity. So far I haven’t had any issues and it feels built like a tank but the assurance of a higher weight capacity would go a long way when I’m booking it downhill with cars.
Perfect kid hauler
I bought this to bring my 4 year old around town, and it has surpassed my expectations! At ~50lbs, it’s not going to compete with a carbon frame road bike, but it is one of the lightest electric cargo bikes on the market. I have to store the bike in the basement, which has an awkward set of stairs, and the bike makes it worth the effort of lugging it up each time. The Bosch motor works like a dream, and the battery range is great for several trips. (I find myself charging weekly so far.) And maybe more importantly, the Bosch battery is UL Certified. There are a couple of trade offs: the Shimano components aren’t top of the line, so shifting isn’t as buttery smooth as a full Ultegra drivetrain, but it works well enough; the ground clearance is pretty low due to the 20” wheels, which isn’t a problem until I forget about that going down a big step or curb. But overall, I couldn’t be happier with this bike.
Perfect for what it is
The Tern Quick Haul P9 is an amazing value, especially now that Tern dropped the prices (I paid $3300 when I bought mine in 2023, d'oh). I have had mine for about five months, and already approaching 1,000 miles on the odometer. I swapped out contact points-pedals, handlebars, saddle-but other than that the bike comes ready to go with lights, fenders, and good tires. I am about 6'6" and my wife is 5'4". We have no problem sharing the bike and quickly adjusting the stem and seatpost when swapping riders is not an issue. Definitely needs to be charged frequently if riding on Turbo--expect 15-20 miles depending on load and terrain. Another good feature is that the bike is similar enough in wheelbase to other bikes and fits on a standard hitch rack for easy transportation by car if needed. Basically, I think this is the perfect entry level car replacing cargo e-bike. I dream of a brighter future with less cars and more people using bikes like this to get around in cities.
Not for me
The mid size sedan of utility e-bikes. In the end I ended up returning because the bike was too long. If you have to take it up or down stairs, and don’t have stretch Armstrong arms to pick up from the back rack and hold the handle bars straight at the same time - don’t bother. The edge of the stair will make contact directly with the mid drive Bosch motor. I also dropped a chain (mechanical fit fix), but it did require 30+ minutes on the edge of the road to remount. Seems perfect as a kid hauler, but too much bike otherwise.
