90 mm travel spec is a lie. Otherwise spectacular.
I am reviewing the Cane Creek Thudbuster LT seatpost, where the L in LT means long, and the T means travel. I bought this product a while ago from REI. Very happy with it on my 29er hardtail used for MTB advanced trail riding. Swapped in x-soft elastomer to tune it for myself. But I'm mostly writing this to clarify a very misleading spec shown here and everywhere for this product ... It does not have 90mm of travel. Not even close. Of course. If you completely remove the elastomer (as I did during the procedure to swap from the Medium, which comes standard with the seatpost, to the X-soft, which I bought soon afterwards), so there is nothing in there but air, THEN and only then, will you get a full 90mm of travel. But of course the post cannot operate with no elastomer in there at all. So the 90mm spec is ridiculous, wrong, and misleading. I'll guess I get about 25-30mm max, with my X-soft elastomer. And that is just great. I don't think I'd want any more - would use a full suspension bike at that point. Probably had about 10-15mm of travel with the Medium elastomer (3/5). I'll add that after using it for a while, I think an elastomer is better than springs would be. Sure the elastomer is less efficient, dissipating energy, but it is not much, and I think a spring would bob too much. As it is, with the geometry design, this thing is just perfect for what I need.
Saves your bum from bumps at Ebike Speeds
I recently got into Ebiking and learned quickly that at 20+mph the force of bumps is severely amplified. I got recommended this seat post by another cyclist. Yes! This job does a great job of spreading the forces over time and distance and that really helps with the pain that starts to accumulate especially on longer rides. I can now do 40 miles without agonizing pain when hitting a bump. One thing to note that the body takes up a substantial amount of length on the seat post and this may not work if you need to lower the seat height. I got lucky with my height and bike geometry. Something to be mindful about. If you have an ebike that goes really fast and you are on the street, I would definitely recommend getting some form of suspension seatpost. This has dramatically increased the enjoyment of riding.
So much less cost that buying a Susman or a dual Susman bike. It actually does what it claims.
